Favorite REM song?

Im not a real big fan, but I do like them for the most part. I was listening to this song The Sweetness Follows and I love it. I think it might be my favorite REM song, but Im not sure. Anyone else have a favorite REM song?

Tophat665 01-05-2004 05:55 AM

One of two:
"I Believe" from Pageant or
"The Sidewinder Sleeps Tonight" from Automatic

Depends on mood

Derwood 01-05-2004 06:35 AM

Wow, that's hard.

"World Leader Pretend" or "I Remember California" from Green

"Country Feedback" from Out of Time

"Swan Swan H" from Life's Rich Pageant

burnhm 01-05-2004 08:36 AM

I'm not a huge REM fan but I've always loved Nightswimming from the first time i heard it.

quadro2000 01-05-2004 10:04 AM

Really, anything from Automatic For The People will fit the bill, but I'll go for "Find The River."

present_future 01-05-2004 11:45 AM

I like "Losing My Religion."

GAHK! I heard about 10 seconds of that last night coming home from work and now I cant get rid of it. I dont mind earworms if the song is one I like, but I hate REM, especially that song. The ONLY REM song worth a damn, imho, is End of the World as We Know It (or whatever its called).

redlotuss9 01-06-2004 12:44 PM

Hope from Up or Country Feedback off of Out of Time

rockzilla 01-06-2004 07:53 PM

I can't pick one

So. Central Rain
Fall On Me
Finest Worksong
The One I Love
The Untitled song on 'Green'

Strelich 01-06-2004 09:45 PM

I would say either Electrolite (from New Adventures...) or Driver 8 (from Fables of the Reconstruction).

However, my favorite "almost REM" song would be "Photograph" which was sung by JMS and Natalie Merchant, written by the latter.

Jadey 01-07-2004 02:57 AM

Not a big REM fan, but I've always liked "Everybody Hurts". And "It's the End of The World" is a classic song.

high_way 01-07-2004 03:33 AM

man on the moon, its the end of the world, losing my religion, stand, everybody hurts, the great beyond and i am partial to their newie 'bad day'

The interesting thing about "Bad Day" was that apparently it was started in the mid-80s and eventually evolved into "It's The End Of The World." Their verses are very similar.

And the interesting thing about "Losing My Religion" is that it's one of the few mainstream hits featuring a mandolin as the lead instrument.

high_way 01-07-2004 11:42 PM

no i didnt know that about either of those songs quadro 2000, thanks. i will have to listen to them more closely when i next play them.

MahlerIsGod 01-08-2004 02:47 AM

Simple: Belong on Out Of Time

Perhaps more accurate to say they're practically the same song.

Me neither, but I first heard it just after going skinny dipping at night. Someone played it in the car on the way home, and I thought it was really cool.

{Anti-Punk} 01-12-2004 07:42 PM

I don't really like them, but I really like "Losing My Religion."

Same here. Don't really know why I like it. But everytime I hear it, it always gets stuck in my head for a couple of hours.

mml 01-13-2004 02:50 PM

How is it possible that so many people don't really like R.E.M.? I absolutely love them, and it would be very difficult to pick a favorite, but some of my favs are:

Carnival of Sorts (Chronic Town cd)
Radio Free Europe, Shaking Through (Murmur cd)
Rockville, So. Central Rain (Reckoning cd)
Driver 8, Wendell Gee (Fables of the Reconstruction cd)
I Believe, Fall On Me (Lifes Rich Pageant)
Exhuming McCarthy, End of the World..., King of Birds (Document)
You Are the Everything, "Untitled #11" (Green)
Radio Song, Belong (Out of Time)
Nightswimming, Find the River (Automatic for the People)
New Test Leper, Bittersweet Me (New Adventures in Hi-Fi)

That's 20 songs already, I should just stop here :)

klt2 01-16-2004 08:29 AM

Lotus, Diminish, E-Bow the Letter, Undertow, You, Circus Envy, Sweetness Follows, Find the River . . .

. . . to name some of the more recent.

actionoreos 01-16-2004 08:58 AM

This is hard.. REM has many a great songs, many of which are my favorites.. but I'll say "The One I Love" because for me that's the most fun to cover.

forseti-6 01-16-2004 06:46 PM

I'd have to say Nightswimming, End of the World and Everybody Hurts

Silverbrain 01-17-2004 09:21 AM

Country Feedback
Find the River
Imitation of Life
Cayahoga (sp?) Unplugged 2 !!

I agree.

Redjake 01-17-2004 11:23 AM

R.E.M. is one of my favorites bands. My hands-down favorite is the immortal "Orange Crush." It was played so much on the radio during my childhood (and by my mom). Whenever I hear that song, it reminds me of my grungy childhood. The song is perfection. Melodic!

I also like "Losing My Religion," "Stand," and "It's the End of the World As We Know It." I know that one by heart. Fun to sing to if you know the lyrics. "To the One I Love" and "What's the Frequency, Kenneth" are excellent too.

EbolaVirus 01-18-2004 07:57 AM

What's the Frequencey, Kenneth?

FoolThemAll 01-18-2004 10:45 AM

Having heard their 8 most well known songs, give or take a song, my pick is "Bang and Blame". Either "Losing My Religion" or "Nightswimming" would be second.

Spektr 01-18-2004 03:32 PM

Nightswimming has been my favorite REM song for a long time

Tophat665 01-18-2004 05:22 PM

So many young people here! My goodness. I had to get down 10 posts before anyone when back before Pageant. Heck, even I didn't go that far back, but as long as I/m posting, let me add a few:

Harborcoat or Little America (Reckoning)
Sitting Still (Murmur)
Ages of You (DLO)
Auctioneer (Fables - a truly awesome album)
Lightning Hopkins (Document)

After Document, they got really hit and miss for me. I loathe Green and Out of Time, and Automatic and Monster seem to me to be attempts (occasionally successful) to recapture their energy of old.

diddagirl 01-18-2004 10:32 PM

"everybody hurts"

White Cluster 01-19-2004 09:52 AM

"whats the frequency kenneth"

bt8624 02-10-2004 08:56 PM

hmmmmm
the sidewinder sleeps tonight or nightswimming

clifclav 02-11-2004 07:32 AM

Don't want to make all the old farts on here feel even older but Murmur is 21 years old now. I sometimes still think of REM like they just came out.

The first time I heard them was a college friend of my sisters playing Pageant and not believing that there was music that was that good. I immediately blew all my birthday money on the cassette. When I discovered that they had stuff already out I was one happy adolescent.

Favorites: Camera, These Days, Most all of Automatic for the People

Spartak 02-11-2004 01:04 PM

E-bow the letter or losing my religion, both songs rock hard.
