In order to be cool on TFP, you must listen to...
Tool
Radiohead Glassjaw Opeth The Darkness Godspeed You! Black Emperor Aphex Theory A Perfect Circle Dream Theater Dashboard Confessional Ok, so you say what is the point of this topic? Just seems to me that everyone on this board listens to the same 10 bands. Is this really true, or do people just mention these bands to fit in here? Personally, I own albums by only 2 of the above artists, and I don't know anyone who listens to Glassjaw, Opeth or Dream Theater outside of this board. Any others we need to add to the list?

I love 3 of the bands you listed: Tool, A Perfect Circle and Radiohead. I have all of their cd's and love everyone. I also own 1 Dashboard Confesional cd but it's only average in my opinion.
As for the rest I've heard a couple of them but know next to nothing about them.

I was getting pretty scared there, didn't see any bands I even heard of, but then I saw Dream Theater. Whew!!
I always knew I was cool Actually, if you read enough of the threads in here, you need to add: The Beatles Led Zeppelin & Rush Avril Lavigne gets a lot of mentions in here too, but I don't think she's list-worthy

I should also add that although I love Tool, Radiohead and A Perfect Circle, in no way do I think anyone that dosn't, is not cool. Obviously everyone has their own likes and dislikes. And I'm sure if someone offered to pay me to listen to the bands listed here I'd sign right up. Getting paid to listen to music would be a dream come true. Hell, I already listen to Zeppelin almost daily, getting money for it would just be a bonus to an already sweet situation. |

Derwood's list:
Tool: a fine and innovative band Radiohead: A band which I despise to the core of my being for no reason I can pin down Glassjaw: One that sounds like it might be worth giving a listen Opeth & The Darkness: First I've ever heard of them (though they might have been in a thread and, because I've never heard of them, I just scanned past) Godspeed You! Black Emperor: Nothing I want to bother with. Aphex Theory: I heard they have an interesting video A Perfect Circle: Tool, Part 2. Good, but I like part 1 better. Dream Theater: Overly melodramatic, but insanely talented. A good listen. Dashboard Confessional: Never had the urge to listen to them. GOT's addendum: The Beatles, Led Zeppelin & Rush I think you have to have listened to these to be an adult, able to vote and drink. One that keeps popping up: The Mars Volta. I haven't heard anything yet, but I am looking for it. And, of course, to be truly cool in any context, you have to love Blue Öyster Cult. It's just the way things are.

Wow, I don't have any of those. Well, I have the Beatles, but none on Derwood's list. Nothing against those bands, but I feel proud.

well, Glassjaw is on the list because KWSN mentions them in nearly every post
but overall, i think the bands' appeal to internet forum frequenters is the same appeal that internet forums have -- slightly underground and slightly "intellectual". nearly any forum i've been on seems to love a fair amount of these bands, especially radiohead, a perfect circle, tool, and dream theater. why do i call these bands intellectual? well, i don't think they're very appealing at first listen, so listeners probably feel accomplished when they have acheived the acquired taste that is these bands. my likes from the list are tool, opeth, non-cheese dream theater, glassjaw, and song-oriented radiohead (i.e. not their recent ambient sounds junk). |

On the first list,Tool, and only Tool is in my collection. My flavors are heavy and punk. I do listen to other stuff, but I don't buy something I've only heard one song, I have to listen to the cd first before I make a decision, been burned too many times.
*edit... I guess since I only have cd's from 1 on that list, I'm only 10% cool. Last edited by absorbentishe; 01-21-2004 at 08:41 PM.. |

I own everything released (major label releases and some bottlegs) by every one of those bands but GY!BE, Dashboard Confessional, and Dream Theater. I think it's more likely those are some popular bands. Tool, Radiohead, Perfect Circle, The Darkness are all really popular. If you don't know anyone that listens to those, you must not know anybody.

i own both of a perfect circles cds but thats it.
i think saying that you are cool only if you listen to these bands is a little silly (no offence) because a lot of people have a lot of different tastes. i suspect if the list was done by someone else the bands would be totally differnet... not saying that the rest of the bands are not good i just havent gotten into them. some i am starting to listen to and liking though.

I am a huge Glassjaw(mercury was right about me ), Godspeed, Apex Theory, Darkness, Opeth, Radiohead, and tool fan and i shamelessly pimp the first two quite a bit... i own all albums by the first 5 on that list, all radiohead except hail to the theif and Lateralus and Aenima by Tool. I must say that i know a lot of people who like all of those bands outside the board... except Apex Theory, that's sort of a me thing...

To think anyone in this forum is even remotely cool, despite what they might listen to, is ludicrous.
