It's a brain-dead version of XP. Kind of a cross-over product. All advice I've ever heard or read has said to stay far away from it.
That's about all I can tell you.

I think you can pick up XP Home for under $50 U.S. but XP Pro gets a little more expensive

I completely despise ME, because of the many stability problems. I even like 98 SE over ME because it seems more stable. Like everybody else said go with XP

dont get xp unless your pc can run it!

it has a serious overhead. Also, ME has very little to do with xp, since it's based on the consumer windows kernel.

Manalone,

I run XP pro on pIII 400 and 450's all the time. Memory seems to be the key. No less than 384 MB or you got a slow POS. They hum w/ 512. XP seems to manage the resources much better than 2k. BACK ON TOPIC: ME was the worst thing that MS ever inflicted on us. Upgrade as soon as possible. And do a full format, I have never had upgrades go well, especially when going from the 95/98/me family to the nt/2k/xp.

Ack. My laptop came with WinME preinstalled. Needless to say I switched over to Win2k right away... then I realized how poor the driver support for Win2k was for my notebook (they have a full driver package for Win2k now), I made another switch to XP. Between Win2k and XP I tried to get Slackware running on my laptop, but it didn't like my laptop either (mainly the LCD). I also damaged my HD because I'm a moron, so I upgraded to a 30gig HD and bought XP. Anyone want a busted 20gig laptop HD?

Anyway, WinME is terrible. I hated it. Everyone I know who has experience with it hates it. Switch to XP.

By the way, XP runs very nicely on my sisters PII 450 with 192mb RAM. XP Pro requirements here.

does anyone else run me?

Well, not very many people I know. We have a machine at home with ME, it is only for email. Never a problem with it, (Athlon 700, 256, 20g, ATI something). Like I said, email only.

As far as comparing it to 98? Well, that seems like comparing dos 5.0 to dos 6.0. At the time it was distinct, now, who cares. Get a new OS, they are relatively cheap. Goto newegg.com, or any other reseller and buy a mouse, ram, some hardware, and buy the oem version of Xp for about 130.00.

Ive been runnin ME on various pcs since not long after it came out and never had any problems. I havent had to wipe it out any more or less than 98. Ive been running this pc for a little over a year and ive wiped it once but thats just cause i was getting rid of some partitions i didnt need anymore and i figured why not if i was gonna have to reinstall half my progs anyway. but i also have talked to people who have had nothing but problems with it. i may get xp this winter when i have some spare cash lying around but thats just cause i havent played with it much

i built a whole network with ME, it runs fine. aside from having a few more drivers and a dressed-up desktop, it's mostly the same as 98. ME does have a really shitty system restore feature that screws a lot of things up, that is probably where the bad rap originates. but if you disable it, it's about as stable as anyother msos.

Same for me. ME on a Compaq Presario. Kept crashing all the time. Wouldn't shut down properly. Finally installed Win2K last year just as XP came out. Win2K is solid however had problems also finding drivers for all laptop components. Still have problems with the HP OfficeJet I have. There is a difference between the ME and WIN2K driver that is hardware dependant. It works but can't take advantage of all its features.

ME sucks badly - at least on a laptop.

Win ME has a serious memory leak. But other then that its just an enhanced version of Win 98 with a few other features and MANY other bugs and problems that seem to sneak up on you and bite you in the ass. I have had 3 computers run ME fine, no problems at all. It even seemed to run better for most things (these people didn't play games at all) then Win 98 did on the same system. But when ME goes, it goes with a bang. The only comp that I have had ME hurt was a old P2 233 with 64mb ram (This was a few years ago so dont laugh). Anyway ME caused some crazy Memory crash and forced me to format the hdd using a Linux CD I had. Even scan disk couldn't understand that there was a drive in the system until I formatted it with Linux. Dont ask me why but thats the way it happened

Anyway, I would say use ME untill you can afford to make the switch to 2k or XP. Most of the time ME will serve you fine, but from my experience if you play games get rid of it.

ok obviously no one would buy ME now, so why are you saying that it does not supply new features, when i came out it did supply new features but compared to XP obviously there is no comparison. For quite a while before i went out and got a router i used Microsoft Internet Connection sharing that ME had to give my older comp Cable Internet access. At the time XP wasnt around so it did have advantages.

Needless to say now only my old old comp uses ME as its only a PII 233 and who really cares anyways. In its time it was better but now it is a defunct OS.

ME was crap, i bought it when i got back into computers, a couple of years ago, and within three days of dealing with its crap, i got 2000.

ME cannot network with computers that are on a different OS, at least that was my experience.

run 98 or 2000. ME isn't exactly a reliable OS, and XP sucks - from what I understand, it doesn't have DOS, and it sends the most info back to Microsoft of any windows OS so far...

I think Me is just Win98 with added bloat. I'd pick 98SE in a flash over Me, but would still prefer 2k or XP - the latter in particular has enough drivers built in that you can pretty much throw anything you want at it and it'll at LEAST recognise it.
