Linksys and DD-WRT
My router is about to die. I'm on my 4th router in almost 12 years. My most recent one is a used SMC Barricade I got for $20 ebay.
I'm trying to figure out which Linksys WRT54 to get as a new replacement. I really want to get a gigabit router, but they don't seem to be good performers. So I'm checking into getting an already flashed DD-WRT from an ebay reseller. I'm not interested in buying a new one and flashing it myself. I just don't have the time to brick and try again. The choices, but I don't really know what I want out of the $124 except that I can use it as a basic FTP and a Webserver. Things I don't really need since I do have hosting, but from time to time I do setup a honeypot to catch interesting things. $60. 00 LINKSYS WRT54G v2,V2.2, V3, V3.1+DD-WRT+216mhz+fst shp $124.99 LINKSYS WRT54GL WRT54G WRT54GS w/DD-WRT 1GB SD/MMC MOD Can anyone with more knowledge on this give me some insight? Most appreciated and thank you. |
I have a WRT54GL I grabbed off Newegg and flashed it myself, the process is really pain free.
I can't say I use or need all the various options of the DD firmware but I haven't noticed any issues with the performance either. |
I did it myself also with a GS. As long as you make sure of the version, its really easy.
If you have hosting already, the SD mod isn't really worth it. |
I ended up buying a WRT350N for $149, now I have a gigabit network. Works well with the Tivo after I updated the usb adapter to a 802.11g model.

The WRT54G performs like shit over ppp, couldn't get more than 15-20mbit thru. Now my buffalo gigabit whatever has shown 60mbit... I'm happy.
