So cool but WHAT exactly is it?????????
when I was in the Navy I was the ships night baker and would go on deck to smoke. Normally it was so dark you couldn't see your hand in front of your face even with all the stars out..... but I can recall one night we were out around the Bermuda Triangle and I swore I saw a glow under the water. It wasn't like lights, it was a glow like glow in the dark stuff and went for as far as I could see.
It didn't like light the sky or illuminate anything which is weird.... but anyway here's an article that shows a satellite photo of it.... and finally I don't feel so nutty but now I wonder what is it? Quote:

Just wondering why this is posted in paranoia.
But no worries, its just my glow-in-the-dark-peed-in-the-ocean moving through the world :D |
I dunno about that shite, but here in Florida (Indian River to be exact) if you go boating at night you will see glow in the dark bacteria in the water.
It's really awesome to see. You can swirl your hand through the water and it will light up green. So awesome to go sailing at night and see a green wake behind your boat. Only seen it a few times though. |
I think it might be the bioluminescence, but as pointed out, they normally need nearby activity to light up.
I shat myself once, swimming back to the beach at Catalina island. Myself and a friend had anchored the boat about 50 yards offshore and were swimming back to the beach for the night where the rest of us were having a barbeque and a sleep-over. I turned over to do backstroke and saw this 'thing' in the water behind me. I called out to my buddy who looked behind him too and he started panicing and swimming faster shouting that he had one following him too. I almost lost it. I had shorts and dive fins on and it just kept pace with me. Then I realised that it only glowed with my kicks. Had a good chuckle on the beach. |

And if it is bacteria as noted above it needs some form of stimulus, what in the Hell is out there the size of Connecticut to stimulate these, 3 nights in a row? here's what the MSNBC site (a portion from the above link) said about it: Quote:

Way down below the ocean.
Where I wanna be....she may be. If the Simpsons have taught us anything it's that one day dolphins will rise against their human enslavers. I fear we may be witnessing the beginnings of that 'day.' |
Fark had it listed as a giant undersea lava salamander surfacing briefly to feed.
My theory is some sort of disturbance, perhaps one not looked for like a small shower of radiation or hell, neutrinos activating the bioluminesce of those small organisms. Or an undersea earthquake. |
it sounds Pretty Frarkin Awthumb.

If the bacteria are feeding off of something in the water and they're more prevalent in areas with more shipping, maybe they're feeding off of the human waste dumped overboard. Just a thought.

it could be so many things, but yea I would think its just the bacteria, but hey it could be pieces of Atlantis...

During my stint in the C.I.A, we tested a shark repellant with biological properties. The Idea was to create a living organism that would irritate the sharks to the point that they would leave the area. Years of genetic manipulation culminated in the birth of "Sharkesteris fleshremoviolis", a benign form of bacteria that attacks only the electromagnetic pores in the snout of sharks. Unfortunately Nature seldom plays by the rules we place on life, and mutation changed these microorganisms into something a bit more aggressive. They now have begun to decimate the population of most shark species and recent tests have shown them to be colonizing, and forming a delicious souplike substance out of sharkfins.
The Japanese have started full harvesting of the byproduct. |
"Sharkesteris fleshremoviolis", Are you kidding? This 'would be' scientific termonology gave me a bit of a chuckle.
Never the less, the event is very interesting and even a bit spooky. I have always been fascinated by the ocean. As a kid, I was glued to the t.v. screen every time there was a Jaque Cousteau special. There really is a great deal we don't know about the ocean, and I am eagerly awaiting the answers. |
