What Fits in a Fit?

In the Fuel Economy vs. Comfort thread, Pony Potato commented the following:

Now, I don't speak for the Versa...in fact, I rather do not like them, and hence purchased a 2007 Honda Fit Sport instead, for which this is entirely untrue. The Fit is one of the most efficient transportation vehicles for its size and gas usage I've ever seen. However, saying is not showing, so, here we go!

Here it is configured comfortably for 4 passengers. With the back seats up, you have about 26 deep x 36 x 36 cargo cube to fill.

This can be filled quite effectively, and easily hold a normal human's weekend roadtrip's worth of stuff, or four backpacking backpacks standing up next to eachother:

In this case, it held:
  • Two Large Sleeping Bags
  • Two small flexible coolers
  • One large low rubbermaid
  • Two large storage rubbermaids
  • One duffle bag full of towels
  • One kitty transport vessel

Now, if it's just a roadtrip for two, which many are, then it's a different story all together. We can fold down the rear seats (not remove them), and with the front seats in a comfortable sustainable position, we have over a five foot deep cargo area. For comparison, this is the same size as a short bed Tacoma pickup truck.

This will hold, um, a rather lot of things. Actually, more things than I had in rubbermaids in my garage, so I had to start improvising (note the large cardboard box and the milk crates of electronic stuff)

Yes, everything fit with the doors closed...that picture was boring due to tinted windows so I didn't upload it.

Still have plenty of leg room. If my wife wasn't taking no part in this nonsense ("oh my gosh, is someone WRONG on the internet again?" I believe was her comment) I'd have a picture of my 6'2" 250lbs self sitting comfortably in the driver's seat.

A total inventory:
  • Three Large Sleeping Bags
  • Two small flexible coolers
  • Four large low rubbermaids
  • SIX large storage rubbermaids
  • Two milk crates
  • One large cardboard box
  • One duffle bag full of towels
  • One full daypack
  • One internal frame backpacking pack partly full of laundry
  • One kitty transport vessel

I'd say this is a rather bit more than 'maybe enough space for a cooler,' and if you need more than that for a weekend camping trip, why, I pity you.

If you have another person you want to bring along, you can easily sacrifice, say, two of the large tubs and fold up one of the back seats and not lose much storage--they are 60/40 split, so he will still be comfortable, and you can carry the above minus two of the large rubbermaids.

This doesn't address the 'long' option for carying, where the passenger can sit behind the driver and the front passenger seat flips back, allowing you to fit up to a 9'6" item (like say, oh, a pair of these kayaks) in the passenger side.

I did this as an exercise for my self as well, as I'd never tried to max out what I could Fit in the Fit. This load is in addition to a dining room table and four chairs (with a passenger), two large rolled area rugs (11 x 14 and 10 x 10, I believe, again with passenger), an assembled desk and chair, and many many other things on a daily basis. Did I mention it gets 35mpg, I have 40,000 trouble-free miles on it, it is consistently ranked 'best value' and has a couple 'car of the year's under its belt as well?

What can I say other than THE FIT IS GO!

Just because mine isn't doesn't mean yours can't be...it's not like they're not offered, I just don't trust my wife not to glaze the clutch!

This is awesome! If I weren't in the midst of studying for finals I would reply with what fits in my MINI.

Wow, twistedmosaic! That is amazing! It's definitely more than enough room for what my SO and I would need.

Thanks for taking the time to make this thread and showing us just what fits in a Fit.

That's pretty impressive and it shows how useful a hatchback is. I battle with car space a lot given my cars. I packed 7 people in my Fiat one time when it used to have a back seat (briefly haha). The most I've gotten in the Miata was enough camping gear, food, and beer for 2 people for a long weekend. Luckily my friend was meeting me there because most of it took the front seat.

It still will not work for me without seats down, something I do not enjoy. I require space for saddles, and I cannot (and will not) bend them so they'll fit in a Fit without being squished.

Hence, I prefer the Matrix/Vibe cargo area:

The cargo area is also plastic-coated, with tie-downs. VERY useful when you are like me and sometimes have to carry heavy or sharp-cornered items that you don't want scraping up the inside of your car. With the seats folded down, the Matrix/Vibe becomes like a truck with a cap - the "bed" is quite large, enough for me to move most of my furniture on my own. The width of the tailgate on the Fit is also smaller than that on the Matrix/Vibe, very limiting when loading it up. There are many boxes Crompsin and I have moved from Ikea that we never would have been able to get in the Fit because of the width of its opening.

Yes, the Matrix/Vibe is a larger car. I know that, and I really like the fact that I sit up higher than most cars, almost on par with a minivan. It makes visibility much better. Crompsin drove a Versa to Columbus once (a rental) and hated it.. yet he traded in his truck for a Vibe.

twistedmosaic, the Fit works for you. That's good for you. But some of the items I regularly move will NOT fit in a Fit, so I don't have one. My Matrix gets similar gas mileage, has more power, and more space.. and personally I think it's much nicer looking. So that's why I own one.

Do you ever have passengers in the rear seat of your car?

From autotrader "compare cars" feature (2004 Matrix vs. 2007 Honda Fit):

Advantages of Matrix Std4dr Wgn Manual (Natl) compared to Fit 5dr HB MT

* 21 more horsepower (130 vs 109).
* 20 more ft/lbs of torque (125 vs 105).
* Performance tires standard, versus not available.
* Daytime Running lights standard, versus not available.
* 26.4 more miles cruising range in the city (382.8 vs 356.4).
* 64.8 more miles cruising range on the highway (475.2 vs 410.4).
* 2.4 gallons larger gas tank (13.2 vs 10.8).
* 5.9 inches greater wheel base (102.4 vs 96.5).
* 13.9 inches longer (171.3 vs 157.4 which may be an advantage).
* 3.7 inches wider (69.9 vs 66.2 which may be an advantage).
* 2.3 inches greater front tread width (59.6 vs 57.3).
* 2.6 inches greater rear legroom (36.3 vs 33.7).
* 6.1 more cubic ft. of passenger space (96.2 vs 90.1).

Unfortunately autotrader doesn't take cargo volume or dimensions into account, so I can't argue that at the moment.. but those are all valid reasons for me to choose the Matrix over the Fit.

p.s. the Versa IS tiny, though!

A perfectly reasonable reason to get a larger vehicle then! The purpose of this thread wasn't EVERYONE NEEDS A FIT IT WORKS FOR EVERYONE It was mainly to show onesnowyowl and anyone else curious exactly how much stuff a Fit could Fit, so they could decide if they needed to buy bigger. I didn't want your cooler comment to give them the wrong impression...now, if you had said 'my saddles won't fit' that would be a different story, as not everyone moves saddles all the time!

My wife rides almost exclusively in the back seat behind me, as our daughter's carseat is in the back on the passenger side.

And I'm sure there are plenty more valid reasons as well!

Advantages of a Honda Fit for me: $2000 cheaper in the configuration I wanted, (new, remote keyless entry, cruise control, auto tranny), slightly better gas mileage, I liked how it drove and looked better (I drove both!), and I like Honda better than Toyota. Doesn't mean there's anything wrong with a Matrix, that's why they make different cars!

Yeah it is. At least it's better than the Yaris though....silly little baby corolla, bleh!

Know what also fits in a Fit?

Honda K20 engines

That's more like it.

Thanks, tm, this gives me renewed respect for the Fit.

I'm starting to also see some nicely moded Fits. Pimp my Fit?

That's very impressive. I've always loved hatchbacks for being able to carry so much.

Still, the Fit looks like someone overinflated a Civic. Which is a bit odd.

I'm still waiting for the Polo, Volkswagen.

This is a great demonstration of how much can be packed into a small hatchback. I have a a WRX wagon and while doing my yearly moves it has come in immensely handy. Most people assume that if they need space for a twice yearly camping trip or for day hiking they need large suv's when in reality a hatchback will do the job at a much cheaper price.

I'd like to mod one and call it "Mental Fit". To the OP, I really hate car commercials, and quoting one makes my brain hurt. If a Toyota guy posts here with a clip of someone singing any Toyota commercial I might spontaneously combust. And you lose points for the pink cat carrier.

the fit has what is known as 'dirty mode' where the seats turn into lounges. So yes. It is possible, almost by design.

I dunno...telling your kids they were conceived in the back of a Fit doesn't sound as cool as telling them they were conceived in the back of a Beetle.
