I spent the day yesterday at Cajon Pass. We were invited by some rail enthusiasts. They can go on at length about the types and gross tonnage and speeds and horse power and any number of details. Me, I can tell you that some were orange and others were yellow.

The last one is a tilt-shift fake. On the that third one, it was set to bulb. The EXIF says +0.25, so I'm not sure what that means. Exposure was ten seconds or so, I think.

Thank you. Tilt-shift fakes almost always look like models or toys. It's a cool trick, I think.

Fantastic shots FnQ! My favourites are the motion blurs. You've also done a really nice job capturing the twilight. Excellent colour!

I too don't care a lick about model numbers and engine stats but I do love looking at trains.

And i am a little jealous. I like trains so much but here (Russia) is not allowed to take any pictures of them or railways without special permission considering them as military objects. So I'm a sort of afraid of doing that )

There's a process for doing this in photoshop. I'd have to go search for a link... or you can use this online editor.

Seems to work really well in more urban settings.

This one is a tilt-focus. Only it's back-tilted to put everything in focus. I use a 4X5 Calumet. This shot is a 10 second exposure at twilight.

Love the train pictures; my dad is a huge train buff, and fnaqzna, the Cajon Pass is on his list of places in the United States to go trainwatching. We've done a lot of trainwatching at various places around the West; unfortunately this was before the age of digital cameras, and certainly well before I had my own.

That tilt-shift fake shot threw me off for a moment, but I have worked on too many HO scale models to be fooled. It's a great picture, though.

Hopefully before too long I'll have my own train pictures to share.

Tilt shift, never heard of it. Looks cool.


People down here have an odd reaction to cameras as well. Most of it's just people not wanting to end up on the net somewhere. But there are military check points and using your camera can result in loosing your camera, or so I've been told.
