Wow...I've been listening to FZ for a long time. This guys music is unparralled. It does something for me, I can't get enough of it. Nobody comes close to the amount of music he has recorded.(With the exception of like Duke Ellington or some other bigband dudes...) No album is the same as the next. If there ever was something called original, it was him and his tunes. Anybody else here feel the same way I do? Zappa was a genius. I've looked high and low to find anything like his music, but have not found anything close. Basically this thread is for any Zappa freak to go nuts. What songs do you like? Ever seen him? How many albums do you have? Have you ever seen any of the original members side projects....

When I was a kid we had a pool room in the basement with a horrible old record player. I was a little snot back then and I wanted to listen to records while I 'played' pool. The only one that my sisters let me have was a FZ 45, because they bought it and hated it. A side was Dancin' Fool, B side was Baby Snakes. I was 6 years old and thought the guy was nuts for having spoons to stick up his nose. I thought a Libra was a kind of animal. FZ and Ernie (with his trusty rusty telescope) were my most listened to music when I was a kid, b/c that's all I had.

My fave: The Muffin Man.

Ha! I could see how Zappa's lyrics could confuse an impressionable youth...let alone a congressmen or two!

maybe that was a precursor for the matrix. there is no spoon...in your nose! :D i have spoons for in my mouth, and i have soup. and i have EVERY frank zappa album. i rul3.

You have all 83 (at last count) Zappa albums? I'm impressed.
It's a pain to locate, but shortly after Frank died A&E's Biography series did a FZ biography; it's worth the trouble to find it, there's lots of really neat stuff; interviews with Frank shortly before he died, film clips when he was younger, a good live cut of "black napkins", but the best thing is Frank telling about being appointed Minister of Culture for Czechloslovakia (NO SHIT, it really happened) and how the first Bush administraton threatened to cut off aid if they had to deal with him; it's HILARIOUS.

I miss Frank Zappa; as a musician, but also as a Human Being; he was a rare breed; a person who didn't try to bullshit everyone.

Now Ya gotta get 'em all on vinyl!...There is an amazing difference between vinyl and a remastered CD...Perfect example, listen to Apostrophe or One Size Fits All. Vinyl is so rich...there are sonic qualities of the music that are lost when these albums were remastered...when I first heard Apostrophe on CD after listening to it on vinyl for so many years, It was like hearing something totally diifferent. If you have access to a record player, check it out..this goes for any kind of music that was originally relaeased on vinyl.

I just got said A&E biography off of Kazaa,...it took like a week to get , but now its mine! I remembered when it first aired...like 95 or something...and I've been searching for it since...what a treat it is!

Sorry, I gave my turntable away in the '80's. I've always owned the best audio equipment I could afford, up to and including a pair of Ohm Model F speakers ($4000/pair in the '70's). I don't have any love for vinyl; it's WAY too delicate, and I don't see any sonic advantage to it; the fact that I've worked in the machining trade for 40 years might have something to do with my hearing problems, though.

I guess what I was trying to say is that, when an album is remastered by someone other than the artist, the original idea loses something. Especially in the case of Zappa's music..You know how nit picky he was about every aspect of his music, and his musians for that matter. I don't know...this is a highly debatably topic that basically boils down to personal preference. Thats a topic for another thread...anyway whatever Zappa ya got, whether on CD or tape or vinyl, it's all still worth listening to!

The first time Apostrophe was released remastered '87 they added reverb where there had been none and generally fucked up the mix. In '93 they release a 'FZ approved' cd. That's the one I have. It sounds just like the record but without the hiss, pops, etc. (Rycodisc RCD 10519)

FRANK ZAPPA totally kicks the ass. I have every one of his albums. What still suprises me is he went to Juliard. He was a real musical genius. It was a very sad day when he passed away.

Zappa was brilliant, a truly amazing guy.

My first experience with Frank was Joe's garage in college, but the album that really turned me on to him had to be Sheik Yerbouti. Bobby Brown and Broken hearts are for assholes are two of the funniest songs and the music is exquisite. My favorite song also is Muffin Man.

Sorry, I've got to disagree; "Peaches en Regalia" is quintessential Zappa, followed closely by "Black Napkins".

My first experience with Frank Zappa was 1968 or '69. My brother bought a poster from our local head shoppe that featured Frank Zappa sitting on a toilet, and it said "Phi Zappa Crappa."
