DJ Shadow - The outsider {leaky]

DJ Shadow's newest full length album (since 2002) The Outsider, is coming out soon for retail, Sept 6th, I believe.

I've listened to a few tracks of it already and it's a bit different (although his stuff in general is different from other stuff) than his previous stuff but I like it, in a different manner. There's quite a bit more vocals on it, with e-40, q-tip, david banner, and a few more. When I first heard about that, I was afraid that it would sound totally different and that he was trying to appeal to a larger, or more trendier audience.
While yes, it is different, it stills has that shadowesque style to it, that you can't put your finger on it, but you know it's there.

My favorite track is called 'you made it' (featuring Chris Brown) One of my favorite songs by him.

Anyone else take a listen to it ?

catcha back on the flipside,

Thanks for the heads up. I've always enjoyed his stuff, especially his last album.

(BTW I really enjoyed Middlesex)

There's 16 tracks, with 10 of them have artists making guest appearances. However, on one of those tracks that i listened to, the one with q-tip, his voice doesn't dominate the track. There's a couple of them too, like the broken levee blues, that sample the vocals from old records, like what he did in the past.

There's a couple politically themed tracks on here including the broken levee blues. Thankfully, DJ Shadow doesn't end up sounding forced on those tracks, like most other recent artists have when they do politically related or motivated tracks.

avernus - I just finished middlesex a week or so ago, I enjoyed it too (is there a thread on here about the book ?)

catcha back on the flipside,
will.

i heard some negative early reviews of it

i think some people want him to keep sampling funk 45s forever
people were complaining about david banner and company
it seems like they are trying to separate mainstream and underground artists, but i don't always think manistream = bad all the time. i'd say it's bad only about half of the time, in fact.
and that last david banner single "Run" had the coolest instumental loop...even if the original lyrics were essentially pornographic.

anyway, it's totally subjective, but i'm pretty open minded going into it.

The album is a complete mess. He doesn't know what he wants it to be so it ends up all over the place. Part hyphy part indie rockesque.

Past albums aside, and judging this for what it is, it's a mediocre album at best, and if it didn't have the DJ Shadow name attached to it I honestly believe people wouldn't give it a second listen.

The first half of the album is horrible. I can't stand hyphy and crunk. The second half is a whole lot better but still nothing special.

I've no problem with people experimenting with their style of music or going in new directions with their work, but it's as if he forgot how to make an album, and instead we are presented with an absolute mess.

Hey, I've heard that new album is pretty different... And apparently, the reception of the new songs live has been ecstatic, so I'm pretty excited. I know Shadow's experimenting with different genres within hip-hop, so I understand if it's not for everyone, or anyone expecting more of Endtroducing... That said, how'd you all get the album so early? I'm still waiting till September 19...

I guess I should listen to it again to get the whole opinion, but I'm glad I didn't buy it. I couldn't even make it through the first track, but of course I can't stand hip hop anyway. I don't particularly like Funky Skunk (some parts are still great, the hip hop parts are meh at best).

I would think someone who likes hip hop and past DJ Shadow albums will like this album. I'll stick with listening to Endtroducing (still hasn't grown old), and keep my eye out for his next album and see if he continues with the hip hop, or throws some other twist in there (even though I don't like this album, I still look forward to what he may come out with; that's what I like about Shadow, his willingness to explore).

Oh, and Jennimal, it's the magic of "the Internets".
