Best Concert Memories
Do any of you have any memories from shows that you consider just fucken awesome. i have a couple (obviously).
The momory i would say was the ebst was at warped tour 2001. About 40% of the females had their tits painted, so were walking around without shirts. Any Floridians know how the weather is around here, unpredictable. It started to downpour hard right in the middle of Floggy Mollys set, and as im Jigging my drunken ass off in the big-assed circle pit i see tons of chicks trying their damnest to try and cover themself. ahh memories. another great memory would have to be at the Zero-Boys show about 6 months ago, I got my nose busted like hell in the pit, leaking blood like some kind of fucked up blood leaking faucet. After i circled the pit 3 or 4 more times i walked outside, some random chick asked if she could take pictures and snapped a whole role of film on my ass. about a month latter one of my friends pointed out pictures of me in a central florida punk mag, all bloodied, smiling, giving a nice big thumbs up. <--like that but bloodier so, any of you want to share?

I've been going to maybe a half dozen concerts a year since 1990 or so. My best concert memories
Woodstock '94: This was just a few miles up the road from where I live, so no way I was going to miss it. I got there around noon on Friday and there were tents everywhere. I set my tent up in front of the stage where there were a bunch of tents already. After a while I decided that if I wanted to get any sleep, it wasn't going to be in front of the main stage so I moved my tent away from the stage. Friday was pleasant and there were a bunch of minor acts - Rollins Band, Jackyl, Sheryl Crow that were pretty good. When I went to look for my tent in the dark, there were now thousands of tents where there had been only a few. I finally found my tent though. Saturday was pleasant too, until it rained for a while in mid-afternoon. Then people making mud slides turned the grounds into a giant mud pit. Crosby Stills & Nash finished up early evening then there was a long delay where the stage went black. After about an hour NIN went on stage all covered in mud. They played anyway, and they rocked. By the time they finished, their stage set was just about destroyed. I thought they were the best act there. Metallica was on after them but I wasn't that interested. About 2:00 I got startled awake by explosions. Aerosmith was just finishing with a fireworks show. By Sunday morning everything was mud and smelled terrible since the toilets had not been cleaned and were now upside down in the mud. I wandered around for a while then decided I really had enough and went home. Somehow, I managed to stay relatively dry and not thrown in a mud pit. I still have some Woodstock cash kicking around here somewhere. Second concert: NIN in Albany in Dec 1994. After Woodstock, I wasn't going to miss this. I talked a friend that had gone to other concerts with me into going. I think I was probably the only person there over 40 other than arena staff. :-) The line up was Marilyn Manson, Jim Rose Circus and NIN. I didn't care too much for Marilyn Manson. The Jim Rose Circus was crazy. NIN rocked again, better this time since they had a real stage set and lighting. At one point some 300 lb guy landed in seats just in front of me. After a while he must have gotten bored so he got up and left, taking the seats with him :-). A bit later I saw these two seats being waved around near the stage and then thrown on stage. When NIN finished, I hung around for the encore. After about 15 minutes, someone announced that someone had thrown a shoe and hit the drummer in the head, giving him a concussion. No encore, show over. That was about the last concert my friend went with me to. He figured I was too hardcore, too crazy, or something :-) Third concert: Woodstock '99. I was hoping it would be back in my towm, but the town didn't really want another Woodstock, so I had to drive a few hours to get there. I got there around noon on Thursday and staked my tent in the camping area. This time they at least pretended to have the tents organized. Thursday again was minor acts. It was bright sun and high 90's to 100+ all weekend except at night when it was maybe 90. Friday, Saturday and Sunday had a bunch of good bands. Saturday night got really crazy. Limp Bizkit was up early Saturday evening and I think their purpose was to incite a riot. Their sound kept getting cut and there were people being crushed into the sound towers. There were somewhere around 200,000 people there and a huge number of them started throwing empty water bottles across the field, then a few minutes the bottles would be returned. After Korn finished, I decided I'd had enough and headed back to my tent. On the way back, there was a bunch of people who seemed to be having a huge mock battle and it was very windy. I made it back to my tent. After a little while I woke up with the wind blowing strong, lots of racket, and people rushing around. Being slightly dazed, I wondered if Armageddon was here. Sunday morning, things were slightly back to normal and some people were leaving. I hung around until Jewel finished. By this time I had gone all weekend on about 8 hours sleep and was not looking forward to fighting traffic out of there on Monday morning so headed out right after that, missing out on the Sunday night riot. The drum circles with people pounding on 55 gallon drums day and night were crazy too. The early morning raves were entertaining. After that, I went to Ozzfest for 2 or 3 years, and that was entertaining until it turned into basicall ryap metal bands. So now I mostly go to concerts about 1.5 hours away. Once in a while my wife will go with me, if it's a Crosby Still and Nash concert, or a Yanni concert :-) |

Huh. I can't match Woodstock, but we did get to see Girlyman last year when they played our church. They are awesome live, in perfect harmony, tickets were $15 each, and I got to sleep with Ty backstage afterwards.
Ok, maybe that last part was just wishful thinking. If you've seen Girlyman perform live, you know what I'm talking about. Gilda

Metallica 2004: Hetfield called the group I was with (about 8 of us) the "crazy f*ckers in the balcony*"
Tea Party 2004: Jeff Martin, playing in a 120 year old venue, "let's wake up some ghosts", leading into Temptation. The first chord of the heavy bit shook dust from every surface in the room. Awesome moment. Nine Inch Nails 2006: Whole crowd singing along to Hurt, causing Reznor to stop and smile... Pearl Jam 2006: Crowd singing to Betterman and Daughter. |

I was at the "Tribute to Dimebag Darrell" show in Chicago after his death. Anthrax played a cover of "Fucking Hostile" with Vinnie Paul on the drums. It was his first show after the shooting. I'm not sure, but I think it might have been John Bush's last show with the band before Joey Belladona was brought back.

I will volunteer to be the official "old guy" of this thread. I love most types of music, but always seem to come back to classic rock. I graduated from HS in '77.
I sort of qualify as one of those fanatical fans of Springsteen. In September 2000, my 16 year old son and I travelled to Fargo for a Springsteen concert. I figured that we had a better chance of getting close to the stage there than in St Paul, Milwaukee, or Chicago. It was my son's first concert ever, but he was not really into music like I was at his age. We managed to get into the general admission area closest to the stage, and for most of the concert we were right up front and center. My son got caught in with a group of Canadian kids who were jumping around, really into it, and he had a ball. Unbelievable concert, and my kid seemed to develop an appreciation for the genre as well. It was my best concert experience ever.

The Replacements' last show...........one by one, they handed off their instruments to the roadies (the replacement Replacements), and they were gone forever. *sigh*

Bruce Springsteen- Stone Pony, asbury park - 1987 - bruce the way he was meant to be seen- small venue with rabid fans... pretty much any springsteen show seen in NJ would rank up at the top of my list.
Paul Simon - Central Park - 1991 -Killer show... Grateful Dead - any show in the early 80s... just good times... there have been sooo many great shows....

Good Friday, 1972(or was it '71?): Joe Cocker at Cobo Hall in Detroit. Leon Russell and Chris Stainton led the ass-kickingest blues band ever compiled, and my absolute favorite blues singer growled for hours! December 1976: The Who at the Pontiac Silverdome. This was the first of several times I've seen my favorite all-time act. The Dome was absolutely frigid that night and I had the flu for most of the week. My girlfriend slipped and twisted her ankle getting out of the van (about 3/4 of a mile out from the stadium!). My friend Kenny and I joined hands to form a saddle and we delivered her to her seat, and back again. In between, The Who tore up the night! Comerica Park, 2005: I finally get to see the Rolling Stones... from the 6th row! Incredible music and energy for ANY band of ANY age! Too bad Maroon 5 sucked so bad as an opener. I've seen a bunch of shows, large and small: Aerosmith at the Allen Park Civic Arena before they went huge... seen 'em 2 more times since. The Cinderella Ballroom and the Eastown Theatre provided many great nights of music and mayhem John Mayall, The Segal-Schwall Blues Band, Rory Gallagher.... this generation has no one to compare. |

According to my friends, going backstage and smoking up with Kottonmouth Kings on my 22nd birthday (I was so drunk, and whatever else, I don't remember getting up on stage and diving off 3 or 4 times throughout the concert), and apparently I forced myself backstage, but they didn't kick me out once I was back there. That was another one of those nights I walked home, and everyone wondered what the fuck I'd been up to, and I can't remember.
Concert memories I can remember. Rabbit In The Moon... Vibing to the music and then out of no where realizing that the "singer" is in a crazy bunny outfit standing next to me shooting a flame thrower into the air above our heads (best concert I've ever been to!). Went to see Moby, and Rabbit In The Moon made the show! |
