most obsolete PC out there
Since old PC's seem to be the topic lately whats the most obsolete piece of PC equipment you still have that operates, No XT or AT pcs either Im talking useless. I'll start with a timex sinclair, a Apple newton (20 years and still doesn't recognize my handwriting. and to top the list a 3Com Audrey, a piece of tech so bad it never did work right, 3Com refunded my purchase and didn't want to pay to have it shipped back!!!

5.25" floppy drive (its' actually on a computer I gave to my mother-in-law but it does still work)
Well, I don't, personally, own this one.. but I have access to it at work (and we have to use occasionally):
An Intel MDS 235. It has 8 1/2" floppies. it's predecessor, the MDS 800, was what Gary Kildall made CP/M upon. |
I have an old PC jr. It uses cartridges and 5.25" floppies.
the computer that runs the CNC lathe here at school reads off cassetes and has a Z80 processor. Amazingly old, impossible to work with.
<b> Amazingly old, impossible to work with.</b> Sounds like myself.
If PC means personal computer in a general sense, I could show you my Commodore 64 with 1541 disk drive that I have out in the garage.
at my last job we had an old z80 my boss said was older than me and as far as i know they are still using it
hmmph... i dont' think there is something as a useless PC out there.... if it works and does what it is supposed to do it's good. Even a P4 that's running WinME can be a piece of turd.
and to that person that talked about a Timex Sinclair? I have a friend that has a frankenstien of a Timex running a BBS with several HD's hanging off of it.... |
my Mac Plus =)

I have 2 very old personal computers that still work; they're both Atari's (Yes, THAT Atari!) One is an 800XL; the oher is a 1200XL. The odd thing about the 1200XL is that Atari claims that there were never any 1200XL production units, only prototypes.
They both function well; since they don't have hard drives, there are two options for "saving the BASIC programs you might write" (Oh, yeah, THAT'S gonna happen!) First is the "Modern" method- a 5-1/4" floppy drive (single density only); the second is a cassette drive that records the program to an audio cassette (talk about a slow loader!); I also have a functioning thermal printer, a 2600 baud phone-cradle modem, a strip-chart printer and about a billion program cartridges. It's a real museum piece, but I love it. |
I've got the Atari 800/1200/ST machines too. Same with the 2600 and carts. Ah, the old days... :)
all the computer components i have sitting in boxes would be enough to create some super mega computer mutant!
hmm.. i have a commodore64. i can still play pacman on it!
I have a C-64 and a Tandy 1000, I also have an Epson 100(8088 CPU) Those are the oldest I have working. I have some older stuff but it is mostly just parts laying around.
my grandma gave me her commodore 128, and now she's gonna give me her 6 year old compaq with 16 megs of ram. whoopee!
Other than the fact that it's still useful, my abacus is the most "obsolete."
My nintendo still works. It has a nice 8 bit cpu. Its not exactly a pc, but with the Tikki OS i could make it into one.
Actually, I think its Contikki OS.
no one has mentioned The great line of texas instuments I own a TI99/4a 8 glorious colors TV display or 8 inch monitor could buy the expantion box that had a 5 1/2 floppie drive also a cradle modem was avalible. main storage was cartrage but you ccoul dalso use floppie or a cassett recorder
not only do i have the PC i also have the original box with all of the documentiaion |
I have a 8088 and a Comedre 64 that both still work - and I actually use them from time to time to boot.
A bit off topic, I know.. but I just had to say it:
I have a copy of windows 1.0. Disks and docs. People have been telling me to donate it to the Smithsonian. |
Best I've got is a BBC - Got it fixed up recently as we found a load of old games that we wanted to play again. The joys of the 5 1/4"!

Or call up the tech museum in San Jose, if they don't already have a copy I know they would be interested. |
Anybody Remember the commodore Vic 20 cartrage and cassette drive still work pulled out to show my kids. They laughed
remember the Vic20? Hell I still have one, including the cassette drive. That was a great machine in its day. Also have a Kaypro 2 portable (back then portable meant anything under 50 pounds), and even a working Altair 8800 that my dad bought new. He bought it pre-assembled (it was like $100 more for that option) so that may have something to do with the fact that it does still function.
I have an old Apple //c that still works, though the monitor is twitchy and has MAJOR screen burn. (Ooooh...green screen...cool!) Can't find any disks for it, so I think when they degrade, that will be it!
My PowerMac SawTooth 500Mhz G4
lol@charliex
i've got an old original mac my doctor gave me a few years ago for hacking his office computer (without messing anything up)... it needs a boot disk to run the OS, and with another disk, i can play *drumroll* b&w hockey!!!! :D I've also got an old tandy from the mid-80's stuffed in a closet somewhere. haha that thing was great, i used to play think quick and type shit on wordperfect... I nearly shat myself when my dad bought the family a p90 for christmas in '91... my mom is begging me to throw that thing away now :) |
I also have a working Com 64, 1541 aftermarket drive and 300 baud modem. I threw away the Okimate 10 printer, though.
I have the old Nintendo because I love that SNK Baseball Stars game so much! |
I put some of my secure DOC's on a 5.25" floppy. How many of you can read those discs...
At work, the main DNS server is an ancient IBM 386 desktop running some form of UNIX. Now, the backup servers are modern machines, but there seems to be a kind of superstition about the primary - every time it's been taken down to go offline permanently, the backup DNS servers have all failed. We put the 386 back online and everything smoothes out.
I have and still use a Tandy color Computer. I use it for a spread sheet on one specific out-of-date program. So far its the most reliable thing in my office !!!
I know this does not fit this thread at all, but this just came to mind
http://www.torlian.net/pics/TFP/eniac.jpg and my oldest system here is a PIII 650; it is slow compared to my other three systems |

I think my ti-83 does....... |
Err.. I think it might be my CoCo 1, the big silver one.
6MHz laptop, monochrome, recently upgraded from Win 0.9beta to 3.11
I win |
I've got an Apple ][+
Originally released in 1979, I bought it in 1983 when they announced the IIe. I have the original box, anti-static bag, foam packing and recepts, too, I think. I had it in my office last summer playing games...the coworkers were quite amused :) |
Tandy TRS-80. Ah yeah...those were the days.
we've got a reel-to-reel computer downstairs in the basement. I think the 1" tape it uses holds about 20 megs... It's a remnant from an old company called Elexsi my dad used to work at. Not sure of the model number or company that made it--might be Elexsi...
