Beasties Boys - To the 5 Boroughs!!
New album today!! For those that got it, what are your thoughts? I've only given it a couple spins so far....I like it initially....kinda old school...
|
I'm picking it up later today. It's only $9.99 at Best Buy.
|
I got a copy sent over from a friend in the UK last week and I've been enjoying it every single day. Definitely worth the money in my opinion.
|
FUCKIN' BADASS.
More then makes up for the 6 year wait. The beats are new and original... amazing. The rhymes are on the mark. Nothing wrong with it. Nothing at all. I'm just in... *drool* |
My favorite album of the Boys is "Check Your Head", so I'm disappointed that this is 15 tracks of just hip-hop. Plus everything is produced, meaning no live instruments anywhere.
That said, there are some good tracks. "Ch-Ch-Check it Out", "Oh, Word!" and "Shazzam" are my favs on the first listen. I'm sure the rest will grow on me, but it mostly sounds like the hip-hop portions of "Hello Nasty". |

I like it a lot so far. Beastie Boys can do no wrong.

I heard one of the songs on the new album on the radio a few months ago and was not very impressed... not sure what song it was, but I definitly remember the lyrics having a political message. Anyway, I'll have to sample the rest of the album and hope that it's better than what I've already heard.

You probably heard 'In A World Gone Mad', it was their response to the Iraq War. That song isn't on the album.... |

Yeah, I posted my favorite songs further up this page.

I didn't like the album too much. A few good songs here and there, but seemed pretty bad to me.

FYI, Rolling Stone gave the new album FIVE FREAKIN STARS!
God, it must be good. For comparison, Dylan has had 2 5-star albums. |
Picked it up a few days back and its good, its real good. Some of the sounds are pretty similar to their older stuff but there's nothing wrong with that!!!

I've now listened thru about 4 or 5 times, and though i like it in general, i'd still rank it just 5th best out of their 6 studio albums:
1 - Check Your Head 2 - Paul's Boutique 3 - Hello Nasty 4 - Ill Communication 5 - To the 5 Boroughs 6 - License to Ill But that's just one man's opinion |
Man, License to Ill gets no respect. I love the shiat out of it.

B-Boys fan since 87 ish. The new album grows on you. The more you listen, the better it gets.
Although one part makes me cringe. Adrock's opening verses in "Open Letter to NYC". |
I haven't picked this one up yet but plan to... Paul's Boutique is never far from my ears...

For me: Ill Communication Paul's Boutique Check Your Head To the 5 Boroughs License to Ill Hello Nasty Although 5 Boroughs could move up once I get used to it... |
Check Your Head
Ill Communication To the 5 Boroughs Paul's Boutique Hello Nasty License to Ill Not even the Beastie Boys themselves like License to Ill. |
1. Paul's Booty
2. Check Your Head 3. License to Ill 3. Ill Communication 4. Hello Nasty 5. To the 5 Boroughs "DANCE SUCKA!" |
With the exception of the first single, the new album sounds like throw-away B-sides, plus their hardcore political stance ruins it for me... I guess I just prefer politics to stay out of music because the way I see it, music is transcendent and when you start talking about current events, you pigeon-hole yourself into an identifiable time and place... I don't like to be reminded of bad people. places, events when I'm listening to music (esp. Bush, Iraq etc... I'd rather forget all the shit from the past 3 years) I'm not saying music has to be happy, (I love everything from the The Cure to the Pumpkins to the Counting Crows to Chopin for god's sake) but hearing 40 year-old white rappers deliver painfully bad rhymes about politics is sort of embarrassing. I understand and appreciate the fact that the Beasties come up with their own beats, but they're too old school to be considered foreward progress. That Rolling Stone 5 star review is bullshit.

The new album gives too much of a fuck. |
I don't understand what you're saying KWSN.
License to Ill was just pop. It was made to sell records. And it has. Every album after has been made to make people happy and for the sake of music. |
See, this is why "Check Your Head" is my favorite album:
Lyrically, it's "don't give a fuck", while musically it has the most integrity of any BB record |
Paul's Boutique
TT5B Ill Communication Licensed to Ill Hello Nasty Check Your Head |
There are some new tracks that I really like now.
Triple Trouble is straight up "Paul's Boutique" with that bass line. Sweet! I still love "Oh, Yeah". The synthesized robot voice introducing each MC before their verse is the best. |
Sounds like all there other music to me. It isnt bad but then need to change it up a little, and what is with all the political stuff. Oh well
|
I heard that if you put this CD in your computer. it starts to install stuff without you knowing. some type of protection but it could also fuck things up.
just a warnin! |
