Favourite punk bands with female singers?

What are yours. I would say my favourite would be Sleater-Kinney, Distillers, and Bikini Kill.

Tophat665 08-28-2004 05:37 AM

Gotta go with the Go-Gos. Sure, everyone knows them for Alex the Seal (I know - Our lips are Sealed) and the couple pop albums they did in the 80s, but they started as a punk band and their most recent album starts back towards it.

pan6467 08-28-2004 07:07 AM

one word....... BLONDIE

ForwardtoDeath 08-28-2004 07:23 AM

Is this for bands with just female singers, or are bands that have both female and male singers included? Im going to assume that both are ok so Ill say:

Vice Squad
Crass
New York Rel-X (great people, do a lot for the scene)
The Expelled
Nausea
A.P.P.L.E.

pedro padilla 08-28-2004 09:38 PM

go goīs ainīt punk bro. 45 grave with the incredible Dinah Cancer were unforgettable if you were alive in them days. Faith No Moreīs coupla gigs with the hideous Courtney Cobain were memorable as well. And, yes FNM was pretty fuckin punk back in the day.

pedro padilla 08-28-2004 09:40 PM

Shit, I forgot all about X. Exene Cevenka. Was married to, and has a son with Viggo lord of the rings guy.

Zephyr66 08-28-2004 10:01 PM

not punk, but thrash almost fits in the same scene: Holy Moses

heroquest 08-29-2004 09:49 PM

Ya Blondie kicks ass.

Nafter 08-30-2004 02:02 PM

Distillers, tsunami bomb, and TAT, are the only punk bands ive heard w/ female leads, all of em or good but i think i need to listen to more punk heh.

heroquest 08-31-2004 10:00 PM

Is Jackoff Jill any good?

Stompy 09-01-2004 08:22 AM

From what I've heard, Jackoff Jill is like... industrial goth, or a lesser variation of Marilyn Manson and the Spooky Kids circa 1993, just with females

shinmano 09-01-2004 04:33 PM

Bread And Water
And
Melt Banana

Bread and Water can only be found on Soulseek

mrcraptastic 09-02-2004 12:34 AM

SinisterMotives 09-02-2004 04:46 PM

Lush and Romeo Void

pedro padilla 09-02-2004 06:15 PM

neither one can be considered even remotely punk rock. Thatīs using the most flexible criteria.

nexusmind 09-04-2004 10:21 PM

Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Metric

nexusmind 09-04-2004 10:23 PM

Broken Social Scene have 2 good female singers, Feist has some good solo stuff outside the band too

CandleInTheDark 09-05-2004 02:56 PM

Yeah, saw the punk part after posting. But hell, punk is a generally misused word anyway.

hilbert25 09-06-2004 03:38 AM

Jack Off Jill : Good, but not punk

In terms of pure punk, probably Sleater-Kinney

If we go more loosely, probably the Pixies and Veruca Salt.

siogo 09-09-2004 02:09 PM

Pauline Murry was in Penetration back in the 70s. She was good.

Nafter 09-09-2004 04:06 PM

ill throw in the cranberries as well but not true punkpunk in my eyes

pedro padilla 09-09-2004 10:12 PM

theres a band from berlin. early 90īs that were fairly big time in europe and none of you ever heard of. Jingo de Lunch. fucking incredible singer. try and find some. youīll like.

Mr_Wall 09-09-2004 11:45 PM

Sioxie & the banshees, Patti Smith and Horrorpops

dtheriault 09-12-2004 10:09 PM

1. The Avengers: "Paint it Black"
2. Patti Smith "Rock n Roll Nigga"
3. X: Exene "White Girl"

heroquest 09-13-2004 05:49 PM

I always preferred it when Frank was singing. Veruca Salt is fun to listen to.

cjvasco 09-15-2004 09:35 AM

Bikini Kill

JumpinJesus 09-18-2004 08:21 AM

No one's mentioned the Plasmatics?

Bryndian_Dhai 09-18-2004 02:34 PM

*grins*

I will.

My favorites are Siouxie and the Banshees and the Plasmatics.

I used to want to BE Wendy O. Williams.... 'least 'til I heard she was a junkie. *shrugs* I did a reasonable facsimile until I got clean, lmao, but still. Don't want to die, thanks. ;)

Baldrick 09-18-2004 02:40 PM

Blondie, and my personal fav - Siouxie and the Banshees.

null_duality 09-18-2004 06:59 PM

Bif Naked?

-:mantra:- 09-19-2004 07:52 PM

Shit man, a lot of those bands aren't punk
I know I'll get flamed for this but I don't even think Blondie was.....
And then came Brody Dalle. yep, Distillers..raw power

Soda_BoB 09-20-2004 05:12 AM

I'm not sure if Denali is punk but Denali - Normal Days is a good song none-the-less. I also like Sleater-Kinney, don't really know many punk bands with female singer though.

Depends on where you're from, really. I don't find Blondie very punk, but a lot of people here do. *shrugs*

Well, at the beginning, punk and new wave were the same thing. See New Wave music - Wikipedia:
Quote:

Originally, Seymour Stein, the head of Sire Records needed a term by which he could market his newly signed CBGB's veteran bands. Because radio consultants in the US had advised their clients that punk rock was a fad (and because many stations that had embraced Disco had been hurt by backlash), he settled on the term "new wave." ... Thus, the term "new wave" was interchangeable with punk rock.
So, it really depends on what you mean by 'punk'. Blondie was one of those first punk bands to be marketed as 'new wave'.
