Recommend me some golden oldies!
 

Hello there fellow music lovers!

I've always listened to and enjoyed old music, but I never really had an urge to pay attention to exactly what I was listening to. That is, until my sister decided that she had had enough and refused to listen to "the sunday morning oldies show" on my local radio station (my dad listens to it when he gets groceries/runs errands).

This means that I no longer get my golden oldies fix! And worst of all, I have no idea what the song titles are!

So please, PLEASE recommend song titles (even if it's as obscure as "So-and-so's entire XXXXX album)

BTW hope i'm not repeating a thread.

How old? 60's 70's 80's...
The single best oldie (to me, at least) is Heatwave, by Martha Reeves and the Vandellas. Second, Be My Baby by the Ronettes.
I have tons of oldies...some pretty obscure, like Quicksilver Messenger Service, Bad Company, Seals and Crofts, Uriah Heep. I have 3 Dog night, compilations from the 60s thru the 80's with songs from the likes of Foghat, Richard Marks, early Michael Jackson.....I've got Doobie Brothers, early Bruce Springsteen, Heart....I'll just stop now :D

All those periods are fine.

Aretha Franklin, "Young, Gifted and Black" the entire album.

I'm on an Aretha kick at the moment.

Anything by Jonathon Richman and The Modern Lovers. Also anything by Jonathon solo, although that gets us up to the present day.

roxy music: the first 3 albums (roxy music, for your pleasure, country life)

soft machine: the first 3 albums are fucking brilliant.

o yeah: i am listening to pharoah sander's "the creator has a master plan" which is from the mid 60s, an excellent record, but for some reason i dont think of it as an "oldie"--maybe because it never got radio play in the first place. actually, none of this stuff really did. ah well.

Oh my God, I feel old....

I'm not out of my 30s, but to me "oldies" means 1930-1950 or so. Then a period of "Oldies Rock" until about 1965, and after that it's "Classic Rock" (to me, anyway) up until about 1980.

So, if you're thinking "Oldies" in my sense of the word, you can't go wrong with anything by any of the following:

Frank Sinatra
The Andrews Sisters
Benny Goodman
Nat King Cole
Bing Crosby
Tony Bennett
Duke Ellington


If you're thinking Oldies as in old rock, then you should definetely go to:

Elvis
Chuck Berry
Jerry Lee Lewis
Buddy Holly
Little Richard


If you're thinking Oldies as in what I call "Classic Rock"

Beatles
Beatles
Beatles

Also, depending on your tastes, CSN(&Y), Pink Floyd, the Byrds, Led Zeppelin, Cream, Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan and on and on and on.....

I'd really recommend checking out the list of number 1 songs. Granted there will be songs on there that now seem like clunkers, but it will give you a sense of the big artists. Odds are, they were big for a reason.

EDIT: Note that I all but completely ignored jazz, unless you count Goodman and Ellington (which to me are really Big Band, not jazz). If you want info on that, then that's a whole new kettle of fish

Joe Strummer was the lead guitar and vocal of The Clash Band when they played that song in their concert. Here is a FACT. The White riot song was made as an OST of the documentary film Joe Strummer: The Future Is Unwritten. They kept on talking about this documentary film but I have no exact idea about this. I only know their music but about the film I have no idea.

more to the OP's question, anything by Simon and Garfunkel, CCR, the Eagles, the Doobies, Huey Lewis & the News, the (duh) Beatles and Beach Boys, and early Kenny Loggins should be right up your alley.
