Untraceable phone calls
 

I don't mean untraceable by the police or the phone company, I'm just wondering how those telemarketers manage to thwart caller IDs. (I am not a stalker) :)

all i can say is that caller id spoofing is almost as easy as IP spoofing.

Most phone companies sell a service to block caller ID information. They also sell a service to block numbers with blocked caller ID info.
Way to play both sides. :)

There is a way to do block your number from caller id it is usualy a *## kind of code the once for Georgia when useing Bell South is *67 it may be different for your area

actually here what u can do:

dial *67 before your call to block Caller ID. (free)

if you have caller ID dial *77 to block anonymous calls and *87 to deactivate this feature.


this is from an old bell atlantic card "Important Info About Privacy" i dunno if this still works but *67 should.

Yeah, a code in front of the number disables caller ID. (It shows up as "Unavailable/Unavailable").
With Bell Canada, its *67, i think.

It's all a scam by the phone companies. Caller ID was supposed to let me know who's calling. Then they sell a blocker to the telemarketers so they can't be identified. Then recently, they called to offer me a super caller ID which would ID and/or block the unknown numbers for a few bucks more a month. I'm sure they are talking to the telemarketers about selling them a super blocker to by-pass my super caller ID as well.

Also, I've gotten the code to reject the blocked calls but it only seems to work for about a day and then I have to re-enter it again.

Actually most telemarketing companies have T1 service called digital trunks and there is no caller ID available on digital trunks only on PRI. Digital trunks are a lot cheaper than PRI, and more versatile with customer equipment than analog lines.

if it says Unavailable on my caller ID I don't pick up, my family members (who have unlisted numbers)wait for the answering machine to come on if they want to talk to us. We do the same for them

Messin' with telemarketers can be fun.

Answer the phone, and when they start their pitch try enticing them into a little phone sex.

I just got the whole caller ID process to me from one of my co-workers. Kinda nifty I think. Just an FYI, if your local telephone company has caller ID, you're caller ID info is always sent out from the local company to the place you are calling. The local telephone company of the person you are calling, if they don't have newer telephone switching equipment, will send the Caller ID info even if you have a feature that blocks the sending of it.
As for telemarketers, as someone said about, the Digital Trunks don't get the Caller ID stuff. The telemarketers buy their lines from Long Distance carriers or some crap like that I think my co-worker said.
