Hey guys, hows it going?

Me and some of my close friends are taking a road trip across country from Michigan to Las Vegas we will be driving the whole way in a RV my buddy Owns... However, We are looking for some good music to listen to while making our trek across the country...

We are basically looking for good tunes that would really get your thumbs tapping on the wheel and really just look around and appreciate the sites around you..

None of us are really to into Metal or Hard Rock type of music. Kind of looking for some songs that soung like Dave Matthews Band, Tom Petty, Kenny Chesney... Ya know' that type of vibe (haha yea i know broad range )

Anyways, Any suggestions you guys and gals might have would be greatly appreciated Thanks bunches in advance and have a good night..

OK, guys...there are plenty of threads about driving/road trip music...but none that really apply to my specific situation...but I'll make this one work.

The lowdown:

Two good friends and I are heading south to Cali for spring break. We're going to the Bay Area and Santa Cruz. Driving from Oregon, we're gonna be on the road for about fifteen hours on the way down and the way back. So I'm looking for music for looong stretches of road and short hops as well. I'm looking for music that won't put us to sleep. I'm looking for music that has a "beachy" or "California" vibe--"sunny day" music.

Now, here's where our situation gets a bit different...

We have 60GB of iPod space going on the trip...and only about 10GB already pre-decided. So go crazy.

There are, however, some distinct rules:
1) No metal.
2) No rap.
3) No emo.
4) No country.
(This isn't saying I dislike these genres, these are just the ground rules regarding music the three of us have laid down.)

All three of us show a distinct preference for rock, and I know I'll be playing my favorite "road trip" music--Travis's "The Man Who." Though it isn't "sunny day" music it has a distinct "driving" flavor.

Recommend away.

It's ~9.5hrs from Corvallis to San Jose at 65MPH average. Stopping at Shasta screws that up but is probably beautiful with current weather.

Oh, Avoid 101 & 17 for the trip to Santa Cruz. Try to take 1 on the coast for one direction, then maybe 9 through Boulder Creek and Los Gatos for the other. Good breweries, restaurants, people...

My friend travels down there often--we're going to visit his uncle.

We're planning on stopping in Ashland to stretch our legs, walk around Lithia Park and get a good breakfast. It's going to be a longer drive because we're stopping to visit people in Sacramento.

Can't go wrong with Foghat's 'Slow Ride, some Jimi Hendrix, Lynyrd Skynrd, and that 'Low Rider' song. And if you can find some music by The Cruel Sea (especially 'The Honeymoon is Over' and 'Better Get A Lawyer Son' they'd be good too.

Unless you don't like blues, that is.

And 5 minutes before you get there you've gotta play Tuesday's Gone by Skynyrd.

(just think of ur roadtrip, and then remember the scene from Waynes World). You said no emo, but do u include Screamo in that category lol. What about hardcore. Whatever, the new Underoath album kicks ass.

Classic rock is my fav for road trips. Everyone knows the songs and can start singing along. It just seems to help the time fly by. Or for California surfer type stuff...Sublime, Slightly Stoopid, and The Expendables are good bets.

Wow, this is an old thread! I know I posted this somewhere else, but if it's time to travel then it's time for SCAN SONG!!!

ScanSong is a radio game that you can play in the car with my friends and family on long drives. Since I’ve never encountered anyone else who plays this game, I like to incorrectly surmise that I invented it. Here are the basics:

ScanSong obviously works much smoother with the automatic SCAN button instead of the manual SEEK button found on most car radios. Once the SCAN button has been engaged, the radio will stop approximately five seconds on each station before moving on.

The Object Of The Game is to be the first person to call out the name of the artist heard on each radio station in the SCAN before it moves to the next station. The first person correctly naming the artist is awarded one point and play resumes when the radio stops on the next station. Some extra rules include the following:

1) Once an artist has been correctly named for a particular song, then that song is “out of play” for the remainder of the game (unless a different version exists with a different artist).
2) If an artist is not correctly named, then that song remains in play until it is eventually named.
3) No points are awarded if an artist is named after the SCAN has left that station. However, the song remains in play if it should happen to come around again on the dial (even if someone stupidly called out the correct artist too late).
4) Any player’s guess can be refuted by another player’s challenge. There are several ways to resolve a challenge/dispute, including stopping the SCAN on that particular station until the DJ eventually names the artist, or simply duking it out until you’ve had enough and want to move on with your lives.
5) In the case of classical music, the composer is recognized to be the artist.
6) In the case of holiday or folk music, players may wish to allow the song title to come into play.
7) Jazz afficionados are expected to be smart enough to find something better to do.
8) In the case of artists having several iterations (Eric Clapton, for God’s sake), the level of scrutiny is flexible and may vary from vehicle to vehicle. The driver is recognized as the ultimate authority in settling the game’s degree of difficulty. In other words, if someone guesses Paul McCartney for “Hey Jude,” that’s your problem.
9) If the game needs spicing up, God forbid, players may wish to invoke the “Magic Artist” rule. In this optional version, an artist is designated as the “Magic Artist,” and the SCAN is temporarily suspended whenever that artist’s songs are encountered. Everyone in the vehicle must then sing along with the remainder of that song loudly and heartily before the SCAN can resume. Anyone refusing to sing deserves to be thrown out the window at high speeds. Also, anyone nominating George Michael as a “Magic Artist” similarly deserves to be thrown out the window at high speeds.
10) All players are expected to remain on their honor and only offer guesses for songs and artists they truly know. The purpose of the game is to have fun, not score points. Anyone who guesses “Kenny Chesney” at every country song simply because they know the other players hate country music and can’t possibly refute the guess has obviously missed the point of this game and deserves to be thrown out the window at high speeds.
11) DO NOT attempt to play this game while driving through Mississippi unless you are a dual expert in Rap and Country (because that's ALL you'll find up and down the dial).

That's HILARIOUS. I think we could definitely play that game. My best guy friend would probably get very mad at me, though, because I am the Trivia Queen (and therefore memorize silly things like artist, song title, etc). But if we're in a place with a lot of classic rock stations he'll kick my ass.

Definitely gonna have to suggest playing that.

watch out for utah if you play scan song. lotta crappy stations. i know it's not on the coast but i'm just speaking generally.

back to recommendations. some of this stuff is not too beachy but is either good driving music or california related.

ambulance ltd is catchy upbeat indie rock.
pavement is very good too, coming out of stockton, CA.
grandaddy, modesto's finest, is a good suggestion from earlier.
calexico has a southwestern sound.
autolux is a great emerging rock band from los angeles. if nothing else, check these guys out.
black heart procession, from san diego, is a somewhat mellower suggestion.
beck's new cd isn't out yet but we've all heard it. seems like it would go well at a beach party. and he is from LA.
herb alpert...now there is some sunny stuff.
curtis mayfield (superfly) is another respectable choice.

The Lynard Skynard (sp?) live album is really good. I only have it on the old vinyl tho, however if it was on cd id rock it on a roadtrip.

The Grateful Dead is a great road trip band.

American Beauty, Aoxomoxoa (sp? hah), Workingman's Dead, etc.. are great albums. The guys wrote an incredible amount of songs.

Of course the best song is "Truckin'". Just don't get much better than that.

I dont know how well this'll go over, but the only CD I take with me on every trip, road or otherwise is The Urge - Receiving The Gift Of Flavor. It's heavier ska, but not too heavy. Really good music that'll keep you moving!

I'm kind of sad that the new Queens of the Stone Age album comes out on Tuesday, after we've left and lost our ability to put it on our iPods. The CD player in the car we're taking is kind of...broken.

TBS and SoCo are really good, assuming u already like them. I cant see someone whos not into that kinda stuff really digging it on a roadtrip.. Although thats the kind of stuff me and my guys are playin on the way to the Jersey Shore next month. Although im not really a country fan; on a nice day with the windows down some country sounds pretty good.

Reminds me of a trip to socal with a buddy. I'd worked on my car and its stereo for a week to get ready. Everything ran great, sounded great. I had to work the morning of our trip but everything was prepared. Eleven a.m., I walk out of the air conditioned store into a blazing hot summer day. Perfect! Get in the car, turn on the stereo and *KaPop!* Blew an output transistor. Just like that we were reduced from state of the art tunes to a desperation BiMart boombox that poked our elbows or fell on the floor at every corner.

Fate happens. The boombox turned out to be a lifesaver. Our poor financial planning left us short of food and gasoline funds. We rolled into Redding on fumes and we were STARVING! We found a pawn shop downtown that gave us $40 for the boombox. Just enough to stuff ourselves at a buffet and get back to Corvallis comfortably.

Several months later I drove back through Redding and recovered that boombox. He charged me ~$5 premium for the loan which put it into the "extreme bargain" category. For a couple years that thing was my lucky charm. Until it was stolen along with the car holding it. Fickle fate.
