Does it ever disturb you...

when guys sing about dead artists? I'm thinking of Vincent (Josh Groban sang it, Clay sang a bit of it on AI) and this other song about Matisse (by Derek Lind).

Maybe "disturb" is a bit strong, but it just feels kind of weird to me... Maybe if more people wrote songs about dead people...

Knaw not really disturbing. I'd write a song about a dead person. Vincent is a really beautiful song that Don McLean wrote about Vincent Van Gough (sp?). Theres quite a few people who have written songs about dead people or at least people who are sort of dead to the world... Dave Grohl wrote "Hero" for Kurt for example...lots of people have done it. Especially in rap music. Not all that uncommon.

Now that you mentioned the rap thing... I think maybe why 'Vincent' made me raise my eyebrows is the because it's written like a love song. (Well, that's the best I can come up with anyway.)

Two of my favorites are:

"Rock and Roll Heaven" by the Righteous Brothers about Jim Croce, Janis Joplin, Otis Redding and Bobby Darin

"Abraham, Martin and John" by Dion about Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King, John Kennedy and Bobby Kennedy. All victims of assassinations.

*I* almost spit my drink out, I thought the metaphor you were thinking of was something *else*, something R18, perhaps... Clearyly I need to get my head out of the gutter.

*ahem* right...

Just out of curiousity, what was it you were thinking of?

I was thinking it might be the name of some band I don't know about..television reference, inside joke, I honestly don't know what it could possibly mean thats why I asked haha. I'm sure someone out there is probably like "Fallsauce...it symbolizes war...the sauce is blood...it's like..blood being spilt..thats so deep" Sorry for the thread jack I'll be on my merry way now (whistles)

I listen to rap music, so I'm used to it. About 1/3 of the lines in rap are shout-outs to or talking about Pac, Biggie, or whichever other dead rapper they decide to associate themselves with. I try to avoid rappers that do it too often though. :P

Well, what about Lou Reed and John Cale's "Songs for Drella"? It's all in tribute to Andy Warhol and it's one of the best albums I own. But then again, you get something like Thursday's "Ian Curtis" which was just a bunch of kids writing about a guy who died before they were born. So maybe i only like songs written about dead people if they songwriters knew the deceased?

That's a good point. So maybe that's why I find 'Vincent' the oddest. (or maybe it's just the lyrics: "But I could have told you vincent / This world was never meant for one as beautiful as you") Maybe I'd like it more if someone who knew him personally sang it.

But 'Picasso Visits Matisse' (The Derek Lind one, and quite an cool song...) isn't too bad because it's telling a story in third-person, (I wonder if you can call this a fanfiction? It's got dialog and a story line... )

And then there's "I'll be Missing You" which is just a great song. Actually, I think of this song as a eulogy, so... totally normal.

(I have to resist the urge not to "threadjack" again. And BTW, Untitled, I'm female.)

The Mars Volta's entire album Deloused In The Comatorium is about/for/a tribute to thier dead friend who wasn't really a musician, but he was an artist. That album is mindblowing tho, in spite of (or maybe due to?) being quite disturbing...

Well, in regard to the Tupac pictures, I have to say it's considerably more disturbing when a dead artist writes a new song...or for that matter an entire album. John Lennon could get away with two songs, but you've got to wonder whether Tupac planned on this or what?

p.s. don't bother to explain the phenomenon, I understand
