Stoner Rock

I've been into Clutch, and Melvins for as long as I've been into rock, but I'm really starting to discover more bands recently.

Unida, Sleep, Kyuss, Gammera, Pelican, Skullflower, a few more I cant think of off the top of my head.

I recently went to www.cosmicdoom.com and have been listening to the radio station they have. There's some really good music there in case you're interested.

How many people here are also into this genre, and do you have any suggestions as to who I should check out?

I like some of it and can think of a few more suggestions for ya:
Down - supergroup with Anselmo and Rex from Pantera, Pepper Keenan from COC, and members of Crowbar, too bad Anselmo decided to stick with SJR, which is a basically a piss poor copy of Pantera, but anyways...
Queens of the Stone Age - Spin off band of Kyuss
Bongzilla
Fu Machu
Sleep
Monster Magnet
Crowbar

ill second bongzilla and
monster magnet, for the magnet, the earlier CDs are much sludgier and it slowly gets more mainstream as the cds progress

Can someone give me some comparisons to explain what "stoner rock" is? I've heard some of Queens of the Stone Age, but that really doesn't help me. When I think "stoner" I think Pink Floyd or hip-hop.

I've loved Down since I first heard them, but I never thought they were the same genre. Either way, it's really good music. I've only got the newest QOTSA album, and liked it, I just haven't got around to getting any more by them yet. A guy at work used to burn Monster Magnet CDs for me a couple years ago because I made fun of him for listening to them (all I knew was "Space Lord"). I really like them now, but I cant find the CDs. I've also got 2 Fu Manchu CDs ("King of the Road" and I cant remember the other one), but never really got into them. I dont know what it is, but they just never really stood out to me.

I'll have to look for some Bongzilla and Crowbar.

As far as clarifying, I'll try. The name certainly doesn't help. To me, stoner rock sounds older than it is, and it's usually kind of slow (you'd just have to hear it to get my meaning). For the most part, it just sounds like straight out older (70's) rock, but made today.

A friend of mine once said Clutch sounds like what Zeppelin would have sounded like if they'd been born later. I've also hear Jimi and Sabbath classified as stoner rock though, so I dont know. Just try to listen to a few songs from any band here, and you should get a feel for what stoner rock is.

And here I thought Phish and the Grateful Dead were stoner rock.

Well you learn something new every day I guess.

depends who your talking to marq
most i know call it acid rock or jam bands and get confused when i say acid rock (when i say acid rock i usually mean acid as in the stuff that burns through things and not LSD) instead of stoner rock when trying to explan what kind of music said band plays

That quote you gave was the perfect description of stoner rock. It's back to basics rock. The only pedal you need is a wah pedal. It's loud and the music is as ugly as the band members.

Another great stoner rock band is Corrosion of Conformity, any of their cd's from 'Blind' and on.

I second that. I definately feel Phish and the Dead as being more of my image of stoner rock.

Stoner rock generally has chugging bass lines, sludgy power-chord driven guitars and that retro-70's low-fi sound.

Black Sabbath is the mother of stoner rock. Kyuss perfected it. Stoner rock bands I love:

Kyuss
Fu Manchu
Queens of the Stone Age (1st two albums are probably the only ones I would classify as 'Stoner Rock')
Orange Goblin
Mondo Generator
The Dwarves
Clutch

Rock on...

also i think when you guys picture a stoner you're probably thinking more along the lines ofa hippy stoner instead of a long haired leather wearing loud agressive stoner

Edit I just got a free pass to rhapsody music for a month and im slowly going through the stoner rock section they have
and i gotta throw in Nebula to the mix and Atomic Bitchwax

I gave it a listen, and I am most certainly not a fan. Too bad; I had high hopes.

You're all going to laugh and discredit quickly because of their shortlived pop status, but Marcy Playground is one of my favorites.
