<b><i>MTV2 Message Board All Things Indie Once again, MTV2 is a proud sponsor of the Shortlist Music Prize, and this year we're partnering with XM Radio. The Shortlist Music prize honors the year's most creative and adventurous albums; past winners include Damien Rice, N*E*R*D and Sigur Ros. Each year, music insiders are asked to pick their long list of albums they think have not received the attention they deserved. The panel's initial "Long List" of nominated albums have been announced, see below, and the "Shortlist" of 10 finalists will be announced in mid-September. The 2004 panel of Listmakers are: Norah Jones, Chris Carraba (Dashboard Confessional), Robert Smith (The Cure), Jack Black, Serj Tankian (System of a Down), the Dixie Chicks, John Mayer, Josh Homme (Queens of the Stone Age), Ahmir "?uestlove" Thompson (The Roots), Will-I-Am (Black Eyed Peas) and the film director Jim Jarmusch, as well as radio personality Nic Harcourt, and journalists Neil Strauss, Josh Tyrangiel, Toure, Thor Christensen, Margeaux Watson and Tom Moon. The Long List of albums, picked by the above Listmakers, are: Artist Album Title Cesaria Evora Voz d'Amor TV On The Radio Desperate Youth, Blood Thirsty Babes Wrens The Meadowlands PJ Harvey Uh Huh Her Franz Ferdinand Franz Ferdinand Belle & Sebastian Dear Catastrophe Waitress Scarling Sweet Heart Dealer Oceansize Effloresce Keb' Mo' Keep It Simple The Killers Hot Fuss Bob Schneider I'm Good Now Patty Larkin Regrooving the Dream David Bowie Reality Muse (UK) Absolution Eagles Of Death Metal Peace Love Death Metal Bebel Gilberto Bebel Gilberto Buckethead Bucketheadland, Vol. 2 Bad Acid Trip Lynch the Weirdo Joe Strummer Streetcore Blonde Redhead Misery Is a Butterfly Phil Kline Zippo Songs Blanche If We Can't Trust the Doctors Ghostface Killah Pretty Toney Album [Clean] Loretta Lynn Van Lear Rose Neil Young Greendale Holly Golightly Truly She Is None Other Macy Gray The Trouble With Being Myself Cee-Lo Cee-Lo Green... I was led to believe that in order to be nominated the album had to be brand new but I guess not. Asta!! |
My vote's for Dear Catastrophe Waitress, followed not-so-closely by Absolution. But there are tons of albums here that I haven't heard, and quite a few that I have heard good things about.
|
I prolly haven't heard half of the albums on the list so far. Last year was good though.
Asta!! |
My vote's for The Streets - A Grand Don't Come for Free followed by Loretta Lynn - Van Lear Rose, and after that, the wrens - the meadowlands tied with Secret Machines - Now Here is Nowhere
The Fiery Furnaces should have had Blueberry Boat, Not Gallowsbird's Bark, nominated. That would be my choice if it was up for an award. And to the best of my knowledge, any album released since the last award was given is eligible for the award. |
I've heard and liked quite a few of the albums on the list, but I think Muse - Absolution is the best of the lot.
By the way, if you go to the official website: http://www.shortlistofmusic.com/ you can see which "listmaker" nominated which album. |
eh franz ferdinand, my morning jacket, streets, tv on the radio in no particular order imo
|
The Streets
Belle & Sebastian Dizzie Rascal Muse Franz Ferdinand (by the way Keane sucks) |
Knaw Keane are great...their sound takes a lil while to get used to though.
Asta!! |
Well shoot. Might as well throw in my recommendations
Finalists: Rufus Wainwright - Want One Air - Talkie Walkie Jem - Finally Woken Nellie McKay - Get Away From Me The Streets - A Grand Don't Come For Free With PJ Harvey getting the prize (even though I have not heard the album) |
they posted the finalists, as I read on pitchfork.
Dizzee Rascal, TV on the Radio, Loretta Lynn, Nellie McKay, Air, The Streets, the Killers, Ghostface, and i think others are in the final. EDIT: Wilco and (BLECH!) Franz Ferdinand are also in the final. |
Out of those, I vote for TV on the Radio or Wilco.
|
Is there a website where I can hear what the fuckin craze about T.V. On The Radio is all about? Cause that single Staring At The Sun doesn't really do anything for me I'll even go as far as saying I think it's pretty lousy. If all their songs sound like than then I don't see why they made the final 10. And honestly I'm as big a Wu-Tang fan as you could possibly get and I don't really think Ghostface deserved his spot above some of the other albums I saw recomended.
Asta!! |
It's a tough call, but i've gotta pick The Streets, even over Loretta Lynn, whose album i loved.
Too bad Mastodon's Leviathan didn't get released in time. That album is a masterpiece if there ever was one. |
