Group which Includes the 'Carlyle Group' to buy Loews Multiplex Company
Anyone else hear anything on this?
Will this have any effect on Loews showing "Farenheit 9-11"? Were they showing it anyway? I have read articles about Hollywood being used to condition people to war and Administration friendly values..is this along those lines? Link Boston Group Led by Bain Capital Acquires Loews Cineplex for Just Under $2B By Naomi Grossman Last updated: June 23, 2004 01:49pm BOSTON-A corporation formed by Bain Capital, the Carlyle Group and Spectrum Equity Investors reached an agreement to acquire Loews Cineplex Entertainment Corp. and Grupo Cinemex from Onex Corp. and its partner, Oaktree Capital Management LLC for approximately $1.5 billion. The Toronto-based Onex and Oaktree will retain the Loews interest in Cineplex Galaxy, which operates the Loews theater business in Canada as well as Galaxy Entertainment. Loews is the third largest movie theater chain in the industry, with over 200 theaters and 2,200 screens worldwide. The assets being acquired include Loews' operations in the US, Grupo Cinemex, and its 50% interests in Megabox Cineplex of Korea and Yelmo Cineplex of Spain. "Loews Cineplex has been an excellent investment for Onex," says Anthony Munk, a managing director of Onex, which acquired the company out of bankruptcy. "Since acquiring it we have built it into a leading exhibitor." As part of the transformation of Loews, the company completed three acquisitions in the US, Mexico and Korea. They also merged Loews' Canadian assets with Galaxy Entertainment as part of an income trust public offering. John Connaughton, a managing director at Bain Capital, notes that the chain has a high quality circuit that is focused in the top 10 US markets and key international locations. "Thanks in part to an existing theater portfolio that has been recently upgraded, Loews is well-positioned to capitalize on the industry's steady growth prospects," he adds. "The investor group will work closely with the talented management team to grow the business." Credit Suisse First Boston LLC and Citigroup Global Markets acted as financial advisors to Loews Cineplex in connection with this transaction. It is currently expected that the sale, which is subject to customary regulatory approvals, will close during the third quarter. Bain Capital is a locally based global private investment firm with more than $20 billion in assets under management. The Carlyle Group is a private equity firm with more than $18 billion under management. Spectrum Equity Investors is a locally based private equity firm with over $3 billion under management. This past March, Madison Dearborn Partners Inc. acquired Cinemark Inc., another leading motion picture exhibitor, for $1.5 billion. |
Well the right wing are now trying to control what we see in movie theatres..... ain't that special.
The studios have to produce movies that theatre chains will buy. If the owners of those chains are all Right Winged zealous nutcases then guess what the movies will be. It's bad enough they control radio with Clear Channel. Now we can all know the truth behind Reagan's great plan of deregulating everything. Aw well there's always video. Until the right buys the video chains like Blockbuster from Viacom or Netflix. |
Perhaps there needs to be a special thread in the Tilted Paranoia area for Partisan Conspiracy Theories. Jeesh.

Especially now, when we are at war and the economy for the workers is in the shitter and we are finding out on a daily basis how corrupt our government is. Could it be that they are now trying to control the media? Just a thought. Perhaps it is paranoia, but that doesn't mean I'm wrong. The truer question would be: why are there so many truly disenfranchised and not trusting of the government and the Bushes? |
Really, I must have missed the paragraph in there where it discusses right-wing zelous nutcases...

What you posted above was definetly a prompt for bickering. |

I won't even go into the economy argument since it's growing at a fierce pace with increasing jobs, low interest rates, little inflation, etc, etc, etc. As far as the government corruption, I will just echo the argument around the wmds "show me the evidence". Quote:

OneTime, I love ya man, but the economy is still bad, (which yeah when the government adds in fast food to manufacturing jobs there will seem to be an increase. Plus, when we are losing $40,000 jobs and getting $20,000 jobs back, the jobs are out there but the people needing them are taking serious paycuts, people worked at Hoover for 20 years made a decent living and now they are working at Speedways and jobs that pay $7 maybe. AND that icludes white collar mid-management (we won't get into what TimKen and Rubbermaid are going to add to the economy once they close down as they reported they are going to.
As for corruption, we see more and more nasty stuff on Bush everyday. The papers FROM the WH itself talking about how far they can go and whether war crimes would be considered. If they were legit, they would never even have war crimes questions, and that's just one thing. No, they need Limbaugh and Fox News and as much right winged leverage as they can get, because the media is not that liberal, it is far less liberal than say in the 80's. If anything they are centrists at best. Granted they don't spin like Limbaugh, Beck or Dredge (and I didn't spell his name wrong) who are so far right the media can't be compared to them. By buying up all the theatres and trying that little hostile takeover at Disney, and fining Viacom out of business they see they will be able to control the media and Limbaugh will appear to be center. When that happens this country is sadly doomed. |

As far as the right wing conpiracy theories around taking over the media, I'll just pass on the whole conversation and reiterate my suggestion that it is more at place in tilted paranoia. |
