This thread is dedicated to The Flaming Lips
I've just discovered this amazing band, and was so moved that I listened to The Soft Bulletin and Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, back to back, several times! Their music has, warmth, feeling, and emotion. Their songs tell stories that make me think and wonder. This is something most bands these days are incapable of doing.
My favorite songs have to be: -Spoonful Weighs a Ton -Waitin' for a Superman -One More Robot/Sympathy 3000-21 -Do You Realize? I do not know what they remind me of... their songs are nothing like the progressive rock/metal I normally listen to, with the exception of "uncategorizable" bands like Godspeed You Black Emperor, Sigur Ros, Mogwai, etc. - and the Flaming Lips seem closer to this short list than to the rest of my playlist. Anyone else fall in love with this band? What do you think of them? What other bands have a similar feeling?

I'm not sure what i think. I have the 2 albums that you have said and i am still undicided. I guess they put on a hell of a live show, and would of loved to see them with beck. I like them then i dont. Its weird because when i got the albums, i loved them, and now i havent listened to many songs. I guess time will tell.

I saw the flaming lips in concert years ago. They opened for Stone Temple Pilots. They were pretty god awful live. The other oh, 6, people who actually showed up to see them open actually cried out 'You suck' often. I felt bad for em.

I've only listened to it three times because setting it up is so much trouble. It's not as good as it could be in my opinion but it's interesting. Part of the experience is that CD players will get out of sync, making the music slightly different each time. But what that really means is that you get these annoyingly slightly off beats sometimes. |

I fell in love with The Flaming lips upon hearing "Race For The Prize" the very first track of "The Soft Bulletin". Beautiful song. Great album.
Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots was also hit or miss for me, with the first half hittin' and the last half missin'.

Seems to be alot of mixed feelings so far.
As an album, the Soft Bulletin appeals to me more than Yoshimi, but when it comes to their earlier work, I found that the samples I listened to were nowhere near as good as the aforementioned two CDs. Zaireeka sounds like a really curious album.... I might check it out, just to see what its all about.
