Dell touchpad for Inspiron 9300
I got a inspiron 9300 and I was using it today and all the sudden the touchpad starts not working right. The mouse moves acrost the screen but then it stops for a second and then goes and then stops and goes. Seems to get stuck.
So i plugged in my usb optical mouse and it works great. So what do you guys think I need to do to fix this? New touchpad? something else? Also I just replaced my bad battery in it with a 9cell battery. What kind of life should a 9 cell dell laptop battery have?

a couple years if you are lucky on that battery. I find that sometimes they go even after 1 year.
as far as the touchpad, reinstall the drivers. if that doesn't work, it's replace the palmrest assembly, parts are $80+installation. http://www.impactcomputers.com/w9145-rb.html#

Looks like the same part, I buy parts from Impact for about 5 years now and find them helpful because they include instructions on removal and replacing parts for almost every part I've purchased. I'm not sure how others do it.
battery life depends on what you're doing obviously. Should be about 4 hours for most simplest things, obviously using your CD/DVD drive to play a movie you'll get 1 whole (2hr.) movie out of it and a little more.

well the reinstalled driver seems to be working better. Hopefully that fixes it. I have already invested more money in this laptop right now than I wanted to. I replaced CD/DVD drive, power cord, battery, keyboard. Seems to be working well now.
Thanks for your input. Helps out greatly. Just a quick questions though. I have herd that having the battery at 100% charge and having it pluged into the wall can heat up the battery and damage it. Is it true?

I tend to take batteries out unless I'm using them. I've gotten very long life from my batteries by doing such things.
I don't know if the battery 100% charge and the heat is the problem or if it is just overcharging and causing lower life. Again, I take the battery out of the unit when it's plugged into the wall. Sometimes I forget when I'm going to move from my bedroom to the sofa.

You should not overcharge a battery. Use it till it's dead or take it out of the laptop (but don't leave it out for over a week or so). Leaving a battery in a laptop plugged to AC power all the time decreases its lifespan drastically.
A typical dell laptop battery should last 2-3 hours of average use. |
