The Open Source/Freeware/Gratis Software Thread
So there is a great Open Source/Freeware development community out there, their projects are usually as good and often better than expensive software. The problem is, they don't make money like popular software, and aren't talked about as much, so it's harder to find them.
That's where this thread comes in: let's compile a list of the best freeware/Open Source programs of all kinds, with quick descriptions, updates, links, notes (like OS compatibility, versions, etc). Everyone can add their opinions, and ratings for programs and make new suggestions, or PM me, and I'll edit this post to show updates to the list. Also, please make requests for what type of freeware/Open Source application you are looking for, I'll keep a list of that as well. I'd like to see conversations about which program works best, user-friendliness, etc. Let's go: (For simplicity/readability purposes, I have hidden the list, you can show each section individually by clicking it.) Quote:
Augi's main post! Full of great, free, awesome recommendations for your Open Source needs  Thanks to everyone who helped build this list, I encourage everyone to submit new suggestions, requests, etc. |
For Word Editor, there is Open Office.
There is a great ftp client that I use: Filezilla. |
Audacity Audio Editor
Audacity is easily the best free audio editor I've ever used. Tons of features, import/export various formats and it's easy to use. |
Gimp is a freeware, cross-platform alternative to something like Photoshop. It doesn't have nearly as many features, but the basic functionality is there.
And while Filezilla is a good free FTP solution, Mac users might want to try Cyberduck--if not for the quality, then at least for the name. And, yes, there really is a duck. |
audio / video:
winamp to listen to music/video audacity to edit audio. mp3 my mp3 to record from different sources. VLC to watch any videos possible. text: open office . org is the best one out there. completely like MSoffice images: gimp just like photoshop but free. the interface isn't as nice. irfan view awesome program to view your files. it's the one I've been using for over 8yrs. download tools: phex is like most kazaa style program but this one is open source so no spyware. utorrent this is my torrent software of choice. much more stable than the others like azerus. |
For myself, almost everything on the machine (except Windows and Office which came with the machine) is freeware/Open source. Some of the good ones have already been mentioned. Others I like to use are:
1) HTML-KIT http://www.htmlkit.com/ Text editor/HTML/PHP/general purpose coding. It's KILLER feature is the ability to edit files on servers remotely. That way I don't have to connect to the server, download the file, make the changes, save and upload the file. Saves a tremendous amount of time. Plus it has plug-ins for almost anything you can think of 2) Exact Audio Copy (EAC) Exact Audio Copy CD ripper/encoder This is the Cadillac of CD rippers. It just won't give up -- put in a scratched up CD and if this can't get out the music, nothing will. Fast and does encoding, tags and everything else 3) HydraIRC http://www.hydrairc.com/ IRC client. If you know or use IRC then you'll appreciate Hydra IRC. Nuff said. 4) BurnAtOnce Burn At Once Very simple CD mastering/burning software. Does audio and data CDs with ease. If you're looking for something to burn DVDs with, try deepburn - the free version http://www.deepburner.com/?r=download 5) PDF Creator http://sourceforge.net/projects/pdfcreator/ Free program to create PDFs. It installs a virtual printer on your machine that when you select it, the output is the PDF. Fast, reliable, just plain awesome. Those are all the ones I can think of for now. |
Great contributions, everyone. I'll update the OP now.
EDIT: Updated. |
Nvu - Dreamweaver / frontpage style web editing
http://nvudev.com/index.php Ubuntu - Linux Install that comes pre-packaged with applications http://www.ubuntu.com/ wikipedia list of open source software packages: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...tware_packages - this list includes video editing stuff, i never used any of them and i don't know anyone who has yet, so i can't put my stamp of approval on any of them yet. |
ExactAudioCopy is definitely the best audio ripper out there, and jiGGafellz' Step-by-Step Guide to Secure CD Ripping makes setting it up for the best result nice and easy! :)
|
Free Download Manager is a good Windows download manager/accelerator that is GPL'd.
|
Updated! Thanks for the sticky, SecretMethod70.
:) |
I'm a big fan of TagScanner for audio tag editing
For playing audio, MediaMonkey was fairly popular among OiNK users, though I have to admit I haven't tried it out yet. |
oh nice! thanks for updating it in just 1 post! that's fucking awesome!
|
Another audio player that I have not tried but know of people who like it: http://www.musikcube.com/ :)
|
Snapfiles has tons of freeware and shareware in just about every category.
http://www.snapfiles.com/ |
http://www.gomplayer.com/
GOM Player (Gretech Online Movie Player) is a freeware media player for Microsoft Windows. Key strengths are the ability to play the majority of media files without the need to obtain a codec, and the ability to play some broken media files, both advantages over traditional players This plays literally any video, it plays broken video files as well... this is the best media player out there |
OK, thanks, I will update the OP soon. :)
New request: Does anyone know a good flash creating program? A Macromedia Flash type app? |
Miro is a "free, open source internet tv and video player." It's great if you're like me and don't have cable, or you don't like planning your life around the TV guide or fiddling with recording devices.
It's full featured and easy to organize--similar to RSS clients. There's even HD options. Be sure to check out the Miro tutorial videos available. Available for both Mac OS X and Windows. |
Xero plug-ins for Photoshop.

A few that I don't see mentioned:
Image Apps: Inkscape - A free vector graphics editor. Lots of fun to play with, similar to Illustrator or CorelDraw Office: Abiword - Just the 'Word processor' portion of the Office Suite idea, but much faster, smaller, and lighter weight than either Open Office Writer or MS Word. Games: Battle For Wesnoth - Fun, multiplayer turn-based strategy. OSes: Fedora - Another Linux distribution, concentrating on being pure free/open source, including a completely open development process, with a rapid release/development cycle. SuSE - Yet another Linux distro. Not personally very familiar with it, but also well thought-of. By the by, all of the linux distros mentioned include a 'livecd' option, so you can try them out without installing anything. Also, as a minor nit, the OP doesn't really make a distinction between Free as in beer and Free as in Freedom. Here's an essay that explains the difference, and why it matters. |

Oh, I noticed '-Movie editing' in the requests section, and that reminds me of these two:
Kino - Video editing for linux. Simple interface, seems pretty intuitive to me. Not nearly as feature-ful as the 'big' editors, though. Cinelerra - A much more advance video editing program for linux. Much too complicated for the simple stuff that I do, and my very limited skillset. Seems impressive, but the interface (to me) is way to confusing. |

I agree, I've been using it to record my vinyl onto my computer so that I can covert the wave files to MP3s and put into player. Before I convert them, I burn the .wav files onto CDs and print cover art, so that I have a CD version of my album too. |
Wow, amazing responses. It has been a really long time since I updated the OP, I apologize, I've been pretty busy.
Time for some updating, possibly some new categories/reorganizing. Thanks so much, you guys. Free is truly awesome. EDIT: Added some more. Thanks guys. Will edit to add more of people's recommendations, hopefully soon. Quote:

????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? An updated list of programs I am looking for. All of them are for academic purposes, so I am not sure how I can be helped.
|
Anyone know of any project management software? Especially for Mac? I'm currently trying out GanttProject.
I'll let you know how it turns out. |
I have to mention Deluge. An awesome lightweight open source cross-platform BitTorrent client.
|
If you are using IE instead of Firefox I suggest getting IE7Pro which will give you many of the same features that make Firefox so nice to use.
Enhance Internet Explorer's Tabbed Browsing Capabilities 1. Double click to close tab. 2. Open new tab from address bar. 3. Enable/disable tab browse history manager. 4. Enable/disable crash recovery 5. Move the IE menu bar above the address bar 6. Hide search bar. 7. Modify the maximum number of parallel connections to the web server. 8. Select the external program to view page source Super Drag and Drop With Super Drag and Drop enabled, you can open new links by simply dragging and dropping the link on the page. You can also Drag and Drop to search selected words with the default search engine or save the selected photo when Shift is held down. Mouse Gesture Mouse Gesture allow the user to execute commonly performed tasks (open/close a tab, go back, go forward , print , scrolling page etc.) by drawing a simple symbol on the screen. Crash Recovery Crash Recovery automatically restores all opened pages after a crash happened. Save Page to Image Flexible and easy-to-use tool that converts html page from any URL to image. It captures the whole web page's content into JPG, BMP , GIF , PNG or TIFF on the fly. Quick Proxy Switcher Different internet connections do often require completely different proxy server settings and it's a real pain to change them manually. AD Blocker Blocks all forms of advertising, including Flash ads, rich media, fly-ins, slide-ins, pop-ups, pop-unders, spyware and adware ads, and messenger ads. Greasy monkey alike User Script IE7Pro Script is to Internet Explorer7 as Greasemonkey is to Firefox. It lets you remix the Web via scripts. Inline Search Adds the inline search bar like firefox has, finds as you type, use the F3 and Enter Key to cycle between multiple results, highlight all results. Spell Check IE7Pro Spell Check will check any text you enter and alert you to possible errors by adding a red underline to any potentially misspelled words. |

I am loving KeePass.
http://filehippo.com/img/ex/134__keepass.gif KeePass (****) - "KeePass is a free/open-source password manager or safe which helps you to manage your passwords in a secure way." Choice. Built in random password generator, password folder structure for different systems, auto-types user name and password, and master password for locking the program. Helps me manager all my identities, because there is a whole internet outside my safety zone, TFP. |

So I'm using MusikCube now, and it works great, except for one thing. When I open it up and click on a song or artist, my Motherboard beeps. WTF? I've googled this and nothing comes up.
BTW guys, this list is getting quite long and for readability and ease of use, is there any way to add links that would bring us to a specific point on the page? Like have a link that says "Multimedia Applications", and clicking it would scroll down to that point in the post? If not, any suggestions for better organization are welcome. |

OK, I found it, thanks Cynthetiq. Although, none of those links at first seemed to address my question, so I was wondering if I had done something wrong, asked a question wrong, or if there was thread before this one about freeware, etc.
Still, cool, looks much better now, I hadn't thought using about the hide feature. :) |
How does one make the links such that it just scrolls to the point in the article and not open another page? I am not fantastic with HTML and do not know the terminology to get good search results.

Oh yeah. I'll be damned. I went straight to the original thread and was disappointed to find it closed (I couldn't view the source in a quote) that I completely forgot to quote your post.

I had some free time tonight because I was up all last night to drop a friend off at the airport. Having slept all day I am really awake and regret that now.
I updated all my links for fun! Instead of opening pages it takes you to the list directly. Check it out if you feel like it. I also have a new program that I have been using for a while but not mentioned. Rainlendar is a customizable calendar that displays the current month. It is a very lightweight application that doesn't use much system resources or take much space on your desktop. |
I love this thread! I'm looking for an open source DVD software player for my laptop. For some reason, (actually not some reason, probably the fact that my Toshiba laptop, aside from being a Toshiba, has a HD-drive) my laptop will not play DVD's.
|

yes, that did it! Excellent, now I can delete the Toshiba crap!
|
I'm pretty sure that this hasn't been mentioned here before www.portableapps.com, it's a site of slimmed down open source applications that can fit on a usb flash drive, so you can take your favorites on the road. I use it at work a lot so i can use thunderbird to get my email using the company's internet connection, but without leaving a trace on the computer.

I had to help a friend find some low memory alternatives to her favorite programs, and it came down to my favorite of things to do: test media players.
I ran with ones I trust: Foobar2000, MusikCube, MediaMonkey, and Songbird. Winamp is a resource hog, as is WMP and iTunes. I started of with my favorite: FB2K. After importing all my library, consisting of a variety of my old MP3s, my newly ripped OGG Vorbis, WavPack Hybrid lossless, FLAC images, etc etc, FB2K can play everything I throw at it (well Monkey's Audio APE requires you to download a plugin, but it is one of the recommended plugins). It foots about 36MB with the default skin and depending on how complex I wanted to make the skin, never went above 50MB. Given it is a swiss-army tool for audio conversion and tagging it is still my favorite Audio Tool. It is only for windows, but works in Wine pretty well. Songbird is actually really cool. It is a media player and internet browser in one. It is built on top of the same code that makes Firefox, and has a similar sidebar interface as itunes (only black-- hawt!). It requires you to front a lot of memory however, running up 140MB. This is the newly made 0.5 beta and I know it will get better. Now it supports all common formats: MP3, WMA, M4A. It even supports OGG and FLAC. However not WavPack, nor images. Woop-die, how many of you are as crazy as me? I know Shuak knows what a CUE sheet is, though! Native media library and sorting capabilities. Songbird is cross compatible with all operating systems. Next came Mediamonkey. Crap. Most of the features are only offered in the gold version. You can't even make it search a folder for media. It plays everything though, minus *-images. The gold version looks to have all the same features as FB2k. It sports low footprint, ~26MB. I don't like it any more. MusikCube blew my mind! Native library and folder watch, standard as well as non-standard formats are playable (except for images, which is a big deal for me as all my lossless archives are images) and sports the smallest footprint- 9MB! It is excellent for what it is designed for. For any normal use I recommend MusikCube. For advanced use, go with FooBar2000. For pretty go with Songbird. I know FB2K and Songbird can be made to work with iPods, no clue on MusikCube. |

Have read about cue sheets on Hydrogen Audio for years but never have played with those. I finally have some actual hard drive space now and will be expanding my digital collection though My favourite open-source programs are the GIMP (running 2.4.4, might go 2.4.5 one day), and OpenOffice.org. The only thing keeping MS word 2000 on my systems is the poor pre-word 97 table creation in OO. Firefox sees a lot of use from me as well, that shares duty with Opera as they both have their own 'must have' features that complement each other nicely depending on what I am doing. This forum gets nothing but the best though - Opera. But that is strictly my opinion and such comparisons belong in another thread obviously. Which gets me thinking about posting my thoughts on my own website for those people probably not interested in them..... edit:fixed spelling |
I am looking for good remote desktop software. I have tried the flavors of VNC (real, tight, and ultra) with little success. These applications would constantly crash or freeze while viewing my server (desktop) back home.
Anyone ever try LogMeIn? I haven't yet but want to. |
For anyone interested, found some new software:
desktop Screenshot application Bilderman Seems the site has recently reached its bandwidth limit... oops. |
I use it all the time. It works great. The only limitation of the free version is no file transfers.

freeware to collate printed PDF documents
So I am working on a project were the members (over 20 in all) have been documenting and reporting their work as PDF printouts. I can't blame them. For the past three years every task presented to us must have been submitted in the form of a printed PDF.
However, none of them realize the pain it is to go through those PDFs, copy the text out, paste it into a new document only to have to print it out again. I have a program that is commercial trialware, and it places this nasty watermark on every page. It isn't overbearing, just unprofessional. I know there are plenty of pay-for PDF tools, however I don't have the money for them, and I don't require all the editing features. I merely want to take multiple PDF pages and collate them into a single document. Any freeware tools out there? |
Try PDF Split and Merge. This is a open source program. There is a commercial program with the same name but this one is free.

All right, new task. Find a bandwidth and upload limiter. Some requirements:
I hate working with ports, I would rather limit by application. My tenant installed Netlimiter on the computers however I doubt in the program's legality... So I am looking for a new one and will show it to him as a free and legal alternative. |
I'm looking for a program that will display system information:
CPU temp in/out traffic rates hard drive read/write rates RAM usage, etc Like a crack addict I keep coming back to Samurize, however never create a working model. |

Thank you very much to all the contributors to this thread, especially biznatch for getting it started, and Augi, for keeping it updated and quite comprehensive. Kudos.
Afterthought: Although I don't rightly need any new apps., I do have a very keen interest in FB2K thanks to your summary of its capabilities, Augi. I'll look into it, and see if I'll like using it better than Realplayer plus. Thanks again, all. |
No problem. It is our pleasure.
Some of you may have noticed and wondered what the TFP thread generator is that Cynthetiq has used. Well I finally asked what the hell it is. It is nifty at best... but I am addicted to it now. I am trying to master FASS (Forum ASSistant) so that it works a little bit more intuitively, that and doesn't copy the wrong provider name for news articles. I read on HA forums how to make a Lite version of FB2K. It runs at 20...22MB, and minimizes to 2.2MB. Awesomeness. |
Some updates:
I've included alternatives to Pidgin, the multi-protocol instant messenger, they are Miranda and Trillian. An additional browser is added: Maxthon. It is very much like IE but without the loop holes, supposedly. A friend of mine recommended it to me after a long and faithful run with Firefox. He prefers the features and site compatibility. Added Security application: Tor- maintain your network anonymity. |
There is an multi-platform messenger available for Firefox called 'meebo', it opens just like another tab, and it is available as a download from Firefox extensions.

|
On a recent excursion with fellow colleagues, I have a rather large collection of pictures and movies from various cameras. I use Exifer to handle all the incorrect date and time info for the photos, but now is the challenge to do the same process to the videos.
I have a utility, Bulk Rename Utility, that does a good job at renaming movies based on the creation date, but I need something that will do batch changes to the creation dates of files. I know, it would have been so much simpler to tell these folks to set their date and time correctly on the cameras. |
I have just configured Tor and I love it. It is ready to use right of the box (installer) for Windows, and configuring applications to use it was a little weird at first.
Some things I have noticed are one should use localhost instead of the 127.0.0.1 IP... might be my issue though. Using Tor I have bypassed my ISP's finicky service with my instant messengers and I have yet to lose my IM services. Currently, I am experimenting with torrent applications, but I am having complete technical difficulties with that. |
I don't really like Tor for daily usage since it creates such a lag.

I scanned quickly through the entire thread and didn't see one of my favorite programs:
Media Player Classic http://www.free-codecs.com/download/...er_Classic.htm has the look and feel of WMP 6.4, but plays just about anything (including Apple qt/mov files, with appropriate codec, as well as RealMedia files). if this has already been mentioned, my apologies and feel free to delete |
Quote:
VLC is cross platform and plays everything media wise, except Real Media. Foobar2000 plays everything audio and has a media player and converter... |
Here's my list:
|
MY essentials are:
7-Zip AVG 8 Free KeePass MusikCube uTorrent + PeerGuardian FoxIt Media Player Classic Firefox (dur!) Eclipse for developing. EDIT: Also, Notepad++ is the business! |
Well this sucks. AVG Anti Spyware and AVG Anti-Rootkit tools are no longer available as freeware and one must purchase the internet security suite. :cringe:
Also updated Security and Diagnostic tools. I have made a distinction between security applications and diagnostic tools on whether or not the tool provides real time security or is a user based scanning utility. Searching through TrendMicro has lead me to a page that includes a list of all their freeware security solutions. Some are all ready on my lists and I wouldn't mind checking out more of their products.

I have created a simple but interesting locking mechanism on my Win XP system. I use KeePass to manage all my passwords. For portability I have KeePass installed on my flash drive. In essence, if my computer cannot find my USB drive with my KeePass KDB when booted up, it will lock the users out.
Things needed:
Follow these steps
I am open to suggestions. |
Interesting stuff Augi, but what if that USB key fails one day? Are you locked out as well? Or do you have a backup of the file somewhere?

Holy crap I think I just found a pidgin replacement!
It is called Digsby. It is an IM, email, and social networking tool in one. I don't need it to run my emails, Thunderbird handles that and my RSS feeds. But it runs perfectly with all my instant messengers, minus my IRC channels, but also updates crap from my myspace page. There seems to be something wrong with it's facebook plugin (it doesn't ask for a password and then says authentication error, gee-wiz I wonder why?), but the Facebook IM seems to work. It is still a beta but it might already take over for pidgin. Cross Platform compatible. |
someone told me about digsby months ago... i just tried it because you posted about it.
i don't care about the social network things at the moment, maybe when i register them for the family website stuff. Other than that, no big for that feature for me. i do like trillian since it fits on my USB key, I'll try this out tho and see how it works for me. |

Isn't SyncBack great? My photography buddies love it since it is a one stop solution for backing up their media on their laptops and desktops.
The latest release of Firefox RC1 has fixed a lot of problems I was experiencing with flash based media. Also, coincidentally, my PDF Printer started working at that exact moment. I tried PING and it seemed to work out on some systems. I didn't go through the full recovery process because they wouldn't let me but it recognized everything up till the final "Do it" step. I used TrueCrypt to encrypt my hard drive with Windows on it... flippin awesome. I used an AES encryption scheme (fast, reliable, however standard government encryption scheme, that makes me believe that they could have means of by passing the encryption), and my idle system resources only increased by 2%. |
Just so everyone knows: mIRC can go Spoiler: fuck itself. I have always hated that program and felt it to be convoluted. xChat is so much easier to use, and intuitive.

IMHO I use avast antivirus instead of avg. Its free also and it updates itself on its own and tells when the update automatically.

Included are a Windows version, a commandline version (for scheduling by the task scheduler or for use from administrator scripts), a screensaver version, a DLL library (for use from programming languages), versions for Windows X64, and the complete sources." A really great tool. I have set it up as my screen saver to defrag stuff while the computer is at rest. It is fast and low memory footprint.
http://i.filehippo.com/img/ex/786__recuva.gif Recuva (****)(W) - "freeware Windows utility to restore files that have been accidentally deleted from your computer" It is really nifty. Made by the same people that make CCleaner, it does what it says and looks simple to use. |

hey, I'm looking to burn WMV and ? other video files to DVD that will play in a DVD player.
I did get ImgBurn and that didn't work well. vids played only in slow motion and in normal speed only played for 30-40 seconds and jumped to the next scene on the disk. I got the free DeepBurn and I can't see anywhere in it's menues where it burns DVD's the Roxio that came on my comp is Roxio De which is a crippleware Dell edition (why they stick it on my comp is a mystery to me, it's worthless) they have Roxio Easy DVD (something like that) at best buy for $30 but it's a version they don't support any longer... I'd rather buy a tool then get several free tools (file converter, shrinker, burner) I'd like to keep the process simple. I was wondering is DVD shrink really necessary if the total size of the files is less than the 4.7 gig DVD RW discs ? should I just start a new thread ? I did search the tech forum. |
Videohelp is the best. Unfortunately, you won't find simple without paying in DVD authoring. I can't find the program I used oh so long ago to do precisely this, but I do remember DVD Flick does the job. I don't recommend using it to compress the video to fit to a 4.7GB DVD. I would use DVD Shrink for that.
As far as I know, ImgBurn was never designed to convert video to playable DVDs. The only features remotely near that is recognizing a set of DVD VOBs and burn those appropriately so that they play in an ordinary DVD player. It can take audio files and burn them as a playable audio CD... but that is it so far. Quote:

well, lets say I only have several files totalling 2 gig's in all, why would that need shrinking ?
I looked at Flix and after reading this Quote:

I bet it was because they set it to compress the output to fit onto a standard DVD. That is why I never used it. There was something else, but I cannot recall the name as it is on my home server (shutdown till I get back to the States). I can't recall estimates but I am fairly sure I used Flick to convert 4 hours of videos in roughly 6 hours, then used Shrink to compress the output to a standard DVD (1.5 hours at maximum smoothness). I don't remember Flick taking so long when it was not set to compress things itself.
Like I said, use Videohelp. Their sections on converting X to Y are pretty extensive and they have long tables of tools all categorized by their functions. EDIT: I would just like to stress the fact that when one "compresses" a DVD with programs like DVD Shrink, ratDVD, ShrinkTo5, etc, that the video data is not being compressed- as in lossless fashion- but is transcoded to smaller size in a lossy manner- video data is removed. How noticeable the lost data will appear depends on what algorithm is doing the transcode, also the time one wishes for the algorithm to run. The perceived likeness is referred as "transparency". Think of lossy transcoding as like looking through a dirty window: the less dirt, better you see the original picture, so the window is more transparent. Lifewise, the better the transcode, the less you perceive as different, the more transparent the transcode seems. I personally use DVD Shrink to use a maximum smoothness algorithm, and do a deep analysis of the video to search for optimal stream bitrates. In order for one to losslessly compress a video, they would have use something like MLC... but I haven't the foggiest idea how to use it. |

Even if you buy the full version of Nero, that comes with a virtual drive to mount your ISO files to, you may still need DVD Shrink or DVD fab if you want to remove copy protection and shrink a dual layer to fit on a single. I've always used the ISO method, with a virtual drive, its just easier. Shrink and Fab are easy to use and will convert Files to ISO, then just mount the ISO on your virtual drive and burn using whatever software you like. And no, as Hain said, if the file is smaller theres no need to do anything. Its only when a file is bigger than what will fit on a standard single layer DVD that you need to compress it. Theres no need to make it bigger. |
