Mexico
I don’t know much about Mexico I will admit. Other than the 2 weeks my wife and I spent in Cancun basking in the sun drinking out of hollowed out pineapples. Mmmmm pineapples…. I would like to discuss why the US has not just taken in Mexico as the 51st state. This would help the people of Mexico by getting rid of their corrupt government and police force, provide more work for them here in the US, it would get rid of the illegal immigrant from Mexico, would let us better control illegal contraband coming from Mexico, and lots of other things. What do you guys think? Has this been talked about before? If so what was our governments stance? Do you think Mexico would be for or against a “merger”?
Thanks,

nope...no way.
people are not going to give up their culture, ideas, laws etc... to be part of US. their self-identity is as mexico, not US.

No offense Darkeryet, but it is clear that you know little about Mexico. It is a soveriegn nation, with its own history, culture and pride. Most Mexicans are happy being Mexican and have nationalistic feelings just like most U.S. citizens. Yes, their economy is not the strongest and they are struggling to clean up their government and law enforcement, but I would imagine that a vast majority would rather not become part of the United States. I have spent a fair amount of time in Mexico and know a number of Mexican families and while they generally like Americans they dislike to patronizing attitude America has towards Mexico.
On the flip side, I really do not think that the U.S. would want to take Mexico at the 51st state. It is a large, poor, Spanish-speaking nation that would take trillions of dollars to bring up to U.S. standards. Area: 1,972,550 sq km - slightly less than three times the size of Texas! Population: 100,294,036 (July 1999 est.) compared to the U.S. population of 278,058,881 (July 2001 est.). That would increase the U.S. population by approximately 36%! Absorbing Mexico would put an enormous strain on the U.S. economy and would reshape American/world politcs. Edit: I got my facts from Geographic.org: http://www.geographic.org/countries/

Yes, like I said I do not know much about Mexico. I do think though that we could turn their agriculture and tourism industries into something profitable to the US.
I don't like to talk about culture much because I do not think the name of your country determines your culture. Changing Mexico to a united state would not change the culture of Mexico. I think it would be very beneficial to them. I think it would be hard on the US at first but I think things would equal out over time. Well, thank you for the comments. I was trying to start a new debate that didn't have anything to do with liberal or conservative politics but it turns out to be not much to discuss. I will keep trying. Thanks,

There is nothing wrong with your thinking. I'm not sure it would solve all of their problems - for everyone solved another might be created. No one can deny that Mexico has problems. Years of corrupt government - justice for sale, etc. has cause a distrust of all government, theirs and ours. The U.S. does not offer the easy road to success that they imagine when they leave Mexico for the U.S. Those that make it into the states are really used - not so much by Anglos but by Mexican-Americans. Making them Americans (excuse me, U.S. citizens) would not autimatically better their position. Mexico is rich in natural resources - most undeveloped and many lost because of either government corruption or mismangement. A change in government - adaequate enough to bring about a chage of attitude in Mexico, is probably a better answer to their problems.

Ah good old manifest-destiny.
If you want to do something, create a world currency, or at least a common currency for North America to compete with the EURO. A world currency would be better though. No more pounds, American dollars, or Euros. I say we call them donairos |

I don't think it's a good idea at all, it would be disastrous to the economy of both nations. Like it or not, the U.S. economy depends on illegal aliens being migrant farm workers. Mexicos economy depends on the lower wages paid there so that companies can produce goods at a lower cost for export. Remove those two things, and both countries are in trouble.
