Reality Shifts
 

Maybe I'm just getting old and have a few screws loose or maybe this is really happening. Things change that shouldn't be. I'll be driving down a familiar street and know exactly where that manhole cover is that isn't flush with the pavement. I shift my wheels to avoid it automatically. It do this time and time again. Then after the umpteenth time, the next time I drive by the manhole is gone or moved. No road construction crew has been by to tear up the road and cover it over or move it, it's just moved by itself. This happens to me around once a month or so. It's not always manholes, sometimes it's the manufacturer's label on appliance or something else small and not especially noticeable. It doesn't happen to big things, at least my house hasn't moved (yet). It just seems to be little inconsequential things. Maybe it's early Alzheimers. Does this kind of thing happen to other people, or is it just me? :confused:

You guys don't watch enough television. This has already been explained in either Twilight Zone or one of those types of shows, maybe Amazing stories. Here is what is happening.

Time is a stream passing around stationary objects. We as humans are riding along with the stream. However, the stationary objects have to get into the stream somehow. There are two teams of blue guys that accomplish this. One team sets up everything in it's place so that when Time reaches it everything is as it is supposed to be. The other team comes in after time goes by and tears the whole thing down again. The anomolies are tiny details the setup team has forgotten. Other signs that this is happening is when you look for your keys and can't find them, but come back a few minutes later only to find them exactly where you knew you left them in the first place. If you had gone around the block and returned to the manhole you would have seen it right back where it was supposed to be. It is easier to forget or miss tiny details like labels and keys, but you never see couches and cars missing because they are just to hard to forget about putting back because of their size.

It was on TV so it must be true.

Seriously though, I know exactly what you mean. Some times this happens to me with conversations as well. Like I might *know* for a fact that someone mentioned a certain detail, or asked a certain question before, etc., but then nobody knows what I am talking about when I bring it up, like it never happened...

And then I wonder if dreamt about it....

Humans in general are not very reliable though, but I gotta make do with what I've got, don't I?

The interesting thing is the manhole cover did move back to where it was the next time I went by. It must have been a blue man mistake. :lol:
I know this is a bit silly and I'm glad people are having fun with it. I just had to throw it out there to see what others have to say. I just figured I'd be the only one that this ever happened to and I should go and get my jar replaced... I mean get my brain checked or something.

Ok, it happened again and now I have proof, well sort of. Here's some background. There's a small drawer in my kitchen which was cheaply constructed. 5 days ago my wife pushed the drawer in too hard and the face of the drawer popped off. She mentioned it to me when I got home from work that day and I took a look at it. I drew a few ovals on it to highlight some things. The two ovals on the left and right are where the face attached to the sides fo the drawer. The face plate had a left-right groove where the bottom of the drawer fit against the plate. I drew an oval showing the part of the plate below the groove. Notice how part of the plate below the groove broke away also? Here's a pic of the drawer showing how the plate attached to it:

Notice the piece of wood left attached to the bottom of the drawer from the face plate. Here's another pic of the drawer from the bottom:

The piece of the face plate left on the drawer is glued on. You can see it reflecting the camera flash.

So, what's this got to do with the price of beer in Milwaukee? When I first saw the plate last Thursday (5 days ago) the bottom piece of the plate was whole! The groove ran left to right and there was no piece broken off the bottom. I remeber it distinctly because I thought, " Well, at least the bottom groove runs all the way across the plate and that will help keep it held in place until we can get it fixed." Of course, when I noticed the piece had broken off yesterday I asked my wife about it she said it had always been broken as it is now and thinks I am a loon for thinking otherwise. This is truly bizarre to me. I know absolutely and positively that the bottom piece was not broken off when I first saw it.
Something changed. Somehow that broken piece shifted from the face plate to the drawer (in my reality). Of course, now that I have talked to my wife about it and two people have witnessed where the broken piece currently is, it will stay that way. I think this has to do with only one person seeing something as opposed to more than one. I wonder, if I had directly pointed out to my wife 5 days ago my thought about the groove being intact, if it would have stayed that way. There's no way I will ever know that! IMO if two people see a piece of reality they 'confirm' it is a certain way. If only one person sees it then it can shift. At least that's the way it seems to work for me. :hmm:

Perhaps your subconcience expects this to happen and you project what your brain wants you to see, or what it expects to see, when in reality there was glue, and the manhole was there but you didn't turn enough, or too much.

I can't rule it out. I can't say I know my brain is working perfectly and that there's nothing wrong with my thought process. If it's me, I'd like to know what it is that I'm doing and what I need to change so I see the same reality every time. It has only started happening to me (that I know of) in the last year or two. Hmm, that's right about the time I started watching the Stargate series... but that's a whole nother thread. Maybe I should just ignore it and hope it goes away. :confused:

Was it also about the time you got a promotion/new job/more reponsibility/new boss at work?

I notice that both times you mention are just after work. Stress will do funny things to your head and everybody reacts to it differently. If you recently added more stress to the equation it may have been enough to push you over your personal threshold.

Not a bad suggestion, but no that doesn't apply here. I am a public employee and, as most people probably realize, I don't have a particularly stressful job. Thinking about it, it did seem to start some time after my first child was born. I know there has been a bit of added stress with raising a child, but I don't think it would be enough to push me 'over the edge.'

It's happened to me, too. I've thought something (like the groove thing), only to come back in a little bit and realized that it's changed. I just shrug it off, believing that I wasn't paying attention.

Damn.. I thought someone may have had similar experiences where the whole world seems to just move slightly to one side or everything either speeds up or slows down.. reversing itself a little time later to compensate.. that's weird..

Are you referring to the Stephen King movie "The Langoliers"?
Basically a plane takes off and goes through a rip in time. They are then stuck at a point in this "time-stream" where the world is technically the same, but there are no people and everything else is frozen in time. Then these Langoliers come and start eating the landscape away and they have to escape. Good movie.

No, The Langoliers only dealt with the destruction after time moved on. It had no little blue building crews. It was a better book, BTW. The movie was a "made for TV" nightmare. It followed the story, but I thought it was a poor translation.

Now I know I'm not the only one that has this happen, I normally do the same thing. It really pisses me off though when this happens. I hate those incompetent blue men who miss out on details, we need to cut their benefits plan and put them on an HMO, then they can see what it's like when someone dealing with your life misses out on details :P

BTW: I thought it was funny when his manhole moved. LOL
