Car Insurance, what do you pay/drive?

Got this idea from the "Advice on sport cars for an 18 y.o." thread. So, how much do you pay for insurance?

I'm 20 years old and have had my G2 for 10 months (full license in ontario is your G, so i'm still a rookie I guess). I drive a 1990 mercury sable GS and pay $184.10 a month, canadian, to be the primary driver on it. Originally I wasn't even going to have a car cause State Farm was trying to stick me with some "compulsory insurance rule". This rule basically stated that if a car(my case) or driver was not insured for a long time, then their insurance rates would be huge; mine was gonna be just over $400 a month for liability only.

But I am also an engineering student, and a membership with an ontario association got me a special group deal through the Personal Insurance Company. They never mentioned this compulsory insurance rule, so I was off to the races. I realize that I probably pay a pretty good rate compared to some others out there, so i'm curious, how much do y'all pay?

Oh, and I also took young drivers for driving school. The insurance company said that it made them think of me as having 3 years experience. Sweet!

I actually heard of someone who calculated the cost of maintaining a car, gas, insurance, etc. and discovered that they'd be paying less money if they took a cab back and forth to work every day. But ah, the freedom can't be beat...

shalafi 06-24-2005 06:47 AM

I'm 30, never had a ticket, and no accidents in a long time (probably 10 years or so) and I pay around $80/month American. Thats on a 98 Chevy Silverado. I just traded it in Wednesday on a brand new (my very first NEW car) PT Cruiser so it will probably go either up or down.

dlish 06-24-2005 06:57 AM

ive been driving for 11 years. i red light ticket in that time and no accidents (where ive been at fault). i have a VW Golf Sport 2004 model. i just payed $1850 aussie dollars for my 1 year renewal.

I will be 37 in a week. I have a 95 camaro, no tickets or anything, and I pay 300 a year

laconic1 06-24-2005 08:04 AM

I'm 25, drive a '91 Chevy Corsica, and pay $760 a year for insurance, just collision, liability, and uninsured coverage, no comprehensive. My car is worth about $900 blue book so I'm getting raped. Supposedly I am getting a pretty healthy discount for being accident free for 9 years now. Being a single male sucks for insurance. If I was married it would be about 25 percent less.

Martian 06-24-2005 09:09 AM

21, male in Southern Ontario and I pay $230/month ($2760/year) with Pilot Insurance for my 1992 Beretta GT. I have a clean recod and have been driving for a few years now, but I also chose a 2 door car that I knew would be a bit higher than if I'd gone with a Cavalier or something.

Memnoch 06-24-2005 10:40 AM

Some of ya'll are getting screwed over.

20 years old, 7 tickets in the past 4 years (5 for "malfunctioning spedometer", 1 for speeding in excess (~25 mph over), 1 for running a stop sign). I currently drive a 2005 Nissan Altima 3.5 SE-R (though I've driven a '92 plymouth voyager, '89 volvo 740 and a '98 Malibu LS before this one).

I pay $160 a month for comprehensive, liability and medical.

Edit: I go through American Family. AmFam is awesome.

Cynthetiq 06-24-2005 10:46 AM

Full coverage 2001 Neon, 2 drivers no tickets 2 accidents (no fault state), live in NYC, $1700, 8,000 mile limit since it's not a daily driver.

i posted over there, but i'll post here too:

18yrs old, male, under parents insurance
1998 Honda Prelude, 5spd, clean record - $278/mo

19yrs old, parents insurance, 2 speeding tickets (21over, 9+ over) - $425/mo :(

Brand new car with no collision coverage? I guess that would save you some money but I have to question the wisdom.

We pay about $1600 a year for our 2 cars - '98 MB SLK230 and '95 Acura NSX, full coverage on both. I'll just say we're both old enough that it doesn't matter how old we are for insurance purposes. My wife has 1 speeding ticket and I'm clean.

A LOT of what you pay for insurance is based on where you live.

Memnoch 06-24-2005 02:16 PM

Bodypaint - Forgot to list collision. Durrr. You can't finance a new vehicle without it.

TheClarkster 06-26-2005 08:59 PM

19 year old in So. Cal.
I drive a 1970 VW Squareback and I pay $320 a year.
Also a 1967 Cougar that is about $700 a year i think.

actinic 06-27-2005 04:59 AM

I'm a 35 y/o single male (tho common law, the insurance company says I'm single), liscenced since 16, bought first car 2 years ago and I'm paying $4000CDN/year on a 2003 Mazda Tribute here in d/t Toronto. The reason I'm getting raped is b/c I have no "insurable" history.

bendsley 06-27-2005 05:36 AM

I am 24, three speeding tickets since I was 16 and drive a 2002 BMW 525i and a 1999 Ford Explorer Sport. Both have full coverage. They are both paid off, but I just prefer knowing that if something were to happen, myself and the other car should be taken care of. The Explorer is about $167/month and the Bimmer is about $250, both in $US currency.

Not too bad on the whole though. The 525i is about to be replaced with a new toy. Either looking at an Audi A6 or the BMW 535xi, both 2006 models. Either way, my insurance will probably go up a little. Maybe not since I have a BMW already.

Bah, either way, insurance is way too high as it is. These companies make a killing.

merkerguitars 06-27-2005 06:31 AM

Note: please post what engine you have in the car too....that does affect what your insurances is...............

24 y/o single male, No speeding tickets, 1 ticket for failing to stop at a yellow light (the dipshits), I pay $65/month for liability coverage in a city where insurance is high do to auto theft stats.

Anyway, I'm 24, no tickets but one shared-fault accident, own a '03 Ford Crown Victoria P71 (Police model) with the 302hp 4.6L V8. I pay about $320 a month.

Edit: Forgot to mention two things: 1) I live in PA, home of weird liquor laws and high insurance premiums and 2) I have full collision, uninsured driver, and medical coverage to $500,000.

braisler 06-27-2005 10:22 AM

Holy crap! I guess we just have killer insurance rates or something. We have a '95 Subaru wagon that we paid $180 every six months for, so around $30/month. We just added a 2000 BMW Z3 2.3 and qualified for a multiple car discount. Now we pay $160 for the Subaru and another $180 for the BMW, I think. Full coverage on both comp/coll./liability. Oh, and check your deductible too. If you have a $250 deductible, you are getting taken to the cleaners. Anything under $500, you aren't going to want to make a claim anyway. Every claim you make is either going to A) drive up your insurance rates for more than the claim or B) cause the insurance company to refuse you coverage. Ask your agent for a quote on your current insurance with a $500 deductible. I think it should help. Also consider how much coverage you really need. Do you need to have 250K/500K coverage? Or will 100K/300K or 50K/150K be enough?

I will say that I am married, 31 y/o, since that certainly factors into it. If I was paying $2000+/year for insurance I would have to seriously consider not owning a car. That is just crap!

American insurance is so steep. I have a 97 Mustang GT. When I lived in Manhattan it was costing me about $200 a month. Back in the UK I'm paying £350 for a YEAR for the exact same car.

splck 06-27-2005 07:52 PM

91 honda civic SI $700 a year
03 F-350, loaded diesel, $1800 a year Canadian.

Comparing insurance prices is like comparing apples and oranges. The price depends on how much coverage, no fault, comprehensive, driving record, urban or rural, and age of the driver to name a few.
In Canada everyone has health care provided no matter if you want it or not, so that's not an issue with insuring vehicles.

your deciding factor is your postal code believe it or not
in the Greater Toronto Area, if your postal code starts with M like I do, then you are fucked.

I used to live in Waterloo, ON, was paying $60cad/m for an Acura TSX, moved to Toronto, rates shot up to 90, 103, 113, then this year 130, and my records all clean, and I am 34. this is nuts man.

25 y/o single male. I drive a, hmm I guess you guys would call it a trucklet, 2003 Ford Bantam 1.6 I pay R6000 approx annually which is about $880.

Um, first of all, I would be ecstatic at insurance that's only ~$600 a year, per car.

Anyway, $50-150K coverage? With today's medical costs? One minor accident, with you and a passenger being required to stay in the hospital overnight and have CAT scans will run you $100K, easy. A bad accident can easily run you close to $500K. Having low coverage is just asking for trouble down the road.

Second is the added un-insured driver insurance (that most people don't have). It's only a few extra bucks a month, and covers you if you are in an accident with a driver with no insurance. Trust me, it makes a big difference. I grew up with a mother that did personal injury law...you wouldn't believe how often these types of accidents occur.

I would believe. My brother was hit on a bicycle when he was 19 by an uninsured motorist. He is ok now, but lost most of his left kneecap after it was shattered in 13 pieces by the accident. And, yes, I agree that uninsured motorist coverage is good to have and worth a few extra a month. We just moved to Kentucky and uninsured is kind of a way of life for some of the people living here.

With my other point, I was just suggesting that lower coverage might be a better solution for some people faced with the choice of having no coverage at all because they can't afford it and having overly heavy coverage. As far as medical costs are concerned, that is what my medical insurance is for. The car insurance coverage that I have is to cover the medical costs of others that might be injured in an accident. If we are talking about a hypothetical 20 year old male in college, having 250K/500K coverage is overkill in my opinion. The kids total net worth is maybe $20K, usually less. The insurance is there to really protect you from being sued and losing your shirt. If you don't have a shirt to protect, why beef up your coverage just so you can pay higher premiums.

I won't get into how much of a scam car insurance is in the first place.

Sorry for getting the tread a little off-topic. :)

COOL! We have 2 Pt's. New Jersey has the highest insurance rates in the US but we have a not-for-profit company covering us, so the two cars, fully covered run us $1200 a year-close to half the normal rates here. Pluse, we get a dividend check every year based on claims filed.
I think you will find your rates go down since the safety features on the PT would be more current and much better that the truck.

We have a 2003 Honda Civic, a 2003 Honda CRV, a 2004 Kawasaki VN800, and a 1998 Honda Valkyrie. We are ticket free for the last 5 years; but had a huge (6 figure) claim in 1996. We pay $1500/year for full coverage on 4 vehicles, though our daughters are specifically excluded.

hopes it's not too off topic, but in michigan, you pay into [automatically a part of your insurance, IIRC] in a state fund that you covers victims against uninsured drivers. Not sure if any other states do it.

1984 buick skylark - standard engine; 18 y.o. male, no tickets/violations [i've gotten 3 warnings, i don't think it makes a diff. though]; with state farm insurance; have a good student discount [if you have a >3.0 GPA]
I have liability/comprehensive [$100 deductible], prop. damage liability, and uninsured coverage, and it costs me $525 every six months, if I remember correctly. I'm under my parents' insurance, who have been under state farm for the past ~30 years, and have only gotten into 2 accidents in the past 15 years or so - that probably helps my rate

Also, your residence, your parents' driving record [if you're under their name] and the amount of your deductible can influence your rate as well. After reading some other's posted rates here, I'm surprisingly happy with my deal.

cya,
will.
