I think I am reading this wrong.
Why mount the ISO? There are plenty of apps, like ImgBurn (and even Nero), that can burn ISOs directly to disc. One need not even mount it for playing, as VLC will just read the VOB data within. As far as I am concerned: one does not even need to create ISOs period. For new / large DVDs, ISOs will usually not fit on file systems like FAT[32], thus multi-system storage and access are difficult. VLC can play the VOB data exactly as if it were a DVD and ImgBurn will recognize this VOB data and burn appropriately. I never knew Nero could mount ISOs. If I had I might have taken better care of the Nero software that came with my NEC burner. |

Yes you did tell me, but now that the discussion has moved here, I might as well ask again for those in out in TV Land.
It is convenient to use ISOs. I use WavPack/FLAC-images with CUE-sheet for all my ripped CDs; I understand. Until I start dabbling in DVD Audio (or Windows embraces ext file systems, HA!), I will stick with FAT32 for my data drives since it is universally compatible without extra clicks and mount/write privileges. But what Cynthetiq said is correct, in uncompressed media details. If the transcoded media is larger, it generally will be of better quality, unless one has encoded the lossy media into a lossless container (shame shame shame). |
is there such a thing as a freeware winrar of some kind ? a ton of rapidshare seems to be winrar.
the whole WMV to DVD this is complicated...different brands of discs, mystery glitches between apps and hardware...much reading necessary. I think I'll buy the Roxio easy CD and DVD creator even though I read it won't recognise some type of sound encoding. it's only 29.99 at best buy. |
7-Zip

for the past several years (since 05, I think) I've been using WinRar 3.51, which was downloaded as a free trial version (40 days). There is a nag screen at startup, but other than that, this trial version is still working. Now granted, some of the more advanced functions (password protecting an archive, for example) don't work, but archive compressing and uncompressing (i.e. the main function of the program) is still going strong. this may have changed in the interim, I don't know, but thats how it used to be. |
7-Zip is free, free I say! I just dont pay for anything I dont have to & right now the only thing I pay for is DSL, period. I have free DVD sofware, spyware scanners, anti-virus, firwall, etc, etc etc, all of which have been mentioned in this thread and all are fairly easy to use. Thats why this thread is so cool, its free.

Since I am reminded:
How do I completely disable all auto runs? I currently use TweakUI, but that failed me the other day when a friend's USB drive tried to install software on my computer. |
This is driving me up a fuckin wall!
I want an application for WinXP that will format a drive larger than 32GB to FAT32. I know it is possible- else how would all those external drives larger than 32GB be sold with that as the default file system? I tried the application Swissknife, and it suck amazingly. Every time it either crashes or doesn't recognize the drive or doesn't initialize the drive for WinXP to see. |

I recently made the switch to GNU/Linux, Kubuntu, and I can't get my TFP favy, Pawsoft's FASS, to work through Wine. I have been looking for other forum assistants, and wondering if anyone knows of more that I can try through Wine.
|
sadly... FASS is the only BBCode editor I've been able to find that is worth anything.

Found another winzip type app: "Windows/Linux: Open-source file archive manager PeaZip creates and extracts files from a number of the most popular archiving formats, including ZIP, RAR (read only), 7Z, and more. Our nod for file archive managers normally goes to previously mentioned 7-Zip, but with an attractive, user-friendly interface, customizable right-click options, and a standalone portable version you can add to your thumb drive, PeaZip has a charm worth checking out. PeaZip is free, Windows and Linux only."

Just want to say it again: Ubuntu is the best GNU/Linux system for someone that knows nothing about Linux. Wicked simple to install and with little to no reading online, I have figured most everything I need to run on it.
|
The reason I stopped using Ubuntu is because I was unable to configure wireless on it. I spent many hours browsing forums, trying different things, but to no avail :(
Other than that, it was awesome. Extremely efficient, very fast, easy install  |
weird. I never got ubuntu to run on 3 different machines, even as a bootable CD.
I stopped trying and moved onto other things that were more productive. |
Were these machines laptops? I think ubuntu might have problems with the laptop screens(or video card) sometimes, so adding boot flags helped me get it on to my laptop. Actually, it's amazing, but all I had to do to find this out was google my laptop's model number (F730us) + linux (or ubuntu).
Often times linux fans will have figured it out and are helping others out with the same machine in linux forums. |
I've just found some great software for making panoramic photos:
Hugin I found this over at opensource living.com, (which if you've never been there, is a great list of open source software. I've been looking for some time for something decent and free, since Photoshop Elements does an unsatisfactory job of compiling the shots into a coherent image. This is a very easy system, basically load the images you want to compile and the program takes over, shows you a preview and then joins the images...and voila: http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c3...choo/coal2.jpg I then used GIMP photo software to crop the ragged edges of the panorama and compressed it for uploading to the net, cause it turned out to be a 92MB shot! |
hey that's a cool thing there ^^
I have an app for equilizing the volume levels of your mp3 collection. so the relative volumes is fairly close...so you don't need to constantly change the volume ya know. MP3Gain Downloads |

Synergy
This is a great little app that allows one computer to act as a keyboard/mouse server for another. For example, I often use my laptop on the keyboard shelf for my desktop, thereby blocking the desktop keyboard. That used to mean that I couldn't really use my desktop at the same time as my laptop, but now my laptop acts as a keyboard/mouse server for my desktop. I just scroll the mouse up and the pointer switches over to the desktop screen which is above my laptop. The keyboard automatically switches over too. And I can even copy/paste text across computers! |
WhoCrashed
Summary: Whenever a computer running Windows suddenly reboots without displaying any notice or blue screen of death, the first thing that is often though about is a hardware failure. In reality, most crashes are caused by malfunctioning device drivers and kernel modules. In case of a kernel error, most computers running Windows do not show a blue screen unless they are configured to do so. Instead these systems suddenly reboot without any notice. WhoCrashed shows the drivers which have been crashing computer with a single click. Normally, debugging skills and a set of debugging tools are required to do post-mortem crash dump analysis. This program checks for available crash dump files and checks for reponsible modules. In most cases it can pinpoint the offending drivers which have been causing misery on your computer system in the past. It does post-mortem crashdump analysis and presents all gathered information in a comprehensible way. |
I need to come back to TFP at some point and update my thread-jacks (posts). I have a lot of new toys.
Electric Sheep screen saver - bad ass Sandboxie - condom for your computer. FixVTS - repairs DVD information in VOBs. Many of my backed up DVDs' menus no longer play correctly with the latest VLC. I have had to run FixVTS on all of them so that it recognizes the buttons on the menus. Stupid new VLC. And everything I use is from Portable Apps now. |

Cool, I got pointed to this app: Adobe Consulting | User Experience Hub: New Flex Style Explorer: Jam-Packed with New Features
It can run in browser from the adobe site, or you can download it to run it offline. This app allows you to edit the CSS attributes directly, with a great GUI; I'm extremely impressed with how easy this app is to use. This works on all platforms. This tool is amazing for web developpers and webdesigners. |

2 additional freeware programs, one which might interest more people, and the other is pretty specific:
Stellarium Stellarium A planetarium freeware program. I tried out Stellarium since I am in an astronomy class, and it is really cool. There is a version of it at portableapps, too ( Stellarium Portable | PortableApps.com - Portable software for USB drives ).
I have some BAT scripts that make ImgBurn and Skype portable. Both have command switches to engage them as portable but it is a shame that they can't be set permanently (yet). Any document to PDF
Have you tried PDF995? I've tried several document to PDF applications, and this one works best for me. It will translate webpages, image files and word files to PDF. You can save the created PDF under a user-specified filename or just print it.:)[/COLOR]

I have found a Windows application that will format any size drive to FAT32. Other programs have limitations in them which are unacceptable. The software is h2format, and I have a separate thread dedicated to this program.

Another very nice open-source/freeware program that runs across multiple OS/Platforms is X-Box Media Center. It's what I use for my media center on an XP box. I have put all my DVD's in an ISO format and XBMC picks them up and uses different scrapers to find Poster art, cast and crew, synopsis, etc. You can also use it for your music and it will also scrap for album covers, etc.

I'm looking for a bandwidth monitor...something like bitmeter that can hang out next to the clock. I'm sure most of us know about Comcast 250gb limit. well I got an email about their new bandwidth usage tool, a tab on my account page. so far this month I've racked up 380+ gb and last month clocked in at 512gb !
the email I got was not a warning pointed at me personally, it was a mass email about the tool. the rep on the phone said if they were warning me personally it would be via snail mail. (she thought) since alot of people use other email services their primary email and also change phone numbers w/o notifying Comcast. but she also said flagrant abuse could lead to a years suspension of internet. so anyway, looking for a free tool to monitor useage. |

While it feels like tilting at windmills, I'd recommend using Google to search SF projects: "network usage monitor Windows site:sourceforge.net". |
I was told uTorrent has a tool in the new version, but I haven't updated it yet. it won't reflect total bandwidth use though.

I use samurize. With the right plugins, it gives me drive status, network usage and config, memory usage, temperatures, etc.
