So cool but WHAT exactly is it?????????

when I was in the Navy I was the ships night baker and would go on deck to smoke. Normally it was so dark you couldn't see your hand in front of your face even with all the stars out..... but I can recall one night we were out around the Bermuda Triangle and I swore I saw a glow under the water. It wasn't like lights, it was a glow like glow in the dark stuff and went for as far as I could see.

It didn't like light the sky or illuminate anything which is weird.... but anyway here's an article that shows a satellite photo of it.... and finally I don't feel so nutty but now I wonder what is it?

Milky seas clarified
Christen Brownlee

For centuries, mariners have returned home with surreal tales of "milky seas": expanses of seawater filled with bioluminescent bacteria that glow an eerie white. Little is known about these elusive sea conditions, says Steven D. Miller of the Naval Research Laboratory in Monterey, Calif.

To learn more, he and his team scoured ship records for modern sightings. They found only one well-documented occurrence, off the Somali coast on Jan. 25, 1995. They also obtained images collected at the same time and location by the U.S. Defense Meteorological Satellite Program. These included first-ever photos of a milky sea, a Connecticut-size area of the glowing water. Satellites that spot such seas in the future may give shipboard researchers ample lead time to investigate the phenomenon in person

Just wondering why this is posted in paranoia.

But no worries, its just my glow-in-the-dark-peed-in-the-ocean moving through the world

I dunno about that shite, but here in Florida (Indian River to be exact) if you go boating at night you will see glow in the dark bacteria in the water.

It's really awesome to see. You can swirl your hand through the water and it will light up green. So awesome to go sailing at night and see a green wake behind your boat. Only seen it a few times though.

I think it might be the bioluminescence, but as pointed out, they normally need nearby activity to light up.

I shat myself once, swimming back to the beach at Catalina island.
Myself and a friend had anchored the boat about 50 yards offshore and were swimming back to the beach for the night where the rest of us were having a barbeque and a sleep-over.
I turned over to do backstroke and saw this 'thing' in the water behind me. I called out to my buddy who looked behind him too and he started panicing and swimming faster shouting that he had one following him too.

I almost lost it. I had shorts and dive fins on and it just kept pace with me. Then I realised that it only glowed with my kicks.

Had a good chuckle on the beach.

Because I find it hard to believe it's just bioluminscent bacteria and such as they claim. A small area yeah but an area the size of Connecticut?

And if it is bacteria as noted above it needs some form of stimulus, what in the Hell is out there the size of Connecticut to stimulate these, 3 nights in a row?

here's what the MSNBC site (a portion from the above link) said about it:

Quote:
"The circumstances under which milky seas form is almost entirely unknown," says Steven Miller, a Naval Research Laboratory scientist who led the space-based discovery. "Even the source for the light emission is under debate."

The leading idea
Scientists suspect bioluminescent bacteria are behind the phenomenon. Such creatures produce a continuous glow, in contrast to the brief, bright flashes of light produced by "dinoflagellate" bioluminescent organisms that are seen more commonly lighting up ship wakes and breaking waves.

"The problem with the bacteria hypothesis is that an extremely high concentration of bacteria must exist before they begin to produce light," Miller told LiveScience. "But what could possibly support the occurrence of such a large population?"

One idea, put forward by the lone research vessel to ever encounter a milky sea, is that the bacteria are not free-living, but instead are living off some local supporting "substrate."

"This previous excursion reported the presence of bioluminescent bacteria, which were found to be living in association with an algal bloom," Miller explained.

"So, our best working hypothesis is that we are witnessing bioluminescence produced by bacteria that are colonizing some kind of organic material present in the water," he said. "Satellite detection will hopefully allow us to target milky seas with properly equipped research vessels that will then be able to answer all these questions definitively."

The mysterious seas
The event occurred in 1995 and was finally analyzed and reported last week in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

The mystery highlights how little scientists know about the ocean. Milky seas appear to be most prevalent in the Indian Ocean, where there are many trade routes, and near Indonesia.

"But there could be other areas we simply don't know about yet," Miller said. "In fact, we're already beginning to receive feedback from additional witnesses of milky seas. Some of these accounts occurred in regions we had not thought to look before, and we're currently working to find matches with the satellite data."

Where I wanna be....she may be.

If the Simpsons have taught us anything it's that one day dolphins will rise against their human enslavers. I fear we may be witnessing the beginnings of that 'day.'

Fark had it listed as a giant undersea lava salamander surfacing briefly to feed.

My theory is some sort of disturbance, perhaps one not looked for like a small shower of radiation or hell, neutrinos activating the bioluminesce of those small organisms. Or an undersea earthquake.

If the bacteria are feeding off of something in the water and they're more prevalent in areas with more shipping, maybe they're feeding off of the human waste dumped overboard. Just a thought.

During my stint in the C.I.A, we tested a shark repellant with biological properties. The Idea was to create a living organism that would irritate the sharks to the point that they would leave the area. Years of genetic manipulation culminated in the birth of "Sharkesteris fleshremoviolis", a benign form of bacteria that attacks only the electromagnetic pores in the snout of sharks. Unfortunately Nature seldom plays by the rules we place on life, and mutation changed these microorganisms into something a bit more aggressive. They now have begun to decimate the population of most shark species and recent tests have shown them to be colonizing, and forming a delicious souplike substance out of sharkfins.

The Japanese have started full harvesting of the byproduct.

"Sharkesteris fleshremoviolis", Are you kidding? This 'would be' scientific termonology gave me a bit of a chuckle.
Never the less, the event is very interesting and even a bit spooky.
I have always been fascinated by the ocean. As a kid, I was glued to the t.v. screen every time there was a Jaque Cousteau special.
There really is a great deal we don't know about the ocean, and I am eagerly awaiting the answers.
