Bob Stoops = jackass

It was enough that OU's head coach got busted trying to run up the score in the Nebraska game--throwing into the endzone with a minute left in the 4th quarter on 4th down when they were already up 30-0, but then Nebraska came back and kicked a field goal as the clock ran out to make it 30-3. He even admitted that he was trying to run up the score b/c he was concerned about the BCS standings.

But then, 2 days later, he says this:

http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=1924527

Quote:

NORMAN, Okla. -- Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops said Tuesday college football poll voters should be aware that ESPN has a contract with the Southeastern Conference when they consider the cable sports network's analysis that Auburn should be the nation's No. 2 team and not Oklahoma.
Stoops mentioned ESPN's contract with the SEC during his weekly news conference, but stopped short of accusing the network of bias.
"I'm not saying that," Stoops said. "I'm saying I'm aware of what their contracts are with. Whether people are directed in certain ways, I'm not going to say that. I think all the people ought to be aware who their contracts are with and what some of their agendas may be."
Stoops would not say whether he thought ESPN altered its analysis to favor SEC teams, such as Auburn.
"That would be for everyone else to comment on, not me. I don't think that's appropriate," Stoops said. "I just understand TV and what happens with programs. Ratings matter. I don't know what to say about it."
Josh Krulewitz, a spokesman for ESPN, said the network's rights holders understand that ESPN will not compromise journalistic integrity because of business arrangements. He said the company's business operations and news operations are separated like "church and state."
"The direction we provide our commentators is to be fair, to be objective and to give their opinions," Krulewitz said.
Auburn, which had trailed Oklahoma in the AP media poll all season, moved even with the Sooners this week following a 24-6 win over Georgia, which had been No. 8. Oklahoma beat unranked Nebraska 30-3.
Oklahoma maintained its No. 2 spot in the coaches poll, although its lead was cut to two points over Auburn.
Asked whether he thought ESPN had an impact on poll voters, Stoops said, "It probably impacts some people."
"Surely, AP or the coaches are all aware everybody has agendas," he continued. "Anybody who's on TV has one. You know, that's viewership and ratings and those kinds of things. The closer it becomes, the better for them.
"I think it's fair to say, too, they have a contract with the SEC. I'm fully aware of that. I can't be the only one who recognizes that. It's impossible to remove agendas. They have producers and ratings. I don't know what impact they have, but I'm sure they have some."
ESPN has agreements with the SEC to televise football and men's and women's basketball. The network also televises Big 12 men's and women's basketball.
Big 12 football is televised on ABC, a sister network of ESPN under the Disney umbrella, as well as Fox Sports Net and Turner Broadcast Station.
Stoops also said he agreed with Auburn coach Tommy Tuberville's questioning of why Southern California, which is No. 1 in both polls and in the Bowl Championship Series rankings, was exempted from discussions of who belongs in the top two BCS spots, which decide who will play for the national title.
"That's fair," Stoops said. "I would agree with coach Tuberville there, too. Their schedule strength, who they've beaten away from home and ranked teams all should be scrutinized compared to what everyone else is doing."
Stoops said it was possible that USC was still benefiting from its selection as preseason No. 1. USC, Oklahoma and Auburn are each 10-0.
"There's some people that are up there that have just stayed because they started there," Stoops said. "I would think that would be a great idea to start it once everybody's played four or five games."
However, Stoops said he didn't think the Trojans were getting a "free pass."
"I don't think any of us are," he said. "You still have to play and win. There are no free passes out there. But, you know, the discussion seems to center around us and Auburn and they're left out of that discussion."
How ridiculous--ABC shows all of Oklahoma's games, and he thinks its sister network is biased when CBS is contracted to get its first pick for an SEC game on Saturdays at 2:30. So ESPN's night game isn't even the best SEC game of the week. What's up with this guy? Why is he so concerned about the polls? If he thinks he's got one of the top two teams, why would he act like such a fool?

warrrreagl 11-18-2004 06:39 AM

He's stuck.

Oklahoma had their chance to beat down an SEC opponent in a BCS game last year, and LSU cleaned their clocks. Now, he's a little late getting into the BCS lobbying game while Tommy Tuberville has been letting his Auburn team do the campaigning for him. The result is that Auburn is the media darling and Stoops has no control over the situation. If Oklahoma puts up 40 points on hapless Baylor, it will offend a lot of voters (writers and coaches), but if Auburn puts up 40 points on Alabama, it will be viewed as a strong game against an archrival.

Wouldn't you love to see Notre Dame upset Southern Cal, setting up Oklahoma's second SEC BCS bitch-slap in a row (assuming they win out of course)?

stevo 11-18-2004 09:27 AM

I'd love to see Oklahoma get bitch-slapped this year. Unfortunately, I'm afraid, we won't see OU play Auburn this year, but at least we'll see USC run all over them.

Harry Cox 11-18-2004 04:52 PM

If all 3 win out, Auburn will jump OU to play USC in the Orange Bowl. Stoops and company will be left crying in their beer. (By the way, USC would light up that Zero U secondary like a Christmas tree.)

stevo 11-18-2004 06:27 PM

Ha Ha Ha. Zero U. I hate Oklahoma.

LIMilf 11-18-2004 09:30 PM

I dont know what crack this guy is smoking? First of all the Big 12 is weak this year. Second, I didnt even know the SEC had a contract with ESPN, I always see them on CBS anyways. Maybe somebody should tell this guy that he was lucky to be in the title game last year.

Of course all of this would be fixed with a playoff system.

It's the same crack that Mark Mangino passed around. He picked it up from Oliver Stone's house.

i'm not familiar enough w/all the legal contracts to comment... but i do like coach stoops' point about no one talking about USC's legitimacy. they started off at #1 and haven't received much scrutiny throughout the course of the season.

also, oklahoma clearly has the upperhand in strength-of-schedule.
http://teamrankings.com/ncf/27powerratings.php3

OU and USC are close (58 and 59 respectively) while auburn has one of the weakest schedules in the nation (114th).

Last year's Sugar Bowl score was 21-14. I'm not quite sure why anyone would consider that a clock cleaning. I mean, it was a national title game decided by a friggin touchdown... how much closer would you expect #1 & 2 to play eachother?

For most people (AP writers and coaches included) it all boils down to team preference with a thin pretense of objective analysis. Thats ok though, that's part of what makes college football so exciting.

stevo 11-20-2004 11:33 AM

I questioned USC's legitimacy earlier in the season, but after seeing that friggin running back, whatever team he's on should be ranked #1. Other than that, lets see the shit hit the fan when FSU gets to a BCS game over Miami. But we'll discuss that in a new thread when the time is right.

dy156 11-20-2004 12:36 PM

Just for the record, Baylor is ranked ahead of Mississippi, Mississippi State, and Kentucky on collegebcs.com. Alabama is ranked 53, behind such powers as Memphis, Northwestern, Southern Miss, and BYU. Subjectively, though, a victory over Alabama seems far greater than a similar victory over "hapless" Baylor.

Also, take a look at the strength of schedule-
OU is #9; Auburn is #70. The difference between this ranking and the strength of schedule posted by irateplatypus above is due to the fact that officially, the Citadel game doesn't count against Auburn.

cementor 11-20-2004 01:48 PM

Alright kids! I'm an OU alum. We were lucky or whatever else you want to call it to end up in the Sugar Bowl (I would ave put USC inmyself). Losing by a touchdown ain't getting "bitch slapped". As I recall (I was there)the second half the Sooners had the Tigers on the ropes and only an over thrown pass from +/- the 10 yard line kept the game out of overtime. Giving the Tigers their due, they were very good and deserving Co-Nat'l Champs.

On to Auburn: Strength of schedule counts, to date Auburns' aint so hot, though it could get better or could end this debate, as early as today ( Auburn 0, Ala 6 in the 2nd Qtr). They have played 4 teams at .500+ and 3 in the polls

OU won 4 games against ranked opponents on the road and won 7 games against .500 + teams. USC has 5 teams above .500 , and 3 ranked, but won 2 games against sub .500 teams on the road, by single digit margins and was never questioned, nor did they lose any ground, which OU did while beating ranked opposition on th road. I find this a little difficult to stomach. USC has beaten 4 teams with records better than .500 one of which is UCLA who OK State pounded at UCLA.

I think it is obvious that depending on who you root for a case can be made for your preference in pairings. Look at he defensive team stats if you like USC and AU as your pairing.

One other minor issue. If a number 1 team is immune to being moved down, because they don't lose, why is it so much easier to do so with a Number 2 in the same situation. We (OU) have had the target on our back all season and have gotten the job done. Auburn reminds me of the Sooners in 2000. We started about the same place in the polls 17th and had to have help to get to the title game. Auburn needs to have USC or OU stumble to get their shot.

If the Sooners don't end up in the Orange Bowl I will be dissappointed, but I won't be squalling that we were robbed. All these teams and conferences agreed to the BCS (which I don't care much for) so however it shakes out will be OK. I think OU would and will beat whoever they play in a bowl game, barring some bizarre rash of injuries. The polls are supposed to be estimations of this years performance without reference to last year. I believe USC is getting sympathy consideration because they got "screwed" last year. I think they are likely a close 3rd, but shake 'em all up in a sack and their ain't much difference. OU may be being punished by some pollsters after last years finish.

And Auburn is now the poster child for that scenario; they just beat their arch-rival and DROPPED a spot in the AP poll.

Go Notre Dame!!!!!

from a Texas perspective...
good news: OU has approximately 20 seniors (of which, 14 are starters).
bad news: Peterson will be a Sooner for at least two more years!

Yeah, I'm excited about another 3 years of OU only getting up to play us then strolling by all the other teams. Plus the BCS screwing us over, again. I love the BCS

Andrew 11-24-2004 02:13 PM

Heh. I'd love to have Stoops coaching at Michigan. I could take a little whining for how much he wins.
