auditioning for a semi-famous band

Ever heard of Nightwish? They kicked out their singer a year ago and have been hunting for her replacement since March.

I sent in an audition CD a few months ago; at last count they had over 1200 demos. I am sure mine has been passed over, but I though I would share the songs I used as my audition.

EDIT: link removed.

These all are their songs; the ones with acoustic guitar, I played and sang; the ones with full backing tracks were provided by James Van Nguyen for me to sing over.

My original stuff is at www.myspace.com/voiceofmeliesa if you are interested.

Thanks for listening! I know I am not around here much, but I remember this being a really supportive forum with a wide array of cool people. Seems I remembererd correctly.

very nice.. funny.. I was just playing nightwish on our college radio station and talking about their search for a new singer last night. i'd almost say I prefer your singing on sleeping sun to the original. i'm a sucker for the key change in that song. just take it easy on the reverb in walking in the air. ;p you are very articulate (people tell me that too, although not related to my singing ability or rather lack thereof); i am actually taking notice of the lyrics whereas i usually just ignore them if i can even understand them. in tarja's case, i think the unintelligible lyrics have something to do with the opera thing, i mean, people don't actually go to the opera and have any clue what anyone is saying, do they? that's what the whole stage production is for, to tell you what the hell is going on. i dunno, nightwish at the house of blues is the closest i ever got to opera.

anyway, no matter who is picked by nightwish, its sure to spark outrage among the fans, so if you're not at least you would be spared that. ;p the thing about tarja is, not only was her operatic singing pretty great, but her "normal" singing was amazing too, and we only just barely got a taste of that on Once, and I think that was their best album yet. that's the biggest tragedy of her being "relieved of duty" imo. now she's gonna go off and sing operatic christmas carols in argentina and we may never hear it again.

You have a very nice voice and definitely deserve further examination by nightwish. I think your voice will fit nice with their music. I'll agree with sensical though when he says being the replacement can suck. I have personal experience being a replacement drummer.

Thanks for listening. Although, I must say, I am certain I will not be replacing Tarja. I sent my demo months ago and have received no word. However, the experience of recording their music, hanging out on their forum, and meeting online many other excellent singers, has been very rewarding, plus it has led to potentially another opportunity, one perhaps better suited to my voice.

Ever heard of a band called "Elis?"

Haha... apparently someone else really liked my cover of "Nemo" by Nightwish... they dubbed my demo version of it over the original Nightwish video.

I love Nightwish. Saw them live once and they blew me away. BuDDaH knows the band personally... wonder if something could be hooked up

hm, I doubt it. They listen to every demo, and would have received mine in July at the latest.

Unless it got lost in the mail.... I suppose I could send another one. Deadline is end of November. However, I have heard some of the other girls auditioning, and they are spectacular. Maybe I am just not the "right" voice for them.

Halx it is nice to connect with you here again. I wish I had taken the opportunity to hang out before you scooted off to the east coast.. are you still there?

Ha it seems everyone is looking for a singer. Therion just announced that they are one soprano short for their upcoming tour. I'm sending something in to them as well, along a more operatic vein.

I recorded my Elis demo last week, and this week I'll finish it up. Still debating on whether I should send Nightwish another demo.
