Gorillaz - Demon Days
Oh man.
So I order it off Amazon a few weeks before it drops, which is today. Since it was coming from the UK, I didn't think it would come until like, thursday. That's what it was saying on Amazons tracking page. But when I come home today, there's a box from amazon. Oh, I probably should've mentioned that I ordered "Requiem for a Dream" and the Sin City making of book the same time I ordered Demon Days. So I assumed the box was the DVD and the book. I open it, and what do I see? I see "Demon Days". Unfortunately, I've been busy all day, so I haven't given it a listen, I've only started to listen to it just now. I was just so surprised that it came today, the day it drops. So once I give it a good listen, I'll post up a good review. Demon Days comes out 24th in USA. |
I'm diggin' it so far. But since this is your thread, I'll let you do the initial review.
|
Naw, go for it.
|
It's been in heavy rotation in my crib and car. I really like it.
|
good disc...dennis hopper is slightly strange.
i like most of the tracks, though. |
Just picked it up..
Has some fun tunes... like the monkey one lol Really like Feel Good Inc. =) |
I've only listened to it once or twice, but I don't like it too much. It didn't really have a song that "sucked me in" like Clint Eastwood did. Maybe it just takes time ;)
|
How in the world did I miss this? I love the Gorillaz. Must go out and buy this tomorrow.
|
I'm really digging "Feel Good Inc." and "Fire coming out of the Monkey's Head!"
Its a little different sound than the last album, but definetely something to pick up if your into that. |
Not got all the way through it yet - keep restarting it because I like it a lot. :)
|
With Automator gone I thought the album could be a disappointment but, for the most part, DangerMouse comes through. It sounds more synthesizer-based than -drum but it works. The use of a choir in some songs is a nice touch, especially in the concluding "Don't Get Lost in Heaven" and "Demon Days." The former has a noticeable Beach Boys sound, by the way. Other highlights for me were "Kids with Guns" (nice bassline), "All Alone" and "DARE."
|
oooh.. this is a great album!! wasnt a fan of them before but now i like em alot.
Every Planet We Reach Is Dead is probably my favorite... but feel good inc. is a great one right now. |
I'm kinda disappointed with the lack of Del but overall I liked it a lot. "Dare" is probably my favorite.
|
DARE is just great. also kinda like O Green World. i'd have to say this is one of the better cds so far this year, even if every single song isn't a homerun. i like artists who are willing to experiment, especially when they pull it off so well.
|
did anyone see their music video?
|
I love Gorillaz vids

Am I the only person who doesn't like this album? I downloaded it a while ago, and I'm glad I did because I'd have bought it otherwise.
I can not get into this album at all. There are two tracks that I can stomach, and I don't even know their names or track numbers because they weren't that good in my eyes. If you guys like the album, that is fantastic, and I'm happy for you. To me this is sub par compared to their last one. |
OK, sorry to bring this back a week later, but I changed my mind.
Thanks to the new ipod commercial I got "Feel Good Inc." in my head, and HAD to hear it. Like I stated before, I downloaded the CD a while ago, but wasn't initially impressed... until I gave it another listen. I now have done a complete 360. It really is an all around good CD, and I caved and made the purchase this afternoon. YAY for advertising!! |
Man, I was about to say that you're the 1st person who I've seen who doesn't like the album.
Then a week later, you like it. Um, I said i was gonna write a review, right? Here, track by track: Intro- Great usage of the oboe, ya dont hear that much anymore. Creepy high pitched voice of god knows what, and then a deep voice sayin something i only actually understood once is a appropriate way to start this album. Last Living Souls- Kinda starts out dead, then picks up like a zombie outta the ground, with that great guitar zizz zizz alternation. its got alot of the spacemonkeys feeling, and the ambient bass that leads you out. Kids With Guns- Sounds a little too much like Last Living Souls, at least the intro. I looooove the chorus, its really great. If you didn't already know, Damon just mumbles random stuff when they record it, he doesnt write lyrics. O Green World- I love it. I love the intro, kinda plucking around, then laces tighten and it turns into a great riff. Solid song, I can just fall into it. Dirty Harry- The only song I don't really like, only because it came out as a white label ep and download a few months before, and I listened to it constantly. Pretty good, that guy from Pharcyde sounds natural in it, just blends in. I still miss Del as the rapper though. Feel Good Inc- I love the megaphone verse. The desparation in 2D's voice is adorable and touching in the chorus. De La Soul's first verse fits, but the 2nd verse is too repetitive. Its got a good hypnotic type quality though. El Manana- My favourite from the whole record. Just beautiful. Thats why its in my sig. Every Planet We Reach Is Dead- I really like the worn out bana na na na, na na na, na na. And the claps. I cant wait to clap to it in concert. November Has Come- Nice and mellow beginning, but MF Doom wakes you up with his verses, and again with the desparation in 2Ds voice. Inspiring. All Alone- The chorus. Oh Man. Deep, desprate, Deep, chipmonk? I totally forget who raps on this track, but its great. The little bit with the female vocals, angelic in a mildly depressing song. Noodle? White Light- PUNK RAWK! White light, alcohol. And scatting. Another heavenly break. Nice balance. DARE- When i 1st heard it, I was like, HEY ITS THE ELEVATOR from the website. But nope, its dare. Shaun Ryder is excellent, although he doesnt really have a traditional singing voice, just a cockney english slur type thing. Great bassline. I love it when Shaun joins in the chorus. Very out of the open. Fire Coming Out of the Monkey's Head- Great narration, good story, I can really get the social commentary. And to even it out, a few verses, again with the light desparation. Gotta love the boing, ba boing, boing ba boing going on. Don't Get Lost In Heaven- The piano is heavenly, the lyrics are reflective of the last song, as they should be. The record was gonna be a soundtrack to the movie they were making, but the movie got cancelled. Angelic choir. This is dawn to... Demon Days- The orchestric intro is fantastic. This track always brings me out, sitting through the whole record, it starts with an evening of partying drinking as seen in the feel good inc video, things get bleak, you've made a big mistake. But this song, it's a brand new day. It has the feel. Its a fantastic ending, but it leaves you wanting more. |
i agree in the most part with what you just said. good review.

Man, I was drunk and tired when i wrote that. But, it's the same caliber I'd write if i were sober and well rested.
|
I think the CD kicks serious butt. Definately good music. Sadly enough probably the closest thing to make out music i now own.
|
I'm not sure if this works outside Britain but if it does... it's a full Gorillaz gig recorded live in Manchester complete with some high quality animated goodness.

Demon Days was good, but I liked the first one a lot better. Demon days just didn't have the tracks that pulled me in like the other.
|
I was a huge fan of the first album, and picked up Phase One: Celebrity Takedown when it came out. So, when I heard they were actually DOING a second album, I was pretty excited. I picked it up the first day it was available, and was very impressed.
From the first time I heard Kids with Guns, Feel Good, Inc., and Dare, I knew they had another winner on their hands. For many the album takes a listen or 2 to really catch them, but I think that overall the album is better than their first. If you're not into it as much and still want a new Gorillaz fix, pick up Laika Come Home if you haven't already. That's definitely fun. :) |
Oh my goodness, Laika is fucking fantastic.
If you like dub reggae and Gorillaz, go listen to it. It's fabulous. |
