2002 Honda Accord: How prevalent are transmission problems?

I've been doing some reading on the 2002 Honda Accords and came across the following on the HowStuffWorks website:

Automatic transmission (1999, 2000, 2001, 2002): On V6 models, transmissions may fail due to lack of thread-locking compound on nut for low clutch. Honda extended the warranty on affected vehicles to seven years or 100,000 miles.

Does anyone know how prevalent this is? I found a well maintained 2002 Honda Accord EX V6, single owner, with 116,000 miles at my local dealer, and after test driving it was pleased to the point that I decided to buy it. The AutoCheck report is totally clean and received a score of 88 (with similar cars receiving a 76-87 score).

Now, as I wait to pick up the car in a few days, I am a bit concerned that I could be getting a problem car. Seeing that the car is over 100,000 miles, it's not likely to be covered by the extended warranty, either.

I'd appreciate any and all thoughts or comments on this if anyone has any, even if they aren't necessarily reassuring.

Don't Honda's and Toyota's Go forever? That is what I seem to hear all the time. Yes, your Honda is a problem child. There is more to it than just thread locker though, the cars in question have a problem with the main shaft and to fix it it is upwards of $2000.00. Oh yea, don't forget the timing belt and water pump, App. $800.00.... Oh ya, that's normal maintenance..... Doesn't count....Point I'm trying to make is, please quit badmouthing American cars, I've been driving them since the 60's and still am.... considerably less problems and $$$ than most foreign cars, and yes, I've had both... Google Toyota Engine Sludge if your looking... Any car can have problems, mechanical stuff does...Give me A GM, Ford or Dodge with a timing chain any day.....

P.S. Google Honda Acccord Transmission Problems...Or Call around a few Transmission Shops, and Honda Dealers, and just say... " I have a 2002 Honda Accord and It is Shifting funny"...See what they say...

Wait what? I think you jumped down the throat of someone who was asking a really polite, honest question. Myself, I don't know whether it's prevalent or not, but I didn't see any bashing of American cars or anything to justify the smarmy response.

Interesting post. I didn't mention American cars once in my post, nor did I mention having any problems with my Honda. I asked a general question regarding a concern I had about the 2002 Honda Accord transmissions.

In regards to your recommendations to call around and do Google searches, I did. I called two transmission shops and the Honda service department. I also made a post here, as I figured it would be yet another means towards gathering opinions and experiences.

To follow-up my original post, and likely close it, I asked the dealer today about the issue and he said there were concerns, but the specific problem referenced would have presented itself by now if it were to be present in the car I was buying. That was my suspicion all along and it was re-assuring to hear it from someone else that already had my money and was no longer obligated to tell me what I wanted to hear as a means for selling a car. The car drives well and I have no complaints or regrets.

If you'd like to debate the issue of American cars versus imports, that's all well and good, but I'm not remotely interested in taking part. I buy the cars I like and I expect others to do the same. This thread was created strictly as a means for gathering information in regards to a concern I had, and given the lack of quality, and number of, responses, I gather it's a moot point in this environment; and that's fine. That's exactly why I pursued multiple sources in the first place.

Wow, if American cars were so good, would people who like them and back them up be so, how do you say touchy on the subject? Especially considering the OP said nothing about American cars being shitty, mind you I will, I hate the bastards, pieces of shit, there now your rant can at least be directed at someone other than the OP who just asked a reasonable question about a car he was purchasing.

Jesus man, read a post before responding, or at least comprehend the question the OP is asking.

Yet according to your profile you were born in 1960, so I guess you were driving them at what 10?
