Windows XP SP3 - Selective no audio problems

Hello all,

I haven't posted much on this forum though I have read a lot and there seems to be a lot of knowledgeable people here so I am hoping I get some great fast and hopefully easy to understand answers .

I have a older computer [specs at the end] running windows xp pro SP3. It has the realtek AC97 sound device. The only things that have changed in the last two weeks are the following:

Linksys wireless adapter installed [before problem]
MagicJack phone adapter installed [after problem]

both softwares are fine.

Inbetween there somewhere I ran microsoft update and switched up to SP3 [I hadn't run update in about a year [yes i am lazy]] and also downloaded 28 other updates that installed but i can't recall if this problem happened before or after this.

Now two weeks ago for no apparent reason I started having audio issues. Sound section says I have no audio device installed, however sound still worked on everything. System sounds, webpage sounds, and stuff like winamp etc. However occasionally the web page streaming videos would stop making sound if i restarted the browser. If this occured I could reboot and once again I would have browser movie streaming sound until i had to restart it.

Also during this time the shutdown/start-up sounds still worked and the sounds made when a error message comes up.

I mention these because now in the last 3 days no web browser [tried firefox, internet explorer, and even opera] will play sound for any videos regardless of format. The computer error messages make no sound, and the shut-down start-up messages make no sound. However I can still watch movies and listen to music offline using winamp, vlc player, etc.

I have no idea exactly what happened and I am not terribly savvy in solving this issue. Someone on another forum told me how to get my system info so I will post that, and the sound information if you need more info from the system info I can post that too. Any suggestions would be extremely appreciated keeping in mind step by step instructions for complicated tasks would be most helpful.

Thanks in advance and now the info including some conflicts in case that matters:

Alright so someone tell me what I am doing wrong. I have been on here about 3 months now and have made a few posts. Most get ignored, or not replied to. I know there are a lot of users on here. Thirty people read this thread, and no one offered any help at all? Luckily I figured out the problem due to some assistance from another forum and some digging, but seriously no one here could offer any assistance? Shrug.

Unfortunately, We don't have answers to every question. I've been here for 7 years and I still don't get replied to.

I'm not sure how MagicJack works, but is it possible that it mutes all other sounds so you don't have computer sounds playing while talking on the phone? I know for sure that I just ran across an option like that a few days ago. Is it possible that it mutes things and forgets to un-mute them when it's finished?

Another thing is Realtek AC97 sucks. When I was using XP my sound would go out for a few minutes and then it'd play all the sound that happened all at once.

Try uninstalling the ac97 device and re-downloading the drivers off their website.

also, it's silly but I should mention it, go into sound manager and make sure certain sound types haven't been muted. Maybe .wav sounds have been muted but .mp3 hasn't..

I'm sure you've tried using the system without the magicjack or the wireless adaptor?

That's all I can think of at the moment. Maybe someone else with more knowledge of the subject will find this thread and help you out.

What cybermike said. I didn't happen to read your thread, but if I had I'm afraid I wouldn't have been much help either as I don't know enough about the technical side of XP. I tend not to reply to threads to say I can't help, which I'm guessing is probably what happened with the other 30 people who looked at the thread. Glad your situation is now resolved though.

As I said in my previous post >

Though I appreciate your reply I did figure it out. It had changed my speaker configuration i changed it back to use the ac97 and it worked fine.

As for the ac97 that is a long story. Needless to say I am not in any position to buy a new computer, sound card, etc. I am used to having an old POS I just do my best to deal with it.

7 years eh? So if no one replies to your threads what is the point in posting? heh I assume you mean sometimes.

Well anyway thanks again for the reply.

Sound problems are notoriously hard to fix, mainly because they're hard to diagnose; since your sound device was absent but the sound was still working, that puts a kink in any troubleshooting paths we might suggest. That's why I avoided the thread. Thanks for posting the fix though. Now when someone else has your problem it'll show up on Google and maybe they'll find this info useful!
