I tried out the new Bing search engine today - quite impressive.

What do you think? Will it challenge Google?

I don't really ever need to "search" anything extensively enough to utilize the full capacity of a search engine. Most of my browsing habits are pretty set in bookmarks.

I do like the video preview feature tho.

I've gotten very good at googling. binging, not so much.

I didn't see where it gives me anything that google doesn't. I guess we'll see in a few months if people start saying they need to bing something instead of google something.

I get the idea from their ad campaign that Microsoft is trying to position Bing as some sort of contextual search. I really don't see it, though, and challenging Google in the search business is a tall order. Something like Wolfram Alpha might be able to carve out a niche, but you really need some sort of killer feature to make a dent in Google's market share.

The fact that Google is now a verb says it all. You don't Windows anything, but you can Google whatever you damn well please, and usually find something useful.

My cursory pokes and prods don't reveal anything more than a pound-for-pound clone of Google, right down to the apps. Maybe there's something under the surface, but I don't see any compelling reason to change my homepage just yet.

There are a couple minor features that Bing has which Google doesn't, but nothing particularly important. And I still like the clean interface on Google.

Yeah - I tend agree with all of your comments... all seems pretty swish, but the bottom line is that it does not offer any "radically" new.

...and saying "I'll google it" sounds a lot cooler that "I'll bing it".... :oogle:

And remember, Google isn't just a search engine.

I do have to say I like their ad campaign a lot. Very clever, and it's damn remarkable that I find an ad campaign that I like by Microsoft. I think it's the first time.
Nevertheless, for me, web browsing is a thing of habit. It'd be hard for me to try out a new search engine, especially when google already finds virtually everything I'm looking for.
This reminds of Cuil, a rival search engine that was launched by one of Google's former employees, I believe. I checked it out once, and went straight back to Google.
Web habits are hard to break, and google was extremely efficient in making its search engine almost indispensable for everyone's browsing.

There's a whole discussion related to the services Google offers and how they tie into the search engine. The business model is really quite cleverly structured, which is a big part of Google's success.

Cynthetiq posted an audio book elsewhere which had an entire chapter devoted to this subject. I'm hesitant to derail the discussion here, but will strongly recommend you seek this book out if you're interested in the subject. In fact, Baraka_Guru I can pretty much guarantee you'll like this one based on our past interactions.

Actually, after reading the original post, I tried Bing out and it's pretty legit. It actually brought up more better quality sites than Google. I searched for "Blackberry Storm 2." I also like how you can preview movies by just having your mouse over it. Not saying it's a better search engine just what I initially found...

I think its respectable that MS is finally sticking it to Google. With Chrome OS and Android coming out and attacking MS at its roots it's good MS is doing the exact same to Google.

I was pretty amused at Collegehumor's take on bing vs google!

I see no reason to go to anything other than Google. It does everything I need a search engine to do.

I kinda liked dogpile back in the day, but I always ended up using HotBot results anyway...

Ask.com is still around, and actually doing some pretty interesting things. It couldn't pry me away from Google, but it was fun to tinker with.

"Bing" is always going to mean one of the greatest singers of the 20th century to me, not any kind of search engine. Typing "g search_item_here" in the Opera address bar works beautifully for me.

From the industry perspective: Wake me up when they create a search engine that doesn't require "search engine optimization" in order to properly rank and index results.

Bing is one of the best, but still not impressive.

Google has such a hold on the market of search engines that it's very name has become a verb for looking something up on the net. I have to agree it is a lot cooler to say "I'll google it" rather than "I'll bing it" and most people won't know what the heck you're talking about with bing. However, after having used both, I'm impressed by Microsoft's efforts. The previewing of sites and videos is a cool feature. I don't know that it will surpass Google as a primary search engine of mine, but it's certainly better than msn or windows live. Microsoft was seen as such an evil entity in the technology field with their make it or take it philosophy. With Google seeming to adopt the same philosophy it will be interesting to see how people start to view the once friendly company turned corporate giant.
