Wow, I really thought this was cute...

OTTAWA, Canada (AP) -- Some of the first patients to smoke Canada's government-approved marijuana say it is "disgusting" and they want their money back.

Health Canada, the federal health department, started selling marijuana in July to bring relief to patients suffering from AIDS, cancer and other diseases. The move followed a court order that patients should not be forced to get their marijuana from drug dealers on the streets.

But some of the first to buy the government's marijuana say it is no good.

"It's totally unsuitable for human consumption," said Jim Wakeford, 58, an AIDS patient in Gibsons, British Columbia.

Wakeford and Barrie Dalley, a 52-year-old Toronto man who uses marijuana to combat the nausea associated with AIDS, are returning their 1-ounce (30-gram) bags, and Dalley is demanding his money back -- about C$150 ($110) plus taxes. Wakeford is returning his unpaid bill for two bags with a written complaint.

The marijuana is being grown for Health Canada deep underground in a vacant mine section in Flin Flon, Manitoba, by Prairie Plant Systems on a contract worth about C$5.75 million ($4.2 million).

Ten patients have registered with Health Canada to buy marijuana directly from the government to alleviate their medical symptoms. Another 39 applications are pending.

No patients have complained directly to Health Canada so far, spokeswoman Krista Apse said, and the department will not accept returns or provide refunds.

Meanwhile, Vancouver inaugurated North America's first government-authorized drug-injection site Monday. The controversial government-funded project will give users injection kits and allow them to shoot up under nurse supervision.

Drug users sometimes use dirty needles and water from puddles to shoot up. Now, addicts wanting to use the new facility will be ushered into a brightly lit room lined on one side by open, mirrored booths where they can inject drugs.

After finishing, they will be taken to a "chill-out room," where they can receive counseling and peer referrals.

The first part doesn't bother me so much, in fact I kinda got a kick out of it. What got me riled was the "government-authorized drug-injection site". I mean get serious this is condoning the use of a horrible and dangerous drug, hypocrisy aside, weed is not the same thing as heroin or even less addictive/dangerous injectables. I was wondering what others think of this?

For: legalization of drugs
Against: government-sponsored "shoot-up" sites

This is done for years now in the Netherlands as an experiment to see if drug addicts  are giving less annoyance if they don't have to steal to get money for drugs. Nobody can tell if it realy helps...

the marijuana and weed thing is new here, they've just started that. Health taxes are raised again this year...

Shoot-up sites doesn't mean free drugs or anything. Just less HIV.
As for encouragement; the pictures I've seen from shoot-up sites works pretty good to scare people away from heroin.

As for the pot in Canada; unless there was mold on it (which can happen to tobacco too if it isn't treated right), it's pretty ridiculous.

We have injecting room trials here in Sydney. They seem to be doing OK; no fatal overdoses, no aids, no hepatitis, thousand odd referrals to rehab services. The ambulance drivers seem to like it too; they don't have to risk their necks in some grotty back alley.

Don't know what's going on with that pot thing though.

ObieX 09-16-2003 08:59 AM

I will happily accept any unwanted weed.

seretogis 09-16-2003 10:54 AM

I would much rather that those who feel the need to inject themselves with puddle-water purge themselves from the species, than watch over them to make sure they're doing it right.

I suspect Canadians will benefit in terms of lower overall health costs by less people using puddle water to fill their syringes.

Furthermore, if someone wants to shoot drugs into his or her veins and doesn't bother anyone else while doing it, I don't really think my or seretogis' opinion of the behavior matters.

two pretty decent ideas...of coarse the Rx weed can't be too good, there would be too much demand from questionable users.

G13 man!!!

Well, I'd rather not legalize marijuana in the first place, but if that's what the citizens of Canada voted for, then they'll have to live with it. Such is the peril of democracy. Distributing needles I don't see as that much different than distributing condoms, though certainly I'd object to a government-authorized... condom-injection site?

Some good may come out of it after all, though. If we can work on rehabilitation (in the United States, roughly half of all teens and adolescents admitted for care due to substance abuse are admitted for marjiuana only) and ease them off of it, well, that's not so bad. It'd be a flytrap, so to speak. Or maybe the marijuana is so bad on purpose that they make even hardcore addicts swear off the stuff?

Last, anyone else find it hilariously ironic that even in marijuana production, the free market private sector delivers a cheaper and superior product than the government?

That's why I don't want the government to run anything!

Conclamo Ludus 09-16-2003 01:47 PM

What happends when people start sueing the government for not recognizing the health risks of smoking weed?:D

Just a thought, I'm sure it won't be long until someone tries to make the case.

2wolves 09-16-2003 05:25 PM

Whatever happened to brownies + ?

No smoking involved.

Duncan Hines would overtake General Motors and Halliburton.

Hehehehe. Word.

Hell, all "munchie" food would skyrocket.

filtherton 09-16-2003 08:54 PM

Apparently the dope also contains levels of arsenic deemed dangerous by Canadian government standards. Not that weed is the stuff of health nuts anyways, but why make folks with cancer huff arsenic?

Mojo_PeiPei 09-16-2003 09:35 PM

Yeah I don't get why people smoke it, isn't it more potent if you ingest it like 2wolves said? Or I hear that some guy invented some water soluble THC, wouldn't it produce the same effects?
