Lollapalooza 2004 Cancelled
A friend who was going just showed me this and was fucking pissed:
A MESSAGE FROM PERRY To all my Fellow Artisans, Activists, and Feverish Supporters, It is with heart gripped despair that I inform you of Lollapalooza's disbandment for the summer of 2004. To say that you terribly miss something that never was born is somewhat odd, yet in this case, it is quite accurate. They apparently got this in a letter sent to their house. It got called off due to crappy sales, so it seems. Any thoughts?

I read about this on another board. Apparently the show's headliners (Sonic Youth, Flaming Lips, and whoever the third band was) aren't well-known enough or don't have broad enough appeal to generate the volume of ticket sales such an expensive show would require to turn a profit.

Sonic Youth, PJ Harvey, and Wilco are some of my favorite groups. I love the Pixies but it says they were playing to only New York, so I would have missed them anyway. Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and Von Bondies and Gomez and The Flaming Lips and all the others would have been great to watch. This sucks.
I admit, I didn't buy a ticket, but I actually forgot about Lollapalooza after I heard about it a couple months ago. Maybe I'm never in the right place to hear the advertising? |
