I got paid for buying overpriced music!

Anybody remember this?

Music CD Settlement Article (snopes.com)

I signed up for this a while ago, just for the hell of it.

Today I got a check for $13.86 from "CD MAP Antitrust Litigation" based in MN. No clue why it came out to $13.86, and it certainly doesn't reflect how much I've probably overpaid in CD prices over the past 14 years, but still, it's nice to get a check!

Yep...I got mine yesterday, as well. And yes, the irony that I can't even buy a CD with it was not lost on me. I should imagine that the reason that the amount was so low is the number of people that responded to the suit. With X being the dollar amount of the settlement, and Y being the number of people to write a check to...X / Y - (attorney's fees) = a whopping $13.86. Oh well, $13.86 is $13.86.

Hmm I remember signing up for that settlement deal... Never got anything though. Who knows, maybe there's a check waiting for me when I get home.

$13.86 is not much, but it can keep me fed for a couple of days, and lunch is always a welcome freebie.

CD Anti-Trust case

Any one remember this from a while ago? If you had purchased a cd from around the late 80's to the late 90's you were entitled to a piece of the pie(I think they said around $20) if you registered with the site. Well I got me a check for 13 bucks today, anyone else get one?

I got mine. I read about it and registered. Nice surprise when it came in the mail.

I told quite a few people that they should register their names on the site, but I doubt any of them did.

Perhaps I'll take my $13 to buy some blank cds.

The vast majority of the CDs I buy, and I buy at least 2 a month, are under $10.

There's no such thing as an overpriced cd in high demand, anyway.

thirteen bucks. . . .not alot of money, but i suppose that wasn't the point of making them pay millions to thousands of people, it was to say "We're not gonna take it" and pay your absurd prices anymore.

Got mine as well. Not going to buy a cd with it, because its not enough. Now that we've Sued, what's our recourse? We have to take the price gouging we are getting. Whatever. This will pay for almost 2 days worth of bus rides for my girl and I...

Seriously, though, did the music industry drop the price of CDs any because of this lawsuite? I haven't bought one in a long time so I really don't know. It doesn't seem like the price has gone down any, though. I guess I just don't understand the point...

I had to take a minute and give a shout out to quadro2000...
I was moments away from throwing my check away when I remembered this thread and realized what it was...
It was about 3 x 5 and folded shut and it looked nothing like a check. more like junk mail... $13.86 isnt much but every little bit counts...
I wonder how much the trial lawyers got... They probably just got a check for $13.86.... Yeah... Thats probably right....

They probably want it to look fake banking on the fact that you won't cash it so the companies don't have to pay up. Bastards.

Can't believe it actually went through, if it went below $10 per person they were going to just invest the money in music programs, glad that it went to me instead.

Kind of ironic that the amount of the settlement isn't even enough to buy a new CD.

Got it...used it on two used CD's...that's how I beat the system...I only buy new releases in traditional record stores. All other music is bought at Used stores so the RIAA doesn't get any of my $$

If you are not going to do anything with the check then maybe you can donate it, DonateMyMusicCheck.com which is taking donations from CD price-fixing settlement check recipients for the Electronic Frontier Foundation(http://eff.org/), which is fighting for the rights of music downloaders and those being prosecuted.
