the entire 'veto' system is totally ridiculous. they should do away with that system and come up with something more fair.

I will go on record as saying though that the US' record of vetoing resolutions when it comes to Israel is disgusting. Some of those were good proposals.

Agreed. The veto system has been abused by everyone, and it obviously does not work. Perhaps some sort of vote representation based on GDP or population would be better, like the House of Represenatives.

Without the veto-system, the USA will definetely back out of the UN. That the UN exists does not change the thinking of governments.

If LBJ would not have gone into Vietnam, no American lives would have been lost either. It was just the fear for communism that caused LBJ to start a war in Vietnam. If America would not have started supplying the French (who were basically running South Vietnam then) with weapons etc. The French grew tired of the war and backed out. That is when the USA stepped in themselves.
The only thing that would have happened had the USA not infered is that the south also turned communist.

Just to remain a bit ontopic, how do Americans in general feel about the French and Vietnamese?
South Vietnam was way smaller, and it became communist anyways when the US left. It was 50 000 US lives and 2-3 million Vietnamese lives lost for no reason.

Most probably true. The veto system prevents the U.N. from being even slightly democratic. Votes don't matter if someone can veto any decision. The majority can want 1 thing, the minority can veto.

I agree, the UN has to change already. The common perception of the UN, rightly or wrongly, is that it is a haven for lazy good for nothing bureaucrats to sit around at some-one else's expense.

I say, can this veto crap altogether.

Some sort of world parliamentary system needs to be set up where resolutions are made and everyone votes on them just like they do at the country level.

A majority of say 60% should be needed to carry the day.

Fuck this veto shit, it gives too much power to the USA, France, Russia, China, Britain, etc. to implement their own will.
