photos A year's worth of people

I used to avoid portraiture. Over the past year, I've been working on it. Here are some selections taken chronologically over the last 12 months or so. I find I tend to do head shots.

What kind of lighting set up do you do to get the really great skin contrast in the B&W shots? (i.e. ISO, aperture, shutter, light source direction, type of light source, etc.)

I'll have to check. I'm not following any sort of standard routine.

That level of texture isn't really "real". There's some post processing to heighten it.

What's your typical camera/lens setup?

I used to use a 50mm f/1.8 primarily for portraits, but there are a couple up there using an 18-200mm zoom. The last couple are using an 80-200mm f/2.8 lens.

IMHO, the 50mm works fairly well. Dollar for dollar, it's still the best lens I have. The 80-200mm is better, but it's a LOT more expensive.

Camera is a Nikon D300.

I get where you're coming from. I use a Lumix DMC-GH1 and while the box lens is fairly impressive compared to most, I find myself usually resorting my my $100 Canon 50mm f/1.8. It produces astonishing results at used VCR prices.
