Router help needed.
 

Ok LS and I have a Linksys -G system. The router is connected to her puter and the USB adapter is connected to mine.

We have great connection between the puters, the problem is mine won't get internet.

It states a cable is missing or IP address cannot be confirmed

I have tried Linksys and haven't called customer service yet but have done every troubleshoot their website gives.

Is it my computer and I need to reset the IP adress or something or have I missed a step and can get around this?

pull up the command prompt and type

ipconfig -all >c:\ipconfigtxt.txt

press enter then type

c:\ipconfigtxt.txt

and press enter again.

copy all the text in the window and paste it back for us.

are you saying you are also directly plugged into the router via a USB plug from your computer DIRECTLY to the router's USB port?

Please also provide your linksys model number.

On hers I get:

Well, I had this whole thing typed out on IP addresses and then I went back to read your post and I'm confused.

She's directly connected to the router. You're working through the USB adapter to the same router. You can see each other, but you can't get out to the internet. Did I read that right?

If that's the case, you'll need to configure DHCP on your computer and set the router up as gateway. Control Panel-->network settings / right-click-->properties / TCP/IP--> properties / make sure the "obtain IP address automatically" box is checked.

Pan, I'm assuming the wireless USB adapter (linksys -g wusb54gc) is installed on her system and provides the connection we see between her system and the router/Internet?

So you want to use Internet Connection Sharing to give you access to her Internet connection? It can work but, in geek-speak, ICS sucks. The most obvious disadvantage is that her system will need to be running for yours to get out. You'll also affect each others' performance. Eww. ICS is more appropriate for sharing dial-up connections.

Since you already own the router and your system has an Ethernet interface, you'd do better to get an Ethernet cable or another wireless adapter and connect your system directly to the Linksys.

I'm connected to the router, that is connected to her computer

SBC feeds into the router we have a hardline from the router into her puter, and in my puter we have the USB wireless stick that connects us.

I'm not really connected to her computer except wirelessly through the router and USB pickup.

No the router is on her puter the USB stick is on mine.

Now did I run the USB reciever program through her puter? No, I didn't know I needed to. I basicly loaded the router into hers and the USB into mine, I thought that was all I needed to do.

The big reason we need the internet connection is for my classes (U of A is moving a lot of classes to the web esp. the addictions courses.)

I thought the USB stick was how my compter picked up the signal from the router and transfered the data into my puter.

This was what Best Buy told me was the best way to share an internet connection without having to have new lines and hardwires installed and running throughout the house (which LS would frown upon.)

Sorry, you caught me in the middle of an edit... I see.

The USB dongle is how your computer is picking up the signal and transferring information. That last bit you directed at Cyn sounded like you were physically trying to connect through her computer and she had the wireless USB adapter. We (well, I...anyway) were a little confused.

I don't think her connection matters much other than that it is connected. If the wireless adapter is on your computer and your computer isn't connecting while others are then the problem lies with your computer, right?

The fact that your connecting to her computer from yours seems to me a good indicator that the wireless is working, at the very least.

Re-read my first post and change the settings. If it works, great. If it doesn't, ipconfig -all and post the results.

Sorry, barely waking up.

First, you'll both be "on the router." (or that's the goal) The fact you inserted an "install cd" in hers to help configure the router doesn't change the fact it's self-sufficient. Those install CD's and "insert cd first" stickers over the ports usually confuse people more than help.

Next, the ipconfig information you listed for her system shows only the one connection. It's wireless and apparently talking to the router. There's no sign of a separate hardwire Ethernet connection that you just mentioned. Did you use "ipconfig -all"? What if you remove her cable? Is she still on the net?

That, combined with your mention of "We have great connection between the puters, the problem is mine won't get internet" has me scratching my head. What do you mean by a great connection?

What exactly is working between the systems? Yours isn't picking up a valid address. Are you sure your system is trying to connect to _your_ router? (What's your SSID?) Did you make sure to duplicate the settings you used for her wireless?

It worked I now have internet capabilities through the router but it is saying there is no connection....

It renewed my IP address and showed a bunch of popup flashes that looked like it was loading things in.

Just control panel--> Network connections to bring up a box with all the viable connections on the computer and see if your wireless icon is there.

I know this is probably either a "You dumbass duh...." or a "Not really but show how computer dumb you are." type question.

I have done everything suggested in this thread and I have even done linksys help and I still get "cable not connected"..... could it be I need to load SBC into my computer? (I haven't done that and perhaps that is what is missing.) You know the disk the IP gives you so your computer can read their modem and such.

My rationale is this, I'm hooked up but now my computer doesn't know what it is reading as far as the internet. Or does the router take care of that?

do you have a standard ethernet jack on the back of your desktop as well as a wifi USB? my assumption is that you do...

yes I have the jack but nothing in it

and that's what is producing the error: Cable Not Connected, because it doesn't detect one so it tells you that one isn't there.

My laptop says that all the time when connected via WiFi in the house, but when I go to a hotel with a wired connection or connect to the wire at home, it stops.

You can disable that network device since you don't use it.

Wait a minute... Are you talking about the little icons down by the clock on the taskbar?

If you right-click the icon for the actual connection you can uncheck those two boxes at the bottom, which will lose the icon on the desktop and stop it from notifying you when something is wrong.

You can just reverse it and check those same two boxes on the wireless connection to get it to show up on the taskbar.

the wifi works to link her puter but not the net.... hope this works

what happened to the internet connection? didn't you have one when you posted this?

Her computer does mine doesn't.... that's the problem I'm trying to fix getting my computer online through the router

okay you're going to have to be much clearer than because I originally stopped posting in this thread for that very reason that it appeared that your computer was able to get on finally.

Your computer is not getting DHCP nor is it getting routing information from the router.

Let's remove her computer from the discussion since it does not add anything but confusion.

Have you tried either of these fixes on your desktop? You will be selecting the LAN connection for your Wireless USB device not the Intel device in the picture.

Note your IP address cannot be the same as hers so it needs to be 192.168.1.102

Don't know if it is too late to reply to this but could the problem be that you haven't setup the router properly for more than one user?

If you login to the router using 192.168.1.1, what is the number listed besides "Number of Address"

We got it Sat. I paid someone to do it. I just had security set at differing levels and was entering the wrong things in the wrong places.

Another issue was the router was too close to her machine and under a desk and unable to transmit or recieve a good signal. Now the signal runs 100% and is good to go.
