powering LCD

So I have this LCD. And it runs off 12v DC. And I dont want to half to buy a power cord for it. So I got thinking. My psu puts off 12v. Can I take one of the 12v leads for a HD and use it to power the LCD? I dont see any reason why it wouldnt work. I checked the yellow and black wire and its a constant 12.5vdc

Thanks,

what kind of lcd are we talking here?

I ran a little 4 line 60(i think) character lcd that way without any issue. but anything much bigger then that I would be pretty hesitant to try that...

I am talking a LCD monitor. See this is in a machine. I put a computer and a LCD in it. And the old monitor ran off 220v. This LCD 12v. I figured it would be able to run off the PSU. What issue do u think i would have? not enough amp?

Wattage, actually. Viewsonic lists their LCD's as ranging in consumption from 23w to 64w. You ought to be able to get away with the low end of the spectrum, but 50-60w is a pretty heavy load to put on a PSU that's already running your PC. It's questionable whether or not your PSU can supply that much power.

Well. Its a shuttle pc barebore i bought off newegg.

here is the link for the barebone.

All I added was a HD/floppy/CPU/PSU

PSU:

CPU:

HD and floppy I already had.

This LCD is a 13.3" LCD. I am unsure on the wattage. I am buying a open frame LCD and a controller for it. Hopefully I can get some documentation for the controller so I can get a # for the wattage.

You know you can get power cords for like $.50 on ebay right? Or at the local PC shop for like 3 dollars? I'd "bite the bullet" and fork out 3 bux before I started splicing my PSU and possibly frying it.

Well theres a reason Id like to do it this way. one reason being I cant find a power cord that will run off 220v. Everything in the machine is 220v.

You ought to be able to get an adaptor that goes from 220v AC to 12v DC without too much trouble. It'll cost more than $3, granted, but still. I know I've seen them at Radio Shack and the like.

If you're hell-bent, based on the hardware you've posted above I see no reason why it shouldn't work, although I'm speaking from the position of never having attempted anything like this before. That PSU ought to be able to push enough power through to run the display, given that it's not very heavily loaded by the other hardware.

So, yeah. It ought to work, but proceed with caution. Screwing this up could leave you out both monitor and PSU.

Thanks for the response guys. I am planning on tring this to see if it works. I will half to let you guys know how well it works. Wiring this any other way would be a royal pain or I would just do it that way.

Looks like it pulls around 30watts at max brightness. Should have the lcd sometime this week to try it out.
