Old Cemeteries
A couple towns over from me there are 2 old cemeteries. One well maintained and the other not. Both date from the mid 1800's.
Family obelisk. All the names are carved on the side with smaller stones running parallel along the plot. http://i486.photobucket.com/albums/r...8/DSC_0002.jpg Polished granite. Must be a replacement stone as there are no others similar to this one. http://i486.photobucket.com/albums/r...8/DSC_0006.jpg Must have been some time since the grounds were maintained. http://i486.photobucket.com/albums/r...8/DSC_0007.jpg Slate headstone. Very hard to read even in person. I think the person died around 1845. http://i486.photobucket.com/albums/r...8/DSC_0010.jpg A few from the well kept one. http://i486.photobucket.com/albums/r...8/DSC_0012.jpg http://i486.photobucket.com/albums/r...8/DSC_0013.jpg http://i486.photobucket.com/albums/r...8/DSC_0021.jpg Oldest headstone I found in this one. Dates to 1772. http://i486.photobucket.com/albums/r...8/DSC_0022.jpg And a couple from a nearby field. Just to break up the ghoulishness... http://i486.photobucket.com/albums/r...8/DSC_0026.jpg http://i486.photobucket.com/albums/r...8/DSC_0028.jpg |
I am quite found of obelisks in any country, especially those within driving distance.
A question I've never heard remarked was why do some headstones appear tilted & off-kilter? |
Forgot to put this one in. Obelisk with the names on it.
http://i486.photobucket.com/albums/r...8/DSC_0001.jpg It looked like most of the off kilter ones were due to the ground settling beneath them. |
These photos are so beautiful. It makes me sad how dilapidated this crematory is though.

I don't find it ghoulish at all. There is so much history that can be found in a cemetery. These pictures are wonderful, they capture the beauty of the stone gardens so well.
In the Victorian era, there were no parks, people had picnics in cemeteries. |

Great shots, Fotzlid. Nice slice of local history found there. |
Virginia City Cemetery is one of my favorite shooting areas. There's something about tombstones that evoke emotion.

I enjoy spending time in cemeteries...I can't explain it, I just do. I don't find your shots ghoulish at all - quite the contrary, actually. Thanks for sharing!

I wonder who will take pictures of our graves. Hmm.
Your pictures make me think! |
This is a fitting thread for memorial day.

Or you can convert the cemetery into a park, like this:
North Sydney Council - St Thomas Rest Park I find older ones quite an interesting place for a walk through. I'm almost a little saddened by the fact angels and obelisks are being replaced by very simple headstones. |
Thanks everyone. I'm glad you liked the pictures.

Several of those are more than good enough to sell.
There are a lot of very talented people here. |
1772 and 1845 — very well done typography )

Way cool images. I've yet to visit an old cemetery like this and I really want to. There are a few around here but it's so ridiculous - they're on main roads, fenced off to the side by themselves. Being so close to traffic just drains the beauty out of them.

great pics. Here's a few I took last fall:
