VH1's "Most Metal Moments"

For the first time since the show was on, I thought of it while I was browsing TFP. So, any real metalheads find themselves wondering what the hell they were thinking? Half of that stuff wasn't even related to metal. I'd even let the hair metal stuff slide, but Aerosmith?

What would you pick as the number 1 most metal moment?

My choice would be Mayhem's singer, who went by the name "Dead," killing himself, leaving a suicide note simply stating "Please excuse the blood" and the follow-up, which included bandmate Euronymus cooking and eating his brain while drummer Hellhammer made a necklace from his skull.

A close second would be VH1's #45, Gorgoroth's defiling of the Pope's hometown with impaled goat heads and crucifixions on stage.

I heard about the Mayhem stuff, how utterly bizarre. I would hesitate to call it a "Metal" moment though.

It was late when I wrote that, and I must have confused two Mayhem events.

What I intended to say should be #1 is when Count Grishnackh stabbed Euronymous 23 times out of fear that Euronymous had become the new leader of the black metal scene, which he believed was rightfully his position. That's more of a metal moment than what I originally posted.

that was the band who had the members competing to become the most hardcore wasnt it? I remember seeing that and going holy shit those guys are nuts.

Derwood 08-15-2004 07:47 PM

The #1 moment was something I had never heard of, and sounded like the least metal thing I can think of.

I forgot what the #1 moment was.

Was it that Led Zeppelin/shark thing?

Derwood 08-16-2004 06:12 PM

No, it was all the metal musicians doing their "We are the World" song or whatever.

wasn't that U2? or is that the Band-Aid thing

k1ng 08-16-2004 08:12 PM

I didnt see this. Was the thing with Burzum and the burning church on it?

Cynthetiq 08-16-2004 08:53 PM

a few of the "expert" talking heads are friends of mine that work on various VH1 productions... I find it funny that people listen to what they say and then take it as gospel because some person on TV said it.

The group called itself something like "Hear'in Aid", and I think the song was "Stars". I've been trying to find reference to it online, and only find tiny little snippets. I'm starting to think they made it up. If anyone can get me more info, or a proper spelling, or a link to streaming audio, that would be cool.

Other than that, I found it to be a very entertaining series. I didn't mind that it stretched as far as "hard rock". And there were a lot of details that I had never heard before; for instance, the "Van Halen groupie incentive program". I'd heard that story many times, but that was the first time that I heard that David Lee Roth came up with it as a way to get his roadies butts in gear to strike the set quickly and avoid having to pay overtime. Brilliant.

How "Metal" did you all really thing VH1 was going to be?

It's not about how metal they are or can get, it's about research and what they are willing to show on tv. They do plenty of research for the behind the music, why not for this shit?

that they do. BTM is done by a different group of people than the Most and the 100 Greatest...since the metal scene doesn't have as many "scribes" who chronicled it there's not that many people who know the scene that can actually speak about it, which is how several friends of mine got onto the show.

You are both wrong. Actually, all the "Top 100" list shows on VH1 are compiled by polling musicians, managers, record companies and writers. They ask them all to list their top 20 or 30 of whatever the category is, then they tally all the votes and list the top 100 in the order they got votes.

It was Hear'n Aid and the song was Stars, I remember it quite well from back in the day. Sorry, no media for it although no doubt it is buried somewhere in the couple dozen old VHS tapes that I've had sitting around for 20 years. Here's a quick link I found, not sure if you've seen this or not: Hear'n Aid

You're telling a guy who works at MTV and knows guys who work on the shows that he's wrong?

Thanks, the real spelling was a big help. There's a 36-second Real Audio clip on this page: Ultimate Metal Reviews - Hear 'n Aid--Stars

Um, yes? Sorry, that's how I understood that it worked.

:) It's not as cut and dry as that... the producers, talent, managers all have plenty of other things to do than "Please answer this survey..." They try to get some input on it, but alas, when it comes to some of the silly themed shows we have like, one that recently just got it's budget approval, name of the show, 40 Greatest Celebrity Hair Moments, which was originally 40 Worst Hair Metal Moments...

Usually it's the producer and the production who sits down and puts the show together into something that "makes sense" and can be teased before and after commercials so that we can continue to sell ad time and get you to sit still in your seat for hours and hours. Why do you think that some of the shows go over days and days until you hit #1?

The lists are more opinions of the group that worked on it rather than actual sales, Neilsen ratings, public opinion polls, etc.

Sorry to bust the bubble if you thought it was based on more research and industry polling, which maybe the FIRST ones were done like that...100 All Time Greatest Songs, I think was done like that...

I will have to admit to having watched the "Top 8 Jens" show, and my reaction at the time to the "experts" was that they had grabbed anyone who wandered through the studio at the wrong time. I guess I was close!

When I worked at the VH1 studios I can't tell you how many times "extras" were recruited to just read some lines and do skits, especially on the RuPaul show...

you know people who cheated on tests in school? these were probably the same people... :D

And a photograph of the suicide being used as the cover for the album "Dawn of The Black Hearts"
