Limited or No connectivity problem
 

In the past week, its been really hard to get my internet working. We have Comcast Cable modem and a linksys router going to three computers. We've had this setup for over a year and had no problems. Now, every time i go to get on the internet, i have limited or no connectivity. And it seems to be a problem with all three computers. It seems that if i plug one computer inot the router i can get it to work. has anyone ever heard of anything like this. Another thing, it seemed to start after a week of having Zonelabs on my pc. Ive since uninstalled it.

1) restart both your router and your modem. Unplug both, leave for 30 seconds, then plug 'em back in.

2) go to a command prompt and type "ipconfig/release" and then type "ipconfig/renew"

3) reinstall zonealarm (you NEED a firewall. Trust me) but make sure you configure it to recognize your network as friendly. Find the ip of your network (look at your network adapter's ip when you do the ipconfig/renew step and take the first 3 sections - i.e. if your adapter is 192.168.2.14, take 192.168.2). Enter it as a trusted ip range of, in our example, 192.168.2.1 to 192.168.2.255

Then enter it as a trusted subnet (192.168.2.1 (again replace this with your network's specifics), subnet 255.255.255.0 (do not replace this - enter this exactly as it's written here)) because sometimes Zonealarm gets pissy if you don't have both of these configured.

If you're still having difficulties run a trace to several different sites, and go to dslreports.com and run their tweak tester.

I cant get the ipconfig/release to work on my laptop. I was able to do it on a desktop connected to the router. Is there something that would be stopping this proecdure on the laptop.

We have this problem come and go. Can you explain what's happening in layman's terms?

Zonelabs is messing up you IP configuration.........I think.

Problem: I have a router with two pc's and a mac connected. The router will only allow one computer to be connected and get internet at a time. Once we get one pc going, we try to plug in the other and all connections stop. I think the problem started with the installation of Zonelabs on my pc. I uninstalled it and have no intention of reinstalling it. Im happy with Norton and XP firewall.

does ur linksys router have a built in firewall?? is it wired or wireless?

also have you contacted linksys about this, their maybe some deep within the settings that they maybe able to setup for you.

Which router model? Which port is the cable modem plugged into? Which ports are the computers using? (many have ports 1-4 plus an uplink port, plus wireless)

Are you using static addressing or DHCP? Have you checked to make sure each system is using a unique IP address? (Start->Run...-> type "cmd", then type "ipconfig")

During router setup, did you enable a DMZ? Any other customizations or restrictions you can remember?

Have you tried anything to correct the problem like resetting the router, etc?

Which Norton are you using? Just antivirus or...? Norton Internet security has its own firewall. You would not want both Internet Security and ZoneAlarm installed or they'd fight for control. XP's Firewall is fairly useless but the other products know how to work around it.

Just a couple thoughts. There isn't enough yet to explain the problem.

to answer cyrnel:

model number is BEFSR41 ver. 4, wired, the modem is plugged into whatever the input jack is. Its not in the uplink port. The computers are in the 1-4 slots.

I'll have to check if all pc's are using their own IP.

did not do any customization.

already tried just resetting.

If you are running XP SP2. Do you have the network set to dsiplay if limited or no connectivity? If so take the check mark out and restart.

My friend has the same problem too. So... I surfed the net on my PC to see what I can do.

First thing I found watch a patch, a fix, an update, whatever.. for XP SP2 that would fix this known *error* (or bug - whatever the term). Installed it on her pc, no go.

Okay, then Command Prompt, netsh winsock reset. Success, resetted. Reboot PC, and major shit kicks in, I am disconnected totally from the PC to the modem. So I thought the LAN card is fried. Bought a new one and it doesn't seem to work.

Now there's nothing I can do to make the modem detectable by the computer. I even tried the on board LAN. Sadly to no avail. Should I format the computer? It practically has nothing on it.

By the way, is this due to spyware?

it may be too late, but i had a similar experience with my linksys router. I had given it up for lost. But in a last ditch effort to save it I flashed the BIOS with the most current version offered by Linksys, and reset to defaults and it's been working great since.
