A gig isn't bad at all. File sizes are pretty dependent on resolutions. Lower the resolution lower the file size. I'll take better resolution over smaller file size any day. Check out sorenson squeeze or cinema craft for all your conversion needs.
and get avid.. it's way better than Premiere |

unless you need the airspeed side of Avid, it pretty much sucks. It's light years behind Final cut and Premiere Pro in interface and workflow design, mainly because since Avid the industry standard direct-to-air capable NLE, they don't have to worry too much about competition.
Most of the guys I talk to in the TV industry agree that if Premiere or Final Cut ever decides to make a full DTA server-based version of their programs, Avid will get creamed. Plus, at $5,000 for a basic turnkey, and $20,000 for an adrenaline-equipped system, the $900 Premiere Pro makes a whole lot more sense for the average non-professional user. He's making a musical slide show here, not Star Wars 7 |

While I'll admit that Avid's interface is a bit lacking, there is no better program for media management. What little I've done with FCP and Premiere, I'll stick to Avid. I can do things much faster and easier with Media Composer. The only thing that I like from Apple on that side is Motion. However, one thing I did think about is he could use After Effects for what he wants to do. I use it constantly and love it. Easy and not terribly expensive.
