CIA Wants to Get Heavy on Administration
 

So, the CIA has asked the Justice Department to investigate who in the administration leaked information about an undercover agent to the press.

For those of you who don't remember, the agent's husband was the one who investigated the claims Iraq had obtained uranium; when his report came back stating this was untrue, the administration lied and claimed they had.

When it eventually came out that the story had been a lie, it was claimed by conservative columnist Robert Novak that an adminstration official had been running around telling all and sundry the details of the CIA agent as revenge.

Of course, there's fat chance that the Ashcroft Justice Department will actually do anything about it, but it's amazing what lengths it appears the present US administration will go to (acts of treason) to "get" anyone on their bad sides.

I bet this administration has an "enemies list" and y'know as dodgy as Nixon was at least he wrote his own list - Bush probably doesn't know half the names on the list and Rove isn't willing to explain them.

Well, actually, I just wrote a rather lengthy post about this on my own site, and I am happy to see the event mentioned here....

In all honesty, Novak is not really the person to blame in this incident. Don't get me wrong, I can't stand the guy for a number of personal reasons, and I think it was completely wrong that he put her name in the article months ago. However, based upon the actual text of the Intelligence Identity Protection Act, the blame goes to the person who had access to the classified information. While I agree that the person responsible should be taken from the White House in a burlap bag and pulled down Pennsylvania Avenue tied to the bumper of Wilson's car, to put the blame on Novak is essentially shooting the messenger.

If anybody wants to know the rest of what I thought on this matter, PM me and I will send you a link to the post on my site. I would post it here, but got in trouble once before for what was considered "plugging."

Serious, either way, but in my own estimation, one is worth a very long prison sentence...whereas the other is worthy of public execution. I really would like to know which.

Ok he is changing his story now that the heat is on. But you know what? He still aserts that two senior admin officials TOLD him about it. Just releasing the name breaks treason laws. So the situation hasn't changed, there is just a spin on it now.

If it all pans out and this story is true, the person/people involved should be prosecuted to fullest extent of the law. It is disgusting and politics at its worst.

Giving up an agent because you don't like the truth being told you by the agent's husband should result in jail time for someone.

One claim I've seen circulating puts the death toll of CIA "assets" (informants and the like, I assume) at 70; I haven't been able to find a reliable source for this.

It's pretty believable, though. If you were in the business of trading nuke secrets under the table you'd be checking your people for contact with this woman and likely killing them.

I doubt Bush will be as keen to execute those responsible as he was to authorise executing po' folks when he was the Govenor of Texas...

I really don't understand why Novak isn't getting any flak for this. He isn't free of responsibility for putting CIA operatives in danger, since he is the one that exposed them, heh. He should lose his job at the very least.

He should lose his job, but freedom of speech should protect him (and rightly so) The blame lies with those who gave him the information, Novak signed no non-disclosure documents. He is morally bankrupt but not a criminal.

IMPORTANT FOLLOW-UP MESSAGE FROM COUNSEL'S OFFICE

This communication is a follow-up to the directive I sent you this morning regarding the preservation of certain materials in the possession of the White House, its staff, or its employees.

Pursuant to a request from the Department of Justice, I am instructing you to preserve and maintain the following:

"[F]or the time period February 1, 2002 to the present, all documents, including without limitation all electronic records, telephone records of any kind (including but not limited to any records that memorialize telephone calls having been made), correspondence, computer records, storage devices, notes, memoranda, and diary and calendar entries, that relate in any way to:

1. Former U.S. Ambassador Joseph C. Wilson, his trip to Niger in February 2002, and/or his wife's purported relationship with the Central Intelligence Agency;

2. Contacts with any member or representative of the news media about Joseph C. Wilson, his trip to Niger in February 2002, and/or his wife's purported relationship with the Central Intelligence Agency; and

3. Contacts with reporters Knut Royce, Timothy M. Phelps, or Robert D. Novak, or any individual(s) acting directly or indirectly, on behalf of these reporters."

You must preserve all documents relating, in any way, directly or indirectly, to these subjects, even if there would be a question whether the document would be a presidential or federal record or even if its destruction might otherwise be permitted.

Knut Royce and Timothy Phelps of Newsday have done some of the best reporting of anyone in town on the whole issue of Iraq, politicized intelligence and the Joe Wilson matter. They've clearly got some awfully good and pretty generous sources. What are their names doing in this memo?

They reported early on Novak's original column. But why that should put them in the mix here isn't immediately clear.

Actually, a British journalist here in the states today filed a report that indicates that White House political guru Karl Rove is the source of the leaks.

Rove, it should be noted, is the subject of the book "Bush's Brain." He is an accomplished political operator who has been quoted as having one of the Tammany Hall bosses as who he wanted to grow up to be. Rove is widely credited for placing George W. Bush in a position to win the 2000 election, and is generally considered to be the eminence grise behind the current administration. He does, however, have a prior history of leaking information in the service of the Republican Party. He was fired from George H.W. Bush's presidential campaign in 1992 for leaking information to a reporter. That reporter, it should be noted, was Robert Novak. Coincidence? Possibly. Joseph Wilson, husband to the recently outed Valerie Plame also fingered Rove in a July appearance in Seattle.

So what happens to George W. Bush if and when Karl Rove is frogmarched out of the White House in handcuffs?

Gillespie is not a very smart guy -- he says a lot of incredibly stupid things, it seems.

Are you kidding? With the Bush's Justice Department doing the so-called investigation, this case is as good as closed, and the "liberal" media will forget about this story in 2 weeks tops. I mean, the leak happened over 4 months ago, this isn't exactly breaking news. The media is so positively whipped by the Bush administration, they don't dare do anything but report what his PR people tell them to. The message is clear: cross us and you will pay with your reputation and career.

Bush's goons are just getting warmed up. Things are going to get really dirty in 2004.

Do you watch anything BUT Fox News? On NBC, CBS, ABC, and local Fox stations I've heard very close to what would amount to suggestions that Bush himself is involved in the leak. I'm not sure where you get your "news", but what you see is vastly different than what I see.

Every article in the mainstream newspapers is reporting it, obviously (cough, 4 months after it happend). But the spin is the same. "Bush is fully cooperating." Of course he is, John Ashcroft is conducting the "investigation." The whole thing is a farce.

If I missed an article that is suggesting Bush himself is responsible for the leaks, please, don't hesitate to point it out to me.

Yeah. Remember that guy they were going to string up, what was his name, Ken Lay? Hey wasn't going to get any preferential treatment from his buddy George. Ol' Kenny-boy was going to get it good and hard.

Ken Lay and Karl Rove are worlds apart.

There was a good interview on Boston's Talking Point where Joseph Wilson (Former Bush Sr. and Reagan diplomatic appointee) seems to contradict what Dick Cheney says. Things we know now like the fact that Iraq didn't seek enriched Uranium from Nigeria.

Cheney made the assertion that he got that information from a daily brief. This was the same information that Wilson was sent to Nigeria to investigate. Wilson said that he found no evidence that Iraq had attempted to buy enriched Uranium from Africa. Yet somehow his oral report either a) changed or b) ignored.

There are some in the media that want to paint Wilson as some sort of Democratic activist. Wilson himself discounts this as he was the US ambassador to Iraq during the first gulf war.
