Do Not Upgrade to Leopard 10.5.6

At least for the time being. It's causing a great deal of different problems for many Mac users.

Keep an eye out at Engadget or Gizmodo (or even Apple) to find out when the issues have been fixed. For the time being, stick with 10.5.5.

Too late.

I haven't had any problems, though.

You may be one of the lucky ones. My dad's G4 17" PowerBook is on it's way to the shop because it won't boot up properly.

I doubt my dad even would know how to modify his OS, and the only thing I ever did was download VLC for him.

Apple might not be including all possible scenarios in that warning.

Baraka_Guru 12-17-2008 11:37 AM

They also said something about having moved applications around. I got this from a third-party article. I'm sure there are more things that could cause problems. PowerPC vs Intel might be a factor.

Apple is notoriously bad about admitting they made mistakes. That sounds suspiciously like a "we can't figure out what we broke, so we'll blame it on someone else until we can." I'm keeping my macbook and my wife's at 10.5.5 until further notice. Hers just got back from being at the shop for a month to replace a mobo that conveniently blew a month out of warranty (another known issue that Apple wouldn't admit to having anything to do with) so I'm not really eager to repeat that process.

I'm waiting for Snow Leopard to upgrade from Tiger, so I think I'm in the clear. Hopefully. Just downloaded a security update this morning, hopefully it doesn't mess anything up.

This is a very smart move. I'd suggest waiting maybe a month after SL comes out before upgrading, too, just to ensure that there aren't any bugs right off the bat.

FWIW I haven't had any problems with with .6 yet..

yellowmac 12-25-2008 06:19 PM

Yeah, same here. I haven't had issues with 10.5.6 on my laptop or desktop. Hopefully nothing will spring up...

Wow, that's not petty.

Petty or not apple has a long way to go before I can jump on it's band wagon. I can understand apple users and why they are apple users but if I had an apple computer right now and only an apple I'd be miserable. With all the things you can do with an apple there are things you can't and I work heavily with the things you can't.

I do find the macbook air pretty neat as well as the iphone. The iphone is currently the only iproduct that I'd currently shell money out for ATM.

So I'm not a hater, just a non-user who knows one of apples selling points was their macs would never crash and what do you know stories and articles of the crashless mac indeed crashing. Next to come, viruses maybe?

Good for you. This thread isn't "I'm love PCs, apple sucks!" It was simply intended to be a warning about a problem with an update. The problem's been fixed, by the way. Just install the combo update.

Back on track: No problems yet, but thanks for the articles.
