i dont know if celeron's go above 2.0ghz.

half life 2 needs at last a 2 ghz machine.

so, it depends on what kinda gaming you gonna do.

strategy = celeron's cool.

hl2 = go p4 or xp

My dad has a 2.2 celeron and it's slow as fuck. It's fine for what he does, but I would crush that weak ass chip. If you're gonna be gaming don't get a celeron.

AMD XP

There's prices for AMD's shit. I don't know how much you want to spend so there's all of them. Free shipping too. XP 2400+ is only $80 right now. You would be very happy with that.

athlon XPs are just as cheap as celerons, and much more powerful

Me and TxStar have quiet a few AMD systems around the home/home office. (we run a small computer co)

I just got an AMD XP1700 and a Abit Nforce 2 Motherboard to run as a home theatre system. The performance and stability is very very good. Easily outperforms my 2Ghz Pentium 4.

People in the tech industry will always have opinions about the long war between AMD and Intel. Theres no clear winner, they are both making fantastic CPU's. You however do get a bigger bang for your buck with AMD and they are stable

i'm runnin an athlon 2000+ on a gigabye mobo and i think it can kick a 2ghz p4's ass pretty bad.

a friend of mine has a dell w/ a p4 and he's real surprised how fast i can get in and out of games. (i also have a 128mb card!)

My folks have a Celeron and I just got an AMD XP 2400+. The AMD smokes the Celeron, of course. If you are doing any type of 3D gaming, I don't think a Celeron will make you happy.

Remember, 3D graphics in games dont rely on the CPU as much now days. A good 3D graphics card will take the load of the CPU.

rocinante2003..you're both right and wrong. Basically the Celeron has none (or little) L2 cache ability (I think). This when under heavy processor load such as editing a home video and adding transitions and neat effects like that the Celeron is very poor at doing anything overtly complex. Also, if you say have a Radeon 9800 Pro but have a Celery 2.2 ghz you will get good performance but nothing compared to even a 2000+ Athlon XP which runs at 1.66 ghz.

If you wnat a cheap system that can run games decent I would recomend a Athlon XP 1800+. Remember though with Doom III and HL2 around the corner if you want it to run great you need a great system too though.

Ive hear'd the celeron and/or durons are quite good for overclocking.. so if your looking for a cheap thrill, id say grab one of those.

If you want performance, get a real chip.

Your absolutely right, I think my example came across wrong lol.

Just to keep it simple, for the poster without getting of topic.

The cache is a little peice of memory that is part of the CPU itself (nowdays anyhow). Its not very big, usually only a few k in size. It has 1 primary job, and that is to keep Data bursting into the CPU so that the cpu does not need to keep pulling the same information from the Main memory, which is slower compaired to cache. Its like having a pitcher or water on your desk to refill your cup once you have drunk it, instead of returning to the kitchen for more water.

The Celeron has 128k of L2 Cache running the same speed as the clock. The 2Ghz + Versions are on the 13µm Die, which means less heat. Celerons run on a 100Mhz front side bus, but its Quad pumped (100Mhzx4)

The Athon XP Thoroughbred has twice as much Level 2 Cache 256k in 2 Banks and runs on 13µm die. The XP Thoroughbred is running on a 133Mhz FSB (DDR to 266Mhz)

Doom III will need a DirectX9 Compatible Graphics card, such as the Radeon 98xx Series.
