I did a quick search and didn't find any related stuff, so here goes.

I downloaded WinMX the other day when KazaaLite inexplicably stopped working.
I'm in Japan and behind one bitch of a University firewall, so it may be affecting some things, but I don't know for sure.

Anyway, the scenario is thus: I search for songs and stuff, find a song that has a ton of users, and then proceed to try to download it, only to invariably run into the ol' "Remotely Queued __ of ___." What in the christ does this mean? Why do I need to wait three days for my damned track of "Nothing Else Matters"? How do I surmount this little dilemma?

Any advice?

The first number is your position in the remote user's queue. The second number is the total number of download slots that user has available. The reason it takes three days to download a song on WinMX is because the tight-ass morons who use it configure it improperly, in the erroneous belief that their upload bandwidth is subtracted from their download bandwidth. WinMX would rock if everyone just left their settings as configured by the installation program.

yep. one you use it - and have some patience - winmx can be pretty neat. however, you CAN change the configurations to your advantage. i also use overnet connected to edonkey, and you can adjust some parameters but there's less freedom to change. however, that really makes for a fairer group of file sharers.

winmx is easy because it configures so much for you on installation; overnet needs an open port allowance on your router and firewall, which can be a little tricky for a newbie.

I used to use WINMX and I loved it, but now whenever I try to search anything, it comes up empty. Am I doing something wrong? I find that edonkey works best now.

make sure that your firewall settings are correct.

While we're on that subject, how do you configure ZoneAlarm for WinMX? I can't get search results nor a chat channel list when it's turned on, even though I am allowing WinMX to both access the Internet and act as a server.

not sure. I have done much more work with routers and their built-in firewalls, I don't use zone alarm.
