ALL SOSA"S BAT CORK FREE
Wednesday, June 4
Seventy-six Sosa bats found to be clean -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ESPN.com news services Sammy Sosa's 76 bats confiscated by baseball officials showed no signs of cork in X-rays taken the day after he was ejected for using an illegal bat in a game. We all know that Sammy Sosa used a corked bat in the first inning of Tuesday night's Cubs-Devil Rays game. Officials took all of Sosa's bats after the incident, and until that investigation is completed, I'll reserve my judgment. If it turns out that Sosa has a number of corked bats, then I'll have a different opinion than I have now. If he has only one or two, he could have made a mistake. This could have been an accident, because all bats, corked or not, look alike. But if lots of his bats are corked, that's a different story. So stay tuned. The bats were taken from the Chicago Cubs' locker room during the game against the Tampa Bay Devil Rays on Tuesday night. Cork was found in Sosa's bat when it shattered after he grounded out in the first inning of the Cubs' 3-2 victory. "The bats were clean and had no foreign substances in them,'' said Sandy Alderson, executive vice president of baseball operations in the commissioner's office. "That is consistent with Sammy's explanation of the incident last night.'' |

Pfft
If I was using a corked bat in a game, I wouldn't have any corked back-up's either. Then I could easily plead the same thing Sosa did. |

Oh well, I guess I should never underestimate the insatiable desire of most people to see others screw up. |
he has broken a shitload of bats before, all cork-free.
come on, this is an accident. |
man if his bats are illegal maybe he is too
Ouch i only say this because i am a Redbirds fan |
I only got to see one replay on the news of when he actually split his bat. How did Sosa look when his bat cracked? If that happened to me, I'd have a look of "Oh shit..., I hope no one notices" on my face. That kind of reaction would be hard to mask even if you prepared a lot for it. Just my two cents...

I'm sure it was just a mistake...Sammy's one of the good guys. I hope this blows over.
Now if it had been Bonds...I would have bashed him first... |
why even have a corked one just incase this kind of thing might happen!

As the explanation went the corked bat was for batting practice. That way he was able to put on a bigger show in batting practive for the fans. I suppose we will never know the truth, but it's a pretty good explanation, and you know what I WANT to believe it...

The bat in question was a plant by the 'Office of Homeland Security' in an attemot to make it appear the al Quida was trying to destroy America's past time.

here's my only problem with this. I've played baseball ever since I could walk. When I go to bat I know exactly which bat I have in my hand. The same goes for MLB players. They know what bat they have in their hand. having a corked bat in the rack during game time doesn't really make sense does it. He just came of the d/l he wasn't doing great and now this. Just sounds a little funny. Sure his other bats were clean but he didn't use the clean ones. He used the corked one. I'm not saying it couldn't be a mistake but it sounds like there's more to it than I just picked up the wrong bat.

I would think the corked bat has some kind of prominent markings on it to avoid this kind of a problem. I can't believe he would be holding and swinging this bat in the on deck circle for 5 minutes or so without noticing...

Saw an interview with Ernie Harwell...he's seen more ball games than any living soul. He has doubts about Sosa' story, and I tend to agree. The Cubs had over 2 hours to "clean up" Sosa's bat collection. And, besides, if it was a mistake, the batboys' head would be rolling on the clubhouse floor! He'd be the one taking the fall!
